I haven't posted my work here before, so this is as much of a test for me posting as it is a gallery log (if it works).

After some relative success with a Grot Tank project, I decided to tackle a couple of Supa Kannons. Attached should be the first shots.

That worked... so moving along, here is the second status update. I should note that some of these are marked up with my chicken scratch from MS Paint. The reason is I have collaborated a bit with some friends in my local gaming during the creation process to mainly communicate what has changed between the last update, but also to serve as a reference point during email discussions. I included some 'what if' photos as it relates to battle wagon and half track models here too.... Anyway, enough babble...

Next is the third update. This was about 4 or 5 nights into the process. I tend to work on these about 3-4 hours per evening after dealing with husband / Dad duties.

It may be worth noting that I am working off of several images I downloaded from here, bella, warseer, etc... all found from Google Images. I scaled everything from my IA8 technical photos. Thus, some trial and error reverse engineering the pieces was invovled as I have not seen the actual supa kannon in person. Finally, I'm not trying to 100% mirror or reproduce the FW model, i'm trying to create the base shell and conceptually reproduce a meaningful / recognizable version of the weapon, then apply my own creative / artistic license when/where I feel so inclined. Heh... so with that... pics.

Half track conversion. FW half track kit, FW engine from the ork boss on bike, battle wagon reinforced ram for fenders, and some reworking of the truck bits for the crew area along with a loota and 'rocket' conversion. Call it a gun truck, Big Track or just a neat truck... lol, it's versital.

This update is after 8 evenings of work. I went back and forth about whether I wanted a crew platform. The FW model has one, and I'm a big fan of making a model at least appear like it can work. So, I landed on giving it a try. However, I wanted the Kannon to remain portable. I may want to move it to a Big TraK for example. So, my challeng is / was to come up with a platform that did not 'hang' on the Battlewagon bed walls. I needed the crew platform to mount to the gun mount or the gun carrige. If I mounted to the carrige, then as the gun traversed left and right, the crew platform would move and I didn't like that for several reasons. The "L" bracket idea came from one of my gaming group. Though we didn't have the logistics worked out, I went with it and decided to try expanding on that idea. I went with an under side mount in concept and figured I could 'fill it out' with more orky bits once I got the height and structural shell out of the way. This is what I came up with last night (6/1/2010)...

Having seen these in person last Saturday, I can attest that they look even better than the images show.

Rob, it looks like you've found a nice answer to your "loading platform" issue. I like what you did with it. I'm presuming you checked the platform measurements to coincide with your Trukks, too?

Suggestion: If you haven't done so already, widen the semi-circle around the exhaust. It looks a bit small in the "top down" shot. Wouldn't want to accidentally put pressure on it & have it rub the paint on the exhaust. KWIM?

Also, what kind of further supports do you have in mind?

I am *SO* not looking forward to getting hammered by these things.

Eric

Eric,

Thanks for the continued feedback.

First, that's not exaust (note to self to do something about that!) Those are just cross-members and structure parts. When finished, those will be cut down and removed likely... or blended into the model's construct.

As far as fitting into a trukk (half track) the tail-gate on the one pictured above gets into the way... so may have to do something there in the future to get the half-track to be able to mount a gun of this 'calibur' in the future. I've decided to keep my focus on getting the Kannon to work in the Battlewagon and eventual Big Trakk models. (as far as fitting in a standard GW trukk, yeah it fits - heh, and looks menacing...)

For further supports, I'm aiming for structural integrity in look / feel. I may place a platform or walking plate on top of the large horizontal "L" brakets, will model a piece and test fit... I would like to do something about the 'wing' edges of the crew platform as right now, there is no 'look' of support on those pieces. However, I don't want to sacrifice the abilty for the cannon to traverse left / right so will have to play around with some test fit pieces tonight.

I still need to do something orky with the scope (and I have some ideas) along with adding some ork 'worky gubbinz' to the sides of the cannon carrige.

I was referring to the exhaust stack coming out of the back of the Battlewagon (part of the Battlewagon) and the way you've cut a semi-circle on the platform you're building, so as not to block it. I think the semi-circle needs to be a bit bigger circumference. KWIM?

I believe someone had a really cool idea for you.
Something about converting a grot to lay on the barrel and look down the scope.

Semi circle widened a bit on both guns, thanks for suggestion.

Grot modelling on cannon looking out scope is not going to happen... sorry (he was trying to convince me of this last weekend in person)...

I think I'm going to 'bend' the piping down below the cannon for the orky-periscope type of look. Don't know for sure though, will have to mock up some parts and see if I like it. Hmm...

For now, I have to add 'junk' aka scrap metal / parts to the top of the crew loading plank and strenghten the integrity of the crew walk way supports.

A very realistic weapon (in an orky way). It somewhat resembles a giant flak cannon or some sort of oversized AA gun. I bet it can erase Lans Speeders from the sky easily, hehe...

