Very nice man! My nephew is the same way with Toy Story, though it never occurred to me to create this much awesome out of that fact!

I definitely second the use of Pig Iron heads. I think they are actually a bit closer to scale than the scout heads. One thing I might suggest for the scout sgt is magnetizing a spot on his back for the combi-melta and having his left hand pointing. I think the gesture would match the look of the rest of the model, an the combi melta as is looks very off balance held out that way, a common issue with GW scale weapons. Having it slung over his shoulder or something similar would move that perceived weight more towards the model's center of balance.

Very cool. I love the texture you've put onto Rex. He looks actually like a very convincing Salamanders Ironclad Dreadnought.

I have seen plenty of marines painted/modelled to look like Buzz, but a whole army themed like Toy Story characters is interesting. I can't decide if you're making a statement that models are just toys and you should have fun with them, or if you're just stretching to see how far you can take theme armies before they break. Either way, if you're willing to play the army, and not be ashamed of your silly mans, more power to you.

I am a bit dubious as to why you chose Blood Angels as your couts-as codex(I see way too much of that, and it enfuriates my red-thirsting plastic mans), but I can buy that it does offer a lot of flexibility in units. Although, if you were takign Woody on a bike, taking a biker command squad with the vanilla codex for bikes as Troops would be pretty good. Admittedly though, the Ham-Airship from Toy Story 3 is pretty funny, if you can model a mash-up of a SRaven and perhaps a McDonalds toy. Although you could just make him Evil Doctor Porkshop as usual if that fails.

I'm sure you know that your current models don't make for a very competitive amry, but you're not going for that. I would at least reccomend getting a squad of bikes from Woody to hang out with, otherwise he will get killed too fast for a character of his stature. You're taking two dreads and a Raven, so you can build a mech. list if you'd like, with hybrid elements(bikes, some jumpers). They'll move fast enough together, especially if you upgrade Rex to a Libby and give him Wings.

Also, if you're playing Blood Angels, unless you're running an all-mech, no combat army, you need Sanguinary Priests. Bo Peep, perhaps? And you still have Etch to play with.

No statement, just thought it would be a fun project.
Using theme armies is not an issue for me:

Using blood angels was a simple choice - assault marines as troops, stormraven availability and it's the only space marine army I haven't used. And that's Mr. Evil Dr. Porkchop

I have some game play concerns regarding a lone libby-on-a-bike especially considering there really isn't anywhere to "hide". Hmmm. Maybe Woody could become a Sang Priest? Maybe Jesse as well?

you may have already thought this through or mentioned it but are you using the three eyed aliens at all, or the odd creations that are made across the street. those could make some interesting sang priest or a unit of bikes..

Hi all,

Just a bit of progress to report.

Wehrkind wrote:One thing I might suggest for the scout sgt is magnetizing a spot on his back for the combi-melta and having his left hand pointing. Having it slung over his shoulder

Thanks for the suggestion. Sargent Hartman looks much better (see pics below).

I also added a couple of parachuters.

At your and timff8 suggestion I looked up the rules for sang priests and my first thought was Little Green Men (LGMs). They are seen in groups of three and it would be fun to model / paint. I am leaning towards putting these in as Woody, Jessie, and Utility Belt Buzz (from TS2). Using characters with more screen time seem to match the importance of sang priests

Hi all,

I gave the Scout Veteran sarge a combi-plasma (no pics).

I have been giving the comments about using a Sanguinary Priest or two some strong consideration and thought. In order to add them some major changes will have to be made. I want to use tactical squads over assault squads as much as possible because Space Rangers tend to use their lasers and not close combat weapons. One issue, if the tactical squads are reduced below ten than no special wepaons or heavy weapons

Here is the latest installment of Space Rangers:

HQ - Buzz Lightyear (Captain Tycho) -

EL - Sanguinary Priest
Sheriff Woody w/ power sword
Utility-belt Buzz w/ power fist

EL - Rex (Furioso Dreadnought) w/ blood talons

TP - Tactical Squad (x2)
Space marine (x9) w/ meltagun, multi-melta, drop pod
Veteran Sargent w/ power fist

TP - Tactical Squad
Space Marine (x7) w/ meltagun, multi-melta, drop pod
Veteran Sargent w/ power fist

TP - Army Men (Scout Squad)
Scout (x9) w/ bolters, missile launcher
Veteran Sargent w/ combi-plasma

TP - Assault Squad
Space Marine (x4) w/ infernus pistol
Veteran Sargent w/ power fist

HS - Mr. Potato Head (Dreadnought) w/ assault cannon, heavy flamer, drop pod

HS - Hamm the Airship (Stormraven Gunship) w/ extra armor

Total Points - 1848

Buzz Lightyear joins with Sheriff Woody and the 8-man tactical squad. Utility-belt Buzz joins the assault squad and Rex in Hamm the Airship. I may change Utility-belt Buzz to Jessie, but there is plenty of time to make the change. Most likely nothing will start on the board.

