no wonder you get so many noobs and weak lists at the big tournaments. No one ever really competes in tournaments according to this. I attend a tournament once a month and thats on average for me.

I love tournaments. I try to attend as many as I can. Prizes are great!

I'm actually running my 1st tourney next month, The Foostsloggers Ball! It's a 2,000 point tourney where transports are completely disallowed.

Since there a no big tourneys I can reach without a car its a zero. But I would have to relearn a lot since I´m not very familar with the 5th edition anyways.
My FLGS made a big one every year (64 people in40k and 64 people in Fantasy at the best times) - But thanks to GW price policy my FLGS doesn´t exist any more.

I did not know if you meant Tournaments in general or major tournies. I got 4th in the semi's @ Ard Boyz this year and plan to attend the next Con that's in the East with a 40k tournament. However we have a 40k tournament every month at the FLGS so over 9 a year counting those.

EDIT: I noticed when reading over the responses people pointing out that the tournament gamers are the clear minority. Going just by the vote count you are clearly right. I think you should take into account the people saying that they would play in them, but have none held in their area or they cannot make the trip to the bigger ones. I think if these peoples FLGS held tournaments regularly the numbers would tip a noticable amount in favor of tournament gaming.

Current results indicate that this website has 245 shining beacons of humanity, and 210 thuggish Neanderthals. Good to see the sparkling fountains of pure light - that is to say casual gamers - are outnumbering those evil Satan-worshipping Tournament Gamers.

I don't come to any tournaments simply because they are taken too seriously. I believe in playing for fun instead of playing competitively.

I do about one a month on the average.

One a month for me. It would be more if the warden... er, my wife... was comfortable with it.

And I organize and run 2 large (50+ player) tourneys a year.

... I just realized I qualify as a hard core tourney player...

I'm looking to go to my first tournament next year at BolSCon and I am somewhat surprised at the poll's results however upon further thought it makes sense. This is a pretty niche and expensive hobby and tournaments usually require a bit more effort and money (paint, fees, time, travel, etc); not to mention it seems like over half the people here are casual (nothing wrong with that, I'm in the same camp). Also some areas simply lack a tournament infrastructure whether its lack of stores, effort, or lack of a strong enough community to actually have a tourney.

I go to any tournaments within a 60 mile radius... so normally about 1 a month (i'm up in the rochester area for school... lots of tournaments around here).

Never been to a "big" tournament though, other than DaBoyz GT '08, where there were like 35 gamers.

Play in alot of smallish, 10-20 man affairs, where I usually have a great time, and meet new gamers. I take my fluffy SM list (no named characters, no drop pods / outflanking, no repetition among choices) and usually do fairly well, placing around 2nd or 3rd, though through bad luck I haven't won yet...

so i'll say around 12 tournaments a year, because some months I have none, and some I have like 2.

9+ as many as i can.

Unfortunately almost all tournaments are on Saturday and I'm a religious Jew so 0.

i go to games day, and uncountable amounts in my local store (bedford)

I usually manage two Blood Bowl Tournaments each year. I keep wanting to try and get to a few more, but it does not seem to happen...

Next will be my first, but expecting to change that soon.

Meh, too much trouble. My army isn't even finished yet, so people would laugh at me if I used AoBR orks as chaos marines. Until my armies done, none.

Never been to a big tournament but would do the odd local or inshop things occasionally.

Lets see.. arrange a day off (from family friends, real life etc), travel, pay, pay extortionate rates for food (bring a packed lunch is wise!), be surrounded by people who's social skills equate to that of a sea slug and smell three times as worse while standing all day throwing dice to determine how quickly I loose to someone with a 'beastmen and lesiban stegadons* army' -which are of course 'counts as' space wolves using whatever is the cheeze'du'month at the time.

Oh yes and if my opponent is late so we get to turn 2... well tough its a draw coz you ran out of time. And if you win you get what? Props? Kudos? From who - WAAC-ers? Why the heck to I care?

Tournaments can and from what I've seen frequently do bring out the cheesiest, most pathetic elements of the wargaming community.
I prefer the more fluffy and generic 'Games days' (have 3 or 4 games, prizes for painting, best general best sportsman etc with a bit of a social and a laugh) which I think are much better. But of course these are 'soft' things... no 'RAWR we must be manly men' (with our toy soldiers) and act like arrogant >male chickens< whilst speaking in nasally high tones to the judge (if there is one..) to whom we know personally and so will agree with our ruling even if my opponent can (and I have) pointed it out clearly in black and white.

I hope that's offered some insight.

*I have no issues with lesbian stegadons.

Sad as it maybe between FLGS and Major Tournament that roll through, I most likely attend about 2 a month or more.

Tournaments ruin sportsmanship

I find this amusing, given the plethora of Tournament based/biased articles on Bols (or balls as I'm calling it of late)

I've never attended a tournament for the reasons many have given - they smell of cheese & are too serious for me - although I'd love to attend a doubles tournament with my brother.

For me a Tournament can be made fun/interesting is so many ways. I would like to see a 'vanilla' tournament (strictly no Unique Characters) or 'the footslogger' as Kungfuhustler mentioned or a tiered event where points increase from game to game - or a game of 'border patrol' followed by planet strike/cities of death/normal - that would be fun. I wouldn't mind paying either if it involved putting money towrads a celebratory feast, complete with beer

I guess you need the right frame-work around you though, a solid FLGS, gaming group or a creative GW manager. I think a 1,000pt League format would be good if you had enough people and could organise it (objective/vp difference instead of goal difference etc).
