OH-I Wanna get out of here

Because I'm really liking the style and quality (chipping looks great!), I'll be sticking around. Would be nice if you could clean up the picture coding so we dont get a bunch of code that dakka doesnt use. Quote my quote to see what it looks like

nerdfest09 wrote: Well, I was going to wait, but I underestimated how inspirational doing my own blog would be and I jumped into my brushes again today and took a couple of shots to show you all and see what you think? any hints or direction you think I should take with him? I like the 'arches' on the sarcophagus, I was unsure at first what to do with it as I don't like anything too 'busy' with most of my stuff, but I think it looks just about right, only thing I am not really happy with is his helmet, I started painting this guy last year and put him away for ages only partially done and now I've gotten more patience and a few more tricks up my sleeve it's not as good as i can do, but I can't pull it apart to change either, so i'll work with what i've done and see how i go!

on with the pics then

Woo Hoo there we go! hope you like? more work on him tomorrow, sorry about the quality of the pics at the moment but when they're all done I'll get my cousin to take some professional shots to show you!

Thats some really great work your turning out there. I like your not affraid to try different techniques. I have an idea for a similar army myself.

I was going to go with a black undercoat, with a dry brush coat of Boltgun metal with a coat or 2 of Badab black, then pick out sum of the detail again with boltgun metal and a tiny bit of chainmail. But ur technique pretty much gets me to the end finish i was looking for. I know youve been asked a hundred times but could you private msg me a little info about ur technique. A copy and paste from other would suit me if you havent got the time fella lol

Once again, looking good mate. Looking forwards to seeing more of your work!!!

The dread looks as if it has seen action for a long time! How did you get the paint on the dreadnought to look weathered and chipped?

@Rex-nine, no problem dude, i'll pm you tomorrow night and let you know how i did it, the weathering is done by drybrushing boltgun metal over a black undercoat and then sponging on a liquid mask medium, once it's totally dry then I paint the figure as usual and then peel off the mask using a bit of blu tac or something similar, this leaves it all nice and 'chipped' then I add some more mithril silver to boltgun metal and add some scratches and highlights to the chipped bits, and hopefully it looks right, sometimes I go overboard with the mask and it looks a bit too much, it's also the way i painted my wolf guard terminators in my gallery, hope this helps you out?

I've noticed people are always including pics of their most loyal companions when they do a blog! so I thought i'd better contribute my two furry kids in the mix, they should get a shout out too, as they are always around when i'm working on my mini's especially my boy Oscar, he's just like a big floor mat always next to me while Issabella will prowl around and nudge my brush hand if I ignore her for too long!

Oscar the big guy!

well that's the kids! i'll be working on assembling my devastators tonight so i should show some progress soon for you all!

Would be nice to come for a visit a week or two some day.

The dread comes along perfectly, cant find anything to add or complain on, maybe the mold line on the ascan barrel.

How many nerdfests are there anyway, 09, 10 etc. Its an infestation...

Well excitement turns to frustration today! I got my couple of packages in the mail, and recieved my vinyl stickers from Zinge and my mechanical parts from Puppetswar, they were both really good and only had two resin parts break in transit, so not too bad but they did travel a long way to get here! the stuff from zinge is really good too, only frustrating thing I found was the chapter logo for my marines exemplar is very fiddly and won't pull off the sheet or stick down well on the pads :-( I tried heating them up and using a scalpel to place them on and then a dab of glue but no luck! :-( so I may need to come up with something else now? I was really hoping to use them as they look really good. maybe someone out there can make me some waterslide decals to use?

well since I won't be using them I can do stage two then, i'm about to use my can of Army painter dragon red to get my base colour on the arms, just waiting for the sun to come out......waiting.......waiting.....still waiting, I don't want to rush doing them incase the spray mucks up? i've never used it before and i've heard it's tricky to use, but as soon as I get it done I can start putting them together and doing my highlights with my airbrush that again i've never used before! lets hope it warms up here soon!