By the way, very nice paintjob on your trukk, it looks really vibrant.

Thank you for the continued comments. Glad to hear it's starting to look the part.

After last night (~4 hours), I started working on the crew platform(s) a bit. There's a lower and upper platform. I'm done with the lower (outside of rivots). The upper platforms need work on the under side. one of the two upper platforms is pretty covered with scrap / junk. Once i get rivots on it, I think I'll be happy with it... lol, maybe... I'm trying to decide how much scrap I want on the crew platform areas. If you have ideas, please LMK your thoughts... critism welcomed... right then,

Quick update - evening 10. Another 4.5 hours tonight. I think crew platforms above and below are ready for rivots... though the U shaped fasteners may need a bit more work, but getting close. Several bits of scrap metal parts added with a bit of structural improvements. I think I figured out the periscope bit... the orky version with many more bends, heh, I kinda like the way that looks. Deciding whether I want to add some sort of support for that periscope armature or not.

I'll add more pics tomorrow. Someone asked for the half track photos, so took some of those tonight as well. In effort of full disclosure, the half track conversion is not my own work. I picked it up off of a guy. I plan to modify it a bit more, but so far all I can claim is the tiny bit of plasticard work on the rear end... Anyway, didn't want to take credit for something that wasn't my own work

More pics to come on Friday (tired now), so this is all I got for the moment.

Cheers in advance for comments / critiques,

Tac

Odd how having strangers look at your work can somehow motivate you. I really appreciate the continued feedback. Thank you all for taking the time to look and post.

Eric, its true that the half track looks even better in person, but that can probably be said about any of my photos... I am using a cell phone to take the photos.

off hand comment.... I've noticed my thumbs are starting to show some wear after this project. Apparently all of the fiddling on plastic means the hobby knife makes minor cuts in my fingers here and there... heh... I will spare you all from taking a photo of those! Must think about protecting those a bit... moving on....

I'm liking the way the Supa Kannons are shaping up for sure. I'm anxious to start putting the riots on because those add so much to complete the look IMO.... maybe I will forgo further additions for the time being and start some rivot work tonight... hmm... I really want to come up with something on the non-periscope side of the gun carrige, and I need to make a decision about whether I want any supports for the periscope bit too... heh, so many ideas. Guess I'll see where inspiration takes me tonight.

Final thought, though not painted yet, I will be field testing these bad boys this weekend, tomorrow on fact. I am eager to see them in action on the field. Hoped to have paint on them by now but.. oh well, they look the part enough to get thru a battle or two with friends.

Something about 60" range S9, AP3, ordinance 1, 5" blast just says "hey doin pal." ...and two of them just makes me giggle a bit... heh. "Good times."

Well, 'nuff of my ramblin.'

Rivets it is.

I took a couple shots of the rivet prep... and the start of rivet application to one of the cannons. That should give you a feel for what it will look like once fully applied to the model all over the place.

If interested, I took two different sized styrene rods (solid cylinder) and cut them up with an xacto blade. These are meant to be two different sized rivet heads.

Definitely on the tedious side of things, but the finished product is all about the details. Orks seem to go crazy with the industrial fasteners, and personally I like the look once painted.

Observant chaps will notice one TUBE (hollow cylinder) has been cut down into small slices. I think of those as washers for a more complext fastener... I took the larger of the two RODS (solid cilynder) and cut some longer lengths than what I use for rivets. These will be placed inside of the TUBE (washers) and stick out a enough to resemble a bolt of sorts.. there is one assembled there in the photo if it shows up. I also already have one of these pictured on one of the upper crew platform sections in an earlier photo for anyone looking for a seek-n-find challenge. Heh...

Right here's the photos, back to rivet'ing...

End of day 11, and rivets are applied. I will go back next and scuff them up a bit each... but the plastic cement needs to set up well before I do that so I don't pop them off in the process.

I've been looking at Forgeworld's grot crew lot. I broke down and picked them up, so may end up using a couple of those for the Kannons. I'm more of a machinery / mechanical conversion mentality... I'll tweak an arm, reposition a model and GS in where needed but I don't enjoy that as much, so picking up the models will be some good source material. Speaking of source material... while I'm off topic, I decided to order the grot tanks as well. I have one done of my own, but I think I can make a slew more by using some of their parts and some scratch build bits. Also grabbed a Big Trak just because the model looks very nice and ... when spending money, what's one more tank?? Sounds like another project blog in itself... anyway, I digress.

Tomorrow I game, but Sunday I'll be at these kannons again... with any luck, I'll have the finishing touches on them sunday and maybe even some primer and first paint coat. So, here's the state they will be in for tomorrow's gaming. Also, there is a WIP BW pictured here. It is far done obviously and may need to modify the gate on that some more to make sure both cannons fit nice, but anyway - hope you find something useful in these shots.

Cheers,
