Just finished Treason's Harbour (book 9 of the Aubrey/Maturin books) by O'Brien, and started Pale Horseman, by Bernard Cornwell. Some kickass historical fiction in both cases.

I just finished Space Wolf. A buddy of mine let me borrow it since it's what got him into the whole 40k universe. Right now though I'd like to start reading The Golden Compass.

I just lost the game...

Team of Rivals - By Doris Kearns Goodwin

It is about the political life and presidential cabinet of Abraham Lincoln.

The greatest president ever selected his rivals to the prez nomination to be his cabinet after he was elected for the simple reason that he wanted the strongest cabinet possible to lead the country in her darkest days. It's quite fascinating, and halfway through, the Civil War has just had it's opening battles.

Also, I recently read America Afire about the election of 1800 (the first political party "contested" election in the US's history), and it fascinated me to see the language used in 1800 was nearly identical to 2004. The hyberbole and rhetoric is largely unchanged.

No, malf, I just started a while back. After I finish this one, I am going to try 1776 by David McCullough, and then find something well respected and readable on Ben Franklin. Reading about Taft after Lincoln would just be depressing But I do plan on trying to get through some of the biggies - The Roosevelts, more Lincoln (because there is never enough on Lincoln), and Jefferson. I'll keep you posted though.

I do highly recommend America Afire. Like, BIG TIME, if you are a fan of American history.

EDIT: Before you think I'm "smart", I recently read Fulgrim

Take that as you will. In my older age, I find books about more meaningful things...more meaningful, I suppose. I'll still read Legion by Abnett

I'm currently re-reading "Soon I will be invincible". Half the book is from the point of view of the Super Villain, Dr Impossible. He suffers from Malign Hypercognition Disorder (ie Evil Genius).

This sounded interesting to me, but I never picked it up. I heard about it on the Daily Show when our former UN Ambassador John Bolton said Lincoln never did that. So Jon Stewart called her the next day to get a rebuttal.

Right now I'm re-reading Suldren's Garden, the first Lyonesse book by Jack Vance. It's so darn good that sometimes I'm really not sure whether the Lord of the Rings is my favorite fantasy novel or not.

If by "reading" you mean "carrying around inside my backpack for two months feeling guilty about it" then it's:
Agro-Meterological Modelling, Climate, Weather and Irish Agriculture.
Sounds exciting, doesn't it? I'm also reading a bunch of papers from the 50s and 60s about freshwater molluscs.

Ciaphas Cane novels, which are actually much more enjoyable than the dodgy cover art would have lead me to believe.

Against my better judgement: The Dragon Reborn

The narrator (audio book) does a good job of keeping
the voices different without being annoying. The voice is
neither monotonous or melodramatic.

And because it's an audio book, I give up on the pacing
and just let it go. I'm not concerned with what will happen
next (series never ends) and only interested in what's
happening now.

Audio books, believe it or not, have done wonders for my
reading impatience.

Before that it was Lian Hearn's Prequel to Across the
Nightingale Floor, which tells the story of Lord Shigeru
and how he got to the position he was in at the beginning
of Otori book 1. Here, I did become impatient, but I was
still satisfied with the book overall.

Rereading Daemon World.

Ben Counter's prose can be laughably bad at times, but I remember the book being quite inspiring for all the demonic stuff and few chaos marines in there. The book got me to build my demonbomb the first time, hoping to get a nice injection of interest in redoing it for C: Demons too

Damn me for being a GW Fanboy, but I'm reading "Descent of Angels" and after that, I'm finishing "False Gods" so I can move on to "Galaxy in Flames" and "Flight of the Einstein".

On a side note, I'm only about 100 pages into "Descent of Angels" and I'm not crazy in how they're introducing everything so fast. The "Ravenwing" is a group of elite knights within the order? Lord Cypher is a title and not a person?

Seems to me they're trying (a bit too hard IMHO) to give the background to everything.

I'm reading Taxation of Business Enterprises by Robert Peroni. It's a very post modern story: casting a wide variety of business owners as the protaganists locked in conflict with the IRS. Much of the narrative is literally in the form of court opinions, with oft lengthy asides about the legal issues involved, much like the factual tangents of Victor Hugo. In an interesting twist, none of the protaganists never meet, and much like the movie Slacker, few of the characters are featured for long, and hardly any return for more than one or two scenes.

Probably the most interesting facet of the book is the constant references to "The code," it's meaning, it's interpretation, and it's execution. While the code isn't really written out in Taxation, this is a popular enough novel that a third party actually wrote out the entire code. I've been skimming the Code, and it's remarkably complex, but not exactly clearly written (which is of course a recurring theme of conflict within Taxation itself!"

The book has some flaws however. There isn't much character development, except for ironically the neutral arbitrator of the the Tax Court, a character whose job is to pass judgement upon the heros. Over the sixty years of the narrative, which of course appear out of order, the Tax Court is revealed to be remarkably complex. While most authors lean on cliches and stereotypes for judges, Peroni exposed the thinking and actions of the Tax Court in all it's glory.

Just read Legion (in two days, would've been less if I could read at work...)

Friggin' AWESOME book.

I don't put it above Flight of the Eisenstein, and I'm not sure if it's better than the first trilogy, but it's definitely up there. It's better than Fulgrim and leagues above Descent of Angels. I definitely like that it's from the perspective of the Imperial Army as opposed to the Alpha Legion.

The twists are just great.

Now on to finish the Van Carstein trilogy, to inspire my creative hand!
