Started in 3rd, and been in the hobby ever since.

I remember my former band mate (who used to work in a hobby store) trying to get me into 2nd for years, but it got nowhere.

Started playing RT (and WHFB 1st ed before that, but that's a different topic). Basically stopped for a few years when 2nd got too overly cumbersome and my gaming group split up with folks moving hither and yon... 3rd brought me back into the fold. Still not 100% sure if I'll stay with 40k into 7th...

Well, actually the beginning of the 3rd ed.

But I was told that 2nd ed was much better.

Started in 3rd with the "then new" Tau. Played through 4th and 5th(5th being the toughest time for my beloved Tau but the best core rules to date, imo.)

Started 6th and it was just a no go. Instead of refining what was a good edition into something better, it's as if GW said, "Screw the game and fluff. Lets see how many models we can get these suckers to buy".

Looked into 7th and it was worse.

Now trying to decide if I should wait for another edition, wait for or write a "pathfinder" equivalent or should I sell off my 30k pts worth of models.

Really miss the rules, community and campaigns of 3rd - 5th ed.

I got into 40K just as RT was coming to a close, but I never owned any RT stuff. The first 40K rulebook I got was 2nd Ed, so I voted 2nd Ed.

People I play with now quit 4th/5th and came back in 6th if that helps.

Though, like most people, it's less of a quit more of a shuffling of priorities or hobbies etc, not having time or people to play with, and later reviving and playing again, no one has serious problems with rules for 6th or 7th comparatively.

Started in RT, didn't play more than a handful of 2nd ed games, and stopped playing actively in 5th - but had ONE game of 6th - and that was enough to make me stop playing (not to make me SELL my stuff, just stop buying more and playing it).

Interesting to see how it balanced out. Surprised that there's so many people from RT and 2nd edition still around.

Started in 3rd, quit in 5th. Quitting was mostly due personal and fiancial reasons (couldn't invest the time then and needed money so sold all my stuff), but I was mild to moderately annoyed with changes 5th brought. 5th Didn't bother me enough to drive me from the game.

Interested in starting again, but I'm not playing 6th or 7th and not paying retail for models. So I'm stuck with a desire, but GW policies keep me away for now.

Working on homebrewing rules, and looking into picking up stuff on ebay, then I'll start playing with my kids. Got one old enough to get started with now. Would like to get back into the game, but GW has to make changes before I will give them my money to any significant extent.

Started in 2nd. Quit when I went off to the Marine Corps. Didn't pick it back up again till 6th. I used this as my RPG fix. 36 at the time with 3 kids, most my buddies were in the same boat. Getting 5-6 of us together more often then twice a year was impossible. So no more RPGs for me. Sad face because that was my creative outlet. So I started sniffing around a LGS and heard 40k was back and it was good. I jumped in feet first. No regrets. Love where the game has gone.

Started in 5th edition. Quit in 6th edition when Tyranids came out.

Escalation is what killed the game for me (and its subsequent incorporation into the rules in 7th edition). I haven't played a game or bought anything from GW since the Tyranid codex hit. I hold out hope that they will return to a "rules minded" gameset at some point, but with my upcoming move to a new house I'm already considering pawning off a few armies as well as having been sucked into other miniature games in the meantime (Malifaux is amazing).

Yeah, escalation was a bit much, and now apparently they're just trying to get people to be okay with Lords of War, but whatever. What was so wrong with the Tyranid Codex though?

I started collecting models and playing small games with my best friend beck during the middle years of 2nd edition. far enough back that I can remember seeing Squats being sold (new!) in the store I frequented. We would play the occasional "real" game of 2nd edition (Chaos versus Ultramarines), but in reality my largest 40K exposure started when we played the game called Tyranid Attack (also called Advanced Space Crusade).

Frankly the most gaming I experienced with the 2nd edition ruleset was actually Necromunda, though I started collecting both my Sisters of Battle and my Necrons when they first debuted in their respective White Dwarf issues during 2nd edition. So in the days of 5th and 6th edition, it was truly fun when people here on Dakka would claim I was only playing Necrons because they were the newest powerful meta.

Pfft! I played them back when they were overpowered the FIRST time, not the third!

Started in the last year of 3rd as Oldcrons and later branch into Iron Warriors (hours lost painting hazard stripes) on through 4th but ran into family issues at the start of 5th that had me having to sell off my souless zombots and gunmetal warband.

Later on after heading out on my own I pick restarted as 5th IG and have been faithful to Big E ever since. I'll still play and collect untill I or 40k die, not because I'm a GW fan but because I genuinely love the setting, I upsets me to see it treated like a baseball bat that GW is trying to use to crack open a atm.

It's only 27 years, dude. Some of us were teens back then. It's not like it was back in the time of methuselah.

There's a bunch of guys I know who also played RT and 2nd, but then have only come back into 7th (having not 'played' 3rd through 6th - although half DID work for GW during some of that time, and I've learned that the job killed the hobby for several.)

I don't consider myself old, but I am definitely one of the older people I've met who is still involved with 40k in some way, and I was only 8 when 2nd edition came out So I guess I find it surprising so many people started in those days (I myself started 2nd in the mid 90's),

Some old minis hold up well. Some (like the nid warrior) even the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia can’t save. Do they make rose-colored bi-focals?

Lol it is a truely terrible model! I also have a daft looking mega armoured ork warboss who is only slightly larger than one of those ridiculous mono-pose marines.
Remember when the box of ten tactical marines that you could position how you liked came out (only £10 too!)? Everyone thought it was amazing after years of mono-pose models!

I started playing when space wolves were first released, so the tail end of RT i guess. i really got into the game during 2nd ed with Sisters, then Eldar. 3rd edition was a massive improvement over 2nd imo, the rules were streamlined significantly. but i missed 4th, half of 5th being at university. soured somewhat during 6th, and i've stopped playing in 7th.

I'll keep my figures, if anything painting a company of imperial fists will be a triumph of the will! and GW may see sense and release a game thats actually, you know, balanced, and has rules that, you know, work.
