Subject: True cost of a Death Star, or why I can't take over the Galaxy
Well...
A star destroyer, depending on class, can range from 500m to 3,800 in length.
It would take between 35.5 billion rashers and 269.8 billion rashers of bacon.
The larger one would wigh aproximately 7.55 billion kilograms.
The average pig produces 3,200 rashers of bacon...

OP, your avatar made this thread for me, dunno why.
I'd guess that the emprah had an entire galaxy of Iron at his disposal, so that wouldn't be too big of a concern. Plus, he could just threaten workers with death if they didn't build it, so you can take contracting out of the picture
Always though the death star was a silly idea, especially since they have those Super Star Destroyers, which are plenty big.
You really couldn't figure out how to put a lazor on that? Abaddon managed to do it!

The Death Star was never a military tool. It was a political tool. It was like nuclear weapons today, being really scary and a great deterrent. But, practically worthless.
Derp derp you typed weight instead of mass therefore you're an idiot derp.
An object with a large gravitational pull would make it much more difficult for docked spacecraft to take off.
Since a deathstar would be mostly filled with air, it would have signicantly less mass than a panetoid of similar size, plus you wouldn't have to dock ships simply sling shot deliveries to the construction site at an acceptible velocity.
As for construction material. You would probably find more than enough suitable raw materials within an asteroid belt. Since Endor orbits a gas giant it is probably close to such a belt.
As for construction time: The Empire would have access to the manpower of thousands of planets so man hours wouldn't be an issue.
The main problem would be the logistics of supplying goods and services to such a large workforce, I can only imagine that there must be some form of farming with in the structure unless the workforce is entirely made up of droids. Given that the workforce could live within the completed parts of the structure the workforce could increase as construction progresses so the rate of construction would increase on an exponential curve.
Even with the Empire draconian HR policies administration would be a total nightmare too.
The best solution would be to have droids that construct constructor droids that then do the work. Not quite a von neuman machine but it would get the job done at a rate equal to the supply of materials.
Thats what I was going to say, why not mine asteroids? Some of them have more minerals then the entire earth and is a lot easier to mine. Man hours like you said wouldn't and shouldn't be a problem. Like you said construction driods would be the way to go. They don't need food, they don't need to sleep and if one breaks down you just replace it with a identical one.

Is that right? In the first film it travelled from alderaan to the planet where the rebel base was and there was not mention of any towing.
Well, we don't see it traveling at all. And, looking at how incredibly long it takes it to maneuver around a planet to get a shot at Yavin 4, it seems the Death Star is incredibly slow.
So, either all of Star Wars is taking place inside a single solar system (my personal theory, if you only look at the movies and not the EU), or something needs to tow that thing around.

There are very many separate solar systems in the Star Wars universe
Also, IMO The Death Star SHOULD have been made of Bescar (Mandalorian Steel) it's incredibly strong the shell may have even withstood the reactor explosion. Also, the Empire was strip mining Mandalor for Bescar anyway, so...

The death star had its own hyperdrive and sublight drives.
It didn't need to be towed anywhere.
It was a political tool and symbol of oppressive power. The fleet is the military power. You can defend against a fleet, but when this metal moon shows up and obliterates your homeworld, you kind of stop fighting.

The takeaway is this: when you're running an empire of 1.7 million worlds where each has an Earth-like economy that has developed for another 500 years, it's really not that expensive of a weapons system.
It's about the cost of an aircraft carrier.

Okay, I think I've got it now, I need to conquer the Galaxy first then build a Death Star right? So... does anyone know how much the Super Star Destroyer is gonna cost me? What? How much?? Oh Feth it...
You use the resources of the first planetary system you conquer to conquer a second then use the resources of two systems to conquer two more and so on.
1,2,4,8,16...
In no time at all you have enough resources to build a Star destroyer, then a super star destroyer and finally you have enough saved up to build a deathstar.
Easy.

i would say it's more like a SM Space Monastery ie isn't very good at manoeuvring in sublight due to a massive inertia yet has FTL drives which also it travel around their respective universe
