I painted my khador purple, silver and gold. Id say that's a little different. Still kept the snow theme for the bases thought

I still haven't painted mine (no time, no space, no money) but when I get around to it I intend to paint my Cryx a dark yellow/light brown, probably with brass metal.

My Cygnar are either gonna be Orange and brass or I'm going to go full tongue-in-cheek and paint them blue, white, and yellow and festoon them with Ultramarines icons.

If you're looking for a cohesive battlefield story telling perspective, sure.

If you think of it as non-gridded chess, why paint them?

Different strokes and all that.

That's freaky how much it looks like mine.

The black body / bone armour plates is a pretty common alternative paint scheme for Legion.

While the tourney requirement from PP relaxed on painting, most TO's will still require painting. I think the most relaxed on I've been to was minimum 3 colors.

Painting really makes the units identifiable; just a spray of whit or grey from the base model, you have to REALLY look at it closely to determine what it is, especially between smaller models.

Well since I am playing Legion, I have picked my color scheme I believe. At least, a start of it. The flesh of the war beasts is going to be a light purple, with bone colored exo plates. The flesh of the Ogryn is going to be that pale blue, the flesh of the Nyss is going to just be pale flesh, the armor is going to be purple, and not sure on the color of the cloth. Pretty sure I do not want to do red or green, but not sure

As someone who plays multiple games it's always funny to look at the paint requirement compared to the game.

40k is mostly feth it use grey plastic if you want & the upper tournament scene is full of army-hoppers whose meta changes with the tide. When they do have paint reqs people do gak like and the throng of people who defended it with "well it meets the reqs so feth his style of tourny & wanting to make it visually appealing LAWL go wreck face & show those fluff bunnies what a real player is like", and that just disgusts me and many players find it insulting. We put in hundreds of hours to paint our armies & you show up with what is clearly a way to get your 3rd uber unit & skirt the rules.

WM/H used to have it but has been moving away. Personally I like a painting requirement, playing against nothing but shiny metal bores me. It doesn't have to be 100% gorgeous but at least show some effort, or at least show progress. Maybe 1 model gets painted a week? WM/H doesn't require too many models. But then again WM/H bills itself as "Game first, hobby second" which isn't wrong but I belong to the next category mostly.

WHFB tends to have strict painting requirements but tends to have more "hobbyists" than "gamers". We want to see fully painted vs fully painted & have the battle be able to tell a story. The upper tournament players tend to be highly invested in their army and the current state of WHFB makes it very possible to win with any army if you play it right, granted some are easier than others.

Malifaux I've been out of for a while but it was 100% painted & based. I don't know how V2 is but when your army is a dozen or fewer this really isn't hard to achieve.

If you look at the view on painting, I think it tells you a bit about the people who play the game.

Barring Hardcores, I don't think I've ever played in a tournament that had painting requirements...

WM never had a paint requirement unless you're talking about specific events. PP themselves
have only ever required painting for two events, Hardcore and Iron Gauntlet. Maybe
tourneys in your area enforced painting requirements, but that's always been up
to the venue. Adepticon, for example, requires painting for all Warmachine events.

1.) Must've been local then.

2.) Not really I find it speaks to the type of player they are. I find there's a distinction between "gamers" and "hobbyists". It depends where their personal focus lies and there is nothing wrong about being one or the other.
In my experience people who don't paint tend to be more focused on just playing and are usually a bit more cutthroat / serious about winning, and I am NOT saying there is anything wrong with that, just personally I would rather lose with / to a fully painted army than win with/ against grey plastic & shiny metal. It's just an observation that I have found over 10+ years in multiple different regions about the mindset & play styles of those who paint vs those who don't.

Fair enough, but I responded as I did as there's quite a bit
of judging and condescension going on in general even though
I don't think the hobby is big enough to thrive just on people
who are both hobbyists and gamers (an ideal state, if you will).

Don't painted armies perform better on the table top? Mine certainly do, unless they're freshly painted and it's their first outing, in which case they'll suck.

I have in the past stuck to the general color schemes of the studio paint jobs, but I put my own spin on them. So my Khador's primary color was red. The Mercs I am slowly working on are green. The Legion i started are going almost Troll Blood blue (cuz yea I'm a rebel like that).