The more I look at Captain Tycho the more I like him as a fit for Buzz. Both excell in hand-to-hand combat (but don't use a h-t-h weapon), warriors look to them for leadership, and the are both on the edge of sanity. Of course, fluff-wise, Tycho is dead so that puts a bit of a wrench in the works.

What are people's opinions? To power gamer? Doesn't fit with theme? etc?

Thanks and take care

Great work man, I really like the change to pointing/glove with the combi weapons on the back. If you get the chance, try putting a bedroll instead of a backpack on the sarge. I am imagining it looking pretty cool too. (My wife and I are staying at her parent's for a while, so I have to model vicariously )

Awesome idea! I'm surprised, as someone else said, no one noticed the similarities between Buzz and Space Marine armor (I noticed it when my youngest received his first Buzz as a Christmas present...hey! That's a Space Marine! Happier at least...).

Keep up the great work! My youngest is now way past modelling, but I have a younger son who's just hitting his 5s...perfect time for an introduction.

I'm somewhat confused on the tac squads, don't they have to be 10 to have a melta and multi-melta so why is one 7, and the other 9? just a typo?

I would go for razorbacks rather than drop pods, but to each their own. I guess with razorbacks it would be better to have assault squads

Thanks. My oldest son is almost three. He walks around the house saying things like "You are a Toy! You're an action figure. A child's plaything." He is still a little young for 40K, but his favorite army book is Imperial Guard. The way he says it makes it sound much more adorable

Two Tac squads are 10 and one is 8. The way I wrote it is confusing. To me drop pods fit the theme better than Razorbacks and I already have the pods

I am starting on the Tac squads. I am thinking backpacks will be with wings retracted and save wings deployed for the assault squad. Also, I plan on mounting bolters on wrists/ forearms. Any other ideas/

Hi all,

We finally have had some low humidity days here in north Jersey. I was able to bascoat the Army Men and Rex using Army Painter: Color Primer Army Green (pics below).

I will be putting this project on hold for a wee bit. I finally got a few games in with my Guard army (found here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/346410.page) and discovered that sentinel squads are terrible. I need to spend a few weeks getting three vendettas ready to go.

This little blog has a lot of cool stuff in...I am particularly liking the strong theme that you have going on...the 'green army men' are priceless!

Just one thing to note...if you plan on using these in tournaments, don't they have to have a minimum amount of colours (three, isn't it)?

With regards to the green men, can I suggest a wash with dark green and a gloss varnish? I think they would look even more 'in theme' than they do now if you did that.

I am SO looking forward to some painted Star Command marines!

Hi all,

I know its been awhile, but I needed some time away from painting. Also, I needed to add three flyers to finish my Cadian army in time for MechaniCon.

Time to start painting Army Men

Just a few abbreviations to note.
VGC = vallejo game color
GW = citadel
LBs = I made a few washes/inks based on LBursley's article (found here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261541.page)

I started by painting three test models. "A, B, C"
C turned out to be a dud for Army Men, however it works for Rex .

The following pics show most steps. I forgot pics of a fews and

The models were primed with Army Painter Army Green.

Step 1 - "A" (left) - Green Ink. "B" (middle) - LBs Algae Wash. "C" (right) - VGC Camo Green than LBs Algae Wash.

"A" step 2 - VGC Sick green

The remaining steps have photos and are sorted by a, b, and c.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks and take care

I'm leaning towards B myself. The next questions is: Green faces or Flesh colored faces?

I can make arguments for both.

For Green - They are army men and should be completely green. Duh!
For Flesh tones - Looks more lifelike and helps break up the monotone color scheme.

I will work on a test model.

HI all,

A couple of "skin" test models are complete. Ultimately, I've decided to go with normal flesh tones. Mainly because I like how they look. Also because I don't plan on having any models look exactly like their movie counterparts (Buzz will be close) and I want the army to have a "grimdarky" feel. I'll be trying to balance a bit of humor with smidge of buttkickedness and a wee spot of grimdark.

I don't know Perhaps you don't have someone walking around house constantly saying "To Infinity and Beyond".

Now that the paint scheme has been finalized I've been working on a few models. I typically paint two or three at a time. For some reason this seems to the best method (for me) when wanting to do better than table top. Typically the bases are done as a squad.

The missile launcher, parachuter 1, plus the bolters from the test models are all in the first batch.

Hi all,

The missile launcher and parachuter 1 are complete (along with test model A & B)!

All-in-all it takes 15 steps per model.
Steps 1 - 6 are green.
Steps 7 - 12 are flesh.
Step 13 assemble. Assembling scout models was surprisingly a pain in the tuckus.
Step 14 matte varnish.
Step 15 basing.

Next up are Sgt. Hartman and red shirt #1.
