Let's put it this way, I never feel the need to dedicate units to hunt down Bolt Throwers, stone throwers or most other warmachines, cannons I generally feel the need to have to hunt them down.

Have you had to go up against 6 bolt throwers? Cheaper than 2 cannons and generally more effective.

So. I got a game with this list in. First game in at least 3-4 months.

I've gone up against 4, pretty regularly. I've used up to 4 (haven't tried 6 yet), the only time they have really hurt bad was if I made a mistake and gave a easy flank shot at something like Cold One Cav.

How many six bolt thrower lists do you run into? How many 2 Cannon lists do you run into? I've been lucky, our empire player generally brings 1 Cannon, 1 Volley Gun and another cannon on the steam tank. It could be worse.

I see 6 with goblins really often (like, just about every O&G list).
I see 4 repeater bolt throwers fairly often (usually with high elves, sometimes with dark). The 4 shots at BS4 is about as good as the 6 shots at BS3 (it's just that the 6 goblins shots are cheaper).
2 cannons, it's dwarfs, empire, ogres and daemons that can do it, but ogre/daemon cannons are more expensive (and harder to kill) and dwarf cannons tend to be even more expensive.
In the old book, I ran pirate dwarfs, with 3 cannons and 6 bolt throwers (with no upgrades).
The threat from massed bolt throwers, it's the same thing that cannons fire at. A bunch of S6 no save hits doing multiple wounds.

On a side note, I've gone up against the 9 bolt army of dark elves (2 lords on scourge chariots, 3 scourges as specials, 4 repeat bolt throwers as specials), and I've fought the high elf version with 8 shots (shadow king, 3 flying bolt chariots, 4 rare bolts). Despite having one less shot, the high elf version seems to do much better, as the flying chariots can hide behind other units and shoot over or charge over as needed, and it doesn't hurt that you can squeeze a frost phoenix in the list. The bolt spam really punishes monstrous cav and monster based armies, more so than cannons do.

Hmmmm my meta is different, generally the bolt throwers are firing in the multiple shots mode. Good point, and it is punishing to monstrous cav, monsters ect, but still doesn't explain the preferential treatment cannons get vrs characters mounted on monsters, or the ability for cannons to snipe characters from over half way across the board.

As a wood elf player I pretty much have bows and treemen. That's it. So don't go moaning that you need to be able to use your cannons like a sniper rifle.

...and a dragon.