Since being dejected by the chapter logo I decided to work on my arms....4 sets of 25 at 20kg..... kidding!

I am including a pic of the logo on the pad I was working on, so you can see the actual item is good but the design and curvature make it hard to sit right, i'm thinking waterslide would be better now as I can use microsol and microset to help it out.

I used the army painter primer on some spare sprue before I did my marines arms, and it appeared to work quite well, although I did notice that while it covered well and didn't obscure any details it did go on slightly thicker than what I was accustomed to, if you weren't careful you could quite easily go too thick and ruin what you were priming, I think it works well and will use it again.

another first for today....airbrush! trial by error. primed the arms in dragon red and then mixed up a very dark mix of red and black and proceeded to lightly airbrush underneath the arms and around the rims of the pads, problem was without noticing I'd basically re painted the whole arm! so i added more black to get more shadow and had another easy go at it, this time they looked better but as you can see in the pics they look too subtle and nearly like just solid colour! grrrrr!

I'm not sure how to progress with them now, to keep the style and ease of painting which was my main goal for this army I feel I should maybe add a devlan mud wash in the recesses and see how a pure blood red highlight looks? and since I was an eager beaver and glued them on already I can't do more air work.

Now everyone's favorite nerdfest09 was starting to lose inspiration and focus! what ever to do!...oh yes, look at my other resin bits from puppetswar that'll fix it! and it did I picked them out and had them with my models to see how they worked with them, I was stoked at the imagery I obtained when I held up the bionic powersword arm on my assault squad captain, I could just imagine him screaming from the darkened heavens blade blazing in a furious arc towards numerous foes, his mind geared and thoughts unwavering towards utter destruction of his enemy..... yeah that'll do it

well that's it for today for me, i'm now off to have a shower and then relax and sit down and watch Harry Potter!
please as usual give me any feedback or suggestions, I hope you all like how it's going so far?

Here we go again! and this time i'm pumped! I started building my landraider as a break from the marines that i had had enough of for the time being and I am enjoying it immensely, I used my airbrush again and came across a few issues but i'm still happy with how it turned out considering it was only it's second time out of the box.

Well now first things first I undercoated the sprues chaos black and then clipped off the parts I needed and pushed the two hulls together, then I gave the outside of each one a good brush with boltgun metal then a stippling of mithril silver.

Next step was to just dab a little watered down blazing orange in parts over the hulls.

Now that was the quick bit, next thing I did was use a masking liquid, in this instance I used a Humbrol liquid mask and a small piece of fine steel wool and stippled it very gently over parts I felt would get some good chipping and wear and tear.

Whilst this was drying on the body of my raider, i thought i'd give some of the interior a quick paint, nothing too time consuming as it would be rarely seen but just a neat representation that would still hold up with the rest of the models in the army, it turned out well and I am actually happier than I thought i'd be with how it looks.

Once the mask had dried I busted out the can of Dragon red army painters colored primer! and I must say i like the product, it gave a nice color and good coverage without obscuring any details, you can see in the pic the 'bubbles' under the paint which are where the mask is and where the chipping will be when i pull it off.

Righto, now it was time to get out the dreaded airbrush for it's second time out, I still had some issues as i'm teaching myself how to run it, sometimes the paint came out too fast with too much pressure so i turned it down and it was better, then the paint came out a bit too 'speckly' not too bad and I did continue with it like that as the effect wasn't bad when you considered the whole model, i'll let you be the judges, but practice makes perfect right? next time I hope i'll get better again, I wasn't sure how to shade the raider so i went the safe route and just went on the lower half and a small burst across the top.

While the airbrush was scaring the bejeezus out of me when it turned itself back on when i wasn't ready! I decided when my heart stopped beating a mile a minute to forgive it and use it to paint the hold of the model, so using barley gray from Vallejo air paints I did....

