drawing attention to its vast looming size and at 50 quid seems better value than most GW stuff.

It's cheaper, but you're still getting ripped off because it looks like a painted turd.

I seem to be on my own in thinking that it is a nice figure

Can't argue there. You are off from the crowd

but i get the impression that most of the negative comments come from people who don't know what Orcus is supposed to be.

If he's actually that crappy looking, I want my money back. And I've never even purchased a copy of D&D. But I'm just that offended by it.

As has been pointed out by others Orcus is way older than the bloodthirster (which came into existence because GW wanted a Balrog but didnt want to pay royalties on it).

Aaaaand... ... ... ...That stops it from still being a horrible sculpt?

Congratulations, that was the most idiotic use of gross anatomical hyperbole on this forum. I feel soiled at having even read your post.

Unlike the rest of you, I quite like that model. At least it doesn't look like a spastic with a giant head, like the GW Bloodthirster, nor is it burdened with a massively stupid name, like "Bloodthirster" (which pretty much sounds like a six-year-old's idea what a demon would be called).

I think most of the negative comments are coming more from the fact that it's not a great sculpt.

I'm not a huge fan of the Bloodthirster either, but the only real bonus there seems to be with this guy is that he's bigger. If you're after a bigger, better Bloodthirster, I would recommend trying to track down the Balrog from the Sabretooth Games LotR collectible game. I have one that I picked up on clearance a while back... Looks like it would probably be about a similar size to your Orcus, but is a lovely sculpt.

I just don't see how that model is better. They could of done a better job with the Bloodthirster, but my reaction to the Orcus is to fall on the ground laughing.

I looked up the mini after seeing this thread... I think the original picture in the thread is skewing opinion quite a bit as the figure looks much better almost everywhere else. Also it has a factory paint job which isn't helping things. I think to get a fair idea of what it looks like, we need a better paint job and a better picture.

Ah...the joys of pre-painted soft plastic minis. However, the model of Orcus is very representative of what I remember him supposing to look like back in AD&D. Ooops...dated myself.

The weapon /artifact is "the wand of Orcus" if you bother to find out his background you will find it is the skull of a god that he defeated.

That's Nagash. Orcus is either worse or on par with how good it is sculpted. And Nagash is the worst model sculpted by GW.

Cookie Monster would just die...no he can't.

Wait, so your saying because he's supposed to be ugly and an abomination, he should be a bad sculpt? LOL

Well, I'm... erect. I'd love to hear about what you put together.

"If you really want to know what it was like, to fight in the air in the great War, then go up to someone you have never met and who has never done you the slightest harm and pour a two-gallon tin of petrol over them. Then apply a match, and when they are nicely ablaze, push them from a fifteenth-floor window after first perhaps shooting them a few times in the back with a revolver. And be aware as you are doing these things that ten seconds later someone else will quite probably do them to you. This will exactly reproduce... the substance of First World War aerial combat and will cost your country nothing. It will also avoid the necessity of ten million other people to die in order for you to enjoy it."

A new day, a new time zone.

insaniak wrote:I think most of the negative comments are coming more from the fact that it's not a great sculpt.

I'd say the sculpt itself really isn't that bad, it's just that whoever took that picture seems to knows just enough about photographic technique to probably have a firm grip of which way the camera points. The flash is wiping out all the detail, and making all the wrong areas shiny. That's also a terrible angle to shoot it from. When I've seen it, it's not a bad job of presenting a massive, muscled demon lord.

jprp wrote:The weapon /artifact is "the wand of Orcus" if you bother to find out his background you will find it is the skull of a god that he defeated.

Nobody cares. You could probably introduce something more irrelevant into this thread, but it'd take effort. It doesn't matter how incredible the backstory to something on a model is, when the visual representation looks like crap. Nagash being a perfect example of this. Instead of one of the most fearsome walking evil in WH, his model looks like a big goober.

The original "bleeding rectum" post reads like sublime poetry compared to your mocking of the disabled by using the word "spastic" in this way. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind downright offensive language at all. I use it myself and am wholeheartedly against censorship on any grounds. What I'm pointing out here is your hypocrisy. Don't get all disgusted at somebody else's choice of language when your own leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm still firmly anti-minotaur. As far as I'm concerned, if your only solution to making a sculpt look good is to paint it dark (thereby concealing the sculpt), it's a bad sculpt.

But minotaurs are by all accounts quite powerful, especially in the new edition. So I expect to be a minority in the anti-mino camp. People will find a way to convince themselves the minis aren't as bad as they used to think they were.

Oh, and to make my post relevant to the thread, that Orcus is pants. I imagine when it speaks it laughs through an overbite going, "a-fuhfuhfuhfuhfuhfuhfuhfuhfuh" like some kind of in-bred .

Orcus, the demon, in DnD and AD&D, is awesome. That's why he gets artifacts of amazing, god like stats as a demon, and manages to ascend to godhood.

That sculpt is atrocious. I've not been a huge fan of the DnD minis, but at least they aren't all comically sculpted. I personally think that the blood thrister model from GW is a much better sculpt than the Orcus you posted.

You do realize that GW had a Lord of the Rings range far, far before the movies ever came out right?

During the 80s they were licensed to do one. They even did a Balrog for the "Encounter at Khazad-Dun" boxed set. So they didn't need to make a Bloodthirster if they just wanted to "make a Balrog"...

Sure, the Bloodthirster may have been inspired by the Balrog. But it wasn't just a flatout ripoff.

GW had the licenced range of lotr in the early eighties at the same time the early versions of WFB included a Balrog entry alongside a "Greater Demon" (the picture of which was basically an AD&D "pit fiend").

Then the licence ran out and there was a legal problem over the use of "Balrog" Followed by the emergence Of the 4 powers of chaos (as opposed to about 10 before) with their greater demons of which the Bloodthirster is most obviously taken from the Balrog just as the lord of change is an AD&D "Vrock" (the D&D licence had also gone by this point).
