Sell them. 40k sells incredibly well. My last sold army sold for 81% of the original GW price - that's pretty darn good. Takes some time, of course, but the price makes up for it.

When you're deluded into thinking that some girl will like you better if you weren't into geeky stuff sometimes you do crazy stuff like I did and throw stuff out... in the dumpster... everything... miniatures, paints, videogames, comic books, books, figurines, collectibles... EVERYTHING... because some how magically the lack of these things will make you more appealing to her.

So yup... some people actually toss miniatures.

Runnin up on ya.

I throw it away or give it away if someone pays for shipping; I threw away a ton of Mantic res-crap and gave the rest away to someone who was willing to pay shipping. Once I'm done with something, I'm done and it's really a lot easier to toss it in the trash than try and find someone to take it off of my hands.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

This has been my experience as well. GW has a great resale value. I realize that some folks live in areas where the market is much smaller for certain lines, but I buy used and often resell later if the figs aren't exactly what I was looking for or something else catches my fancy. I almost never lose money on buying and selling minis, especially GW

Yep. Between Bartertown, my local forum and here, I haven't actually paid for my hobbies in a couple years. Buy 40k, resell it for a profit, use it to fund more hobbies.

I melted down most my old GW miniatures...into the smelting pot they went.

Actually, with the exception of a few figures from other companies, most my "human" figures went in the pot to be reborn as new figures over the last 8 years or so. I find it to be the best cure for heroic scale figures.

Wow. I hope no Confrontation or Sisters of Battle met that fate.

I sell mine.

When I finally quit, I didn't have all that many 40K armies in metal left. Grey Knights (125 metal figures) and Sisters of Battle (nearly 200) plus a couple full units of each Eldar Aspect, Rangers, Wraithguard, a Harlequin Army (70 some odd figures) and some assorted metal 'Nids. OK - so maybe I had a few metal figures. I know that they ended up returning as roughly 600 1/48 scale figures plus assorted weapons, vehicle bits and terrain gribblies. Could have probably sold them for more than the metal price...but than I would have had to mess around with selling them and then mess around with sourcing ingots for casting (which initially I didn't know much about since I had just bought the spin cast machine on a whim).

Nice! That's been my method and my goal, for a quite a long time, but I don't think I've ever quite managed it, especially since the wife and I started playing MtG. Still, the wargaming hobby has been REALLYcheap for a number of years now and I've even been able to occasionally put some $ into the household expenses.

Malifaux was my first miniatures game. When my group had a falling out over the edition change from 1.5 to 2.0, we pretty much stopped playing flat out. Eventually I ended up giving a friend roughly 1/4 of my collection, sold off another quarter, and kept the rest. That the models which remain include some of my favourite/better paint jobs and/or have sentimental value based on who gave them to me is not a coincidence.

So a mix of "keep" and "sell".

I've still got my Salamanders from 3rd edition. I've still got my Tyranids from 5th and 6th, even though I don't play 40k anymore. I swear I'll finish that Heirophant one day.

Unfortunately I don't have my Chaos, Tyranids or Orks from 2nd edition, which were lost over about 5 house moves.

I don't like getting rid of hobby stuff. I've even got a block of dried red paint from my palette.

I sell or trade. Let the minis go into the hands of someone who still cares. I know that eventually my apathy would lead to them getting broken and trashed by random household events anyway.

If your GW stuff is old enough, you can get more for it than you paid in the first place

I keep EVERYTHING.
Most of the models that I have will be used in other games, most notably those downloaded from "here".
Everything has its uses, from Epic infantry stands in 'A Fist Full of Tripods' too LOTR minis and Skaven in the various historical and fantasy rules.

Free from GW's tyranny and the hobby is looking better for it

If it's painted I'll keep it forever

If it's not painted I'll try to keep it although I've had a couple of major sell offs of pretty much everything I had when I was out of work and in need of money

Keep models that I put lots of effort into, such as conversions or painting, sell/trade models that I didn't really care for.

For example, my old Cadians got traded as they were stock and unpainted, as were my Ork Boyz. But I kept a lot of my officers, converted guardsmen and Orks, especially my nobz, bikers, and war boss. No idea on if I'll ever get back to 40k again, but in the meantime I can always use them for something else and paint them to look pretty.

Couldn't imagine throwing minis out. Everything I own is worth at least a bit of trade value so throwing it away would be stupid. Maybe if you had some really crappy looking old generic models you could get away with it, but throwing away old GW models or something? For the prices some go for these days? That would be nuts!

I have never really quit a game. I just take extended breaks. I keep all my models, weather I plan to use them later or not. I get attached to my stuff, and enjoy expanding an army even if I dont use them. I have considered trading some 40k/Fantasy stuff in for some more FoW and some oop GW and Forge World stuff, but have not yet.

I'm from the future. The future of space

I tend not to get miniatures that are too tied to a single rules set. Lately I've only been purchasing rules and miniatures from separate companies. If I get tired of a given game, I'll just switch to new rules or new miniatures I like better. So there's not really a need to get rid of anything as they are still available playing pieces for new rules.

That said, if I have unpainted stuff, I'll get rid of it without much delay if I don't think I'm going to want to paint it in the future.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Some I sell, some I keep, some I throw away.

Dumped about 30 GW books in the charity shop the other day - various army books and codices from 4th WFB/2nd 40K through to today. Inc the two recent main rulesbooks.