I was really, really liking how it was working out for me so far, a few errors but nothing to disheartening at this stage, the break from my marines is a good choice I think and has kept the fire burning for this army project, it's always something I love to see on my shelf when you can put a nice tank with a squad of marines charging out into the battlefield, mind you on my shelf the battlefield consists of 40k novels and a few transformers toys! not exactly threatening!.....although if Bumblebee gets riled up!......
moment of truth now, and it's time to peel off the mask, for this task I used a small blob of Blu tac on the end of a brush and brushed it over erasing the mask from under the paint, as it peels away I'm loving the look so far, and tomorrow once I get back into it I shall hopefully add some highlights with a normal brush but I feel the actual chipping and weathering is fine without going crazy and trying to touch it up more.

Nice I think so far, now I put the rest of the model together and got a feel for where to go next with it, the more i look at it the more i am happy with my choice of chapter, I love the splash of red throughout with the nice black armor, I think they are a striking looking army and i can't wait to keep moving on with them hopefully producing some models that you all like out there! I took one pic of the Raider together before I gave it up for the day and watched Predators with a mate of mine!

Well that's it unfortunately for me today, I hope you can give me some honest feedback and i'll get working on it more tomorrow and hopefully be able to post pics up soon

Looking good nerdfest. On the speckles you get from your airbrush, it's most likely b/c you're either not watering down the paint enough or the psi isn't high enough or perhaps both. The masking looks like it came out great. Looking forward to seeing more progress

Thanks guys for the compliments! I did some more basic work on it this morning but nothing to post yet hopefully next week I should have it finished and more pics!

@ Eggroll, thanks for the advice, I thought originally I had too much psi, so I dropped it down, maybe I should have gone higher, and if I remember correctly when i did the barley grey inside I added more thinners and it went on smoother, so now i've got a good start for next time, higher psi and plenty of thinners! until i get a bit more confident with it I may just use it to do my tanks and just ink and highlight the marines, but we'll see how I go? I may get inspired to just do it anyway! :-)

@ Pyriel, sorry me old friend but as yet nothing has graced my doorstep from you :-( be assured as soon as it does the pics will be up and i'll be bustin' out that rhino quick smart! :-)

until next we meet.....may the emperor protect!

Imagine this, a sleepy Nerdfest09 in his underwear woken by a knock on the front door! bleary eyed and barefoot he stumbles his way to answer the knock, grumbling as he turns the knob only to find.... a smiling young lady holding a package from Chapterhouse! bashfully apologizing about his underwear he quickly takes the offered package and smiling shuts the door behind him, exulting cries of joy he tears open the box to find.....
Pre heresy drop pod doors!

Mk1 Rhino kit

Combi bolters

The most awesome Rhino tactical skull doors!

Pre heresy jump packs

An assortment of great heads for some fantastic looking conversions!

A great storm shield and Exorcist shoulder pad for a librarian conversion

And some cool as, Inqusition doors for a rhino I think.

WOW, i'm super happy with that lot of stuff for my army, looks like i'm going to be a very busy boy/man in the next few weeks! all the cast pieces were excellent with minimal flashing and everything appeared to be very straight with no major warping, all in all i'd have to say that this package from Chapterhouse is some of the best quality i've seen, it's funny how the larger companies can send me stuff all bent and crappy but the smaller people who i've ordered from always send good stuff! good on you independent companies!

Ooh one last thing before I sign off to go and model some more, I managed to do some work on the frag assault launchers for the front of the landraider, still a bit more to go but I like them!

Well that's it from me today, I only got the package an hour ago but I was so excited I just had to tell you all about it! now I can go and enjoy Pyriels package at my leisure and work on that rhino first!

Until next time......Nerdfest09

I know that masking liquid has opened up a world of oportunity for my modelling style I love it and will probably use it on all my vehicles in the future, like the rhino's with those awesome chapterhouse hatches :-)
