Really practical looking Guard scheme and extremely well executed. For more variety in the Heavy Weapon Crews just use regular Guard legs and then use the crouching legs to have a couple of kneeling Guardsmen.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. These are looking great, the only thing I can think that ay improve these is some sort of brighter visor. Currently it seems to just kind of blend in a little too much.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I'm in agreement on the visors - I'd like them to stand out a little more. I'm up for suggestions on sensible colours that might stand out (not red, blue, etc...)

Really cool.

Maybe an orange for the visors?

Is orange a colour that visors would actually be? I may try gold.

This army is looking awesome. I think gold would be good for the visors, a glossy dark green could work too.

Into the final stretch for the infantry - just PCS and stormtroopers to go.

The sandbags are baneblade brown. Before and after the devlan wash it's a pretty good colour match to the khemri. I wasn't expecting that because they're pretty different in the pot but they dry really close. I'm going to try doing a vulture in baneblade and see how it looks. All may not be lost once the stash of khemri is exhausted....

Gold visor test-mini still to come...

All to often when people try to weather their guard and make them look 'realistic' it doesn't work well in 28mm.

You good sir, have pulled it off in spades! I love your tutorial on how you do the weathering on the sentinels and I'm keen to try the sponge thing myself.

Great looking army!

It's a great technique - probably the highest reward-to-effort ratio in miniature painting.

If you don't have it then I thoroughly recommend Forge World Imperial Armour Modelling Masterclass volume 1 (not so much vol2). Lots of very simple, very effective techniques.

There are some good two-tone brown schemes in IA1, although none of them are quite like mine.

Plus, I've been into brown and weathered for a while....

Manticores

I was SO pissed to discover that Forgeworld had discontinued their manticores that I bought a trio of Armageddon Medusa to cheer myself up.

And, of course, you can never have too many Chimera.

A bit of progress today.

Assembled three special weapon guys for the PCS (now that IA3-2nd Ed. has made the PCS non-rubbish now), two bodyguards for my CCS and nine regular guys to be sabre platform crew (plus the three surplus guys from the PCS).

Sabre platforms next!

Mortars was a game effectiveness decision as much as fluff. Missile teams would have been better (and no lascannons or autocannons available in a drop guard army). However, the thing with an army like that is that it starts with all of the good stuff in reserve. Missile teams would be taking the bulk of the enemy fire for 1-2 turns and would be wiped out easily.

Mortars are interesting because they do damage (not as much as other options but respectable since they tend to survive the battle) but being barrage weapons can be positioned such that it's a real chore to go get them for most armies. Do you put the effort in, given that they're "just" mortars?

Also, sabre platforms!

I don't get why FW feels they have to discontinue their models when a plastic kit comes out. Yeah I know, "There's a cheaper plastic version, everyone's gonna buy that one now!", but considering they cast most items to order anyway I don't see the harm in keeping it around regardless. I know the plastic baneblade is cheaper but I really liked the FW design a lot better (and I'm not alone I imagine), even if it is more of a pain in the ass to assemble than a plastic kit. Same with the manticore, personally I don't mind the plastic one too much but surely there are people out there who wouldn't mind having the option to buy the "original", especially if it looked better.

Tell me about it.

I understand with e.g. Valks - the plastic is almost identical (slightly less detail in some spots) but cheaper and much easier to assemble. No-one's going to buy the resin.

But the FW Manticore looks nothing like the plastic one. Not to mention that they're still making the Hydra so the only parts they'd need to make are the missiles and racks.

What's more annoying is that I now have 1x FW and 2x plastic. It's already starting to annoy me that they don't match and I haven't fielded them yet....