My Retribution is tan/browns with silver and blues. My Cryx are going to be a mix of colors as I am going more for a pirate theme so they will just be randomized for fun. And my cygnar are leaning towards Red and Silver.

My cryx are painted in White with silver metals and with light blue glow.

The studio scheme is pretty ace, but I wanted to do something a bit different than what I usually do and try my hand at painting white.

My Cygnar are going to look rag-tag. The foot soldiers are going to be black w/ white trimmings, mechanics + support figs are red w/ white trimmings (and eHaley because so rocks it well and is my favorite caster), and my jacks are dark grey and silver. All the icons are going to be rocking blue and (golden, maybe) yellow. I am just deciding on the direction for basing (probably go with plain grass).

Tau- 5000pts
Chaos Daemons- 3000/2000 pts

I've come to the realization that most of my armies are GREEN (as my Eldar and Space Marines are both green)... which is odd, since I most enjoy painting browns and reds. Sorry about the rubbish photos. They are all old.

Khador: Fifth Border Legion "Style". Dark olive green rather than grey-green used by the studio with drab red accents.

Cryx: Light olive green with bone accents.

Cygnar: Khaki/Tan with Cygnar blue accents.

Mercenaries: I'm in the process of repainting my merc warjacks. They will be almost uniformly browns, blacks and dark greens. Jacks will likely be a rag-tag assortment of colors.

Before I started, I was considering putting my blue in Black/Yellow/Red "Elec Man" colors...

But then I got the book, and it's all blue, everywhere. And after being in for a while, I just got it in my head that blue=cygnar.

I have some variations (and might paint Nemo3 as Elec Man yet), but various shades of blue still unify the army.

But, as others have said, they are your models, and you can paint them how you like.

Orks - "Da Rust Gitz" : 3000 pts
Empire - "Nordland Expeditionary Corps" : 3000 pts
Dwarfs - "Sons of Magni" 2000 points
Cygnar - "Black Swan" 100 pts
Trollbloods - "The Brotherhood"
Haqqislam- "Al-Istathaan": 300 points

My Circle dudes are all earthtones, with only a bit of green on the glowing runes and armor plates, and purple here-and-there for cloth.

If I ever rebuild my Khador force, I'm going full-on black, white, red, in that order.

I paint in batches. Occaisionally I will get a painting bug and rattle off 3-5 units, be they FoW, PP, some kind of historical. Then I will get grandios ideas of "finishing" an army, see daylight at the end of the tunnel, only to have life and parenting duties step in and be a painting buzzkill.

My gators are done mostly in an "official" color scheme, but that is chiefly due to them being "gators" and having a plethora of german/soviet/american tank colors to use for browns and greens. I did do my ironback in a red/bone and it looks more Khorne than anything else. I have two casters, a boneswarm, two witch docotrs, and the zombie shamblers to finish on them.

My mercs are Llaelese with either a bone/purple or purple/bone base. I painted like a fiend on my galleon to play with it, and then "life" happened and I still have about 15% left to finish.

I just broken an internal rule and have expanded beyond my two armies and picked up Legion and Convergence. I'm still wrestling with what color scheme to use...I don't really want to use "studio" colors and I don't want to double dip into colors for my other armies. I did discover that my Prime Axiom is either miscast and hollow, or just luckily so. I am currently working on an LED rig to light up some drill holes.

My Cryx jacks are purple and gold and my Satyxis have a purple skintone. The rest are typical undead with no set uniform while the casters and characters have their own scheme. Deathjack even has glowing runes done in glow in the dark paint. My Legion are painted as red dragons with red skin and dark brown armor plates while the elves wear blue cloth, blue tinted steel, and have golden skin (as in bright flesh tones).

My Cryx are pretty much standard colour but i'm trying to mix them up a bit as I expand them.

My Legion are similar to the studio colours but more brown in the theme as me and a buddy picked up the 2player set so I've based them on circle hunters!

The very little Khador that I have are more grey with red as a spot colour. I indeed to go fairly Merc heavy with them so the theme should work across them both.

I keep looking at Cygnar as I think they'd look great in yellow... but alas my Circle playing buddy also has them and we tend not to overlap with the armies we do so heh ho!

Need more 's in my life!
