Anyway everyone knows your todger falls off if you stop collecting/buying.....that's what the game store manager says. Seems legit to me.

Is that how we get gaming girls? They start off as blokes, and then finish collecting?
Eeew!

My hobby collection is limited by a single parameter:

Money

I have none, therefore my collection is complete

Edit: And despite what the hobby has taught me, running around killing wild animals and rummaging through their corpses doesn't generate a lot of money. It does generate a lot of interest from local law enforcement though..

Nowadays, if it's anything i've painted myself, i keep it, no question. I still regret selling models and armies that I spent time and effort over. Anything unpainted or painted by someone else is open for possible eBay in the future.

i spent years playing "collectible mini games" aka the wallet money pits..you know keep buying and buying hoping to get what you need out of each random booster...i eventually pulled the lure out of my mouth and left mini gaming for awhile. I was drawn back in by GW products because i can buy exactly what i want and not just gamble money away hoping i get that one mini i need. WH40k is my outlet for my friends and i to get together and have fun, it by no means dominates the rest of my life or finances, i buy stuff when i have the spare cash. I think one common occurance is people run the finacial well dry, then life kicks in forcing them to dump the hobby. I also think some people value hobbys higher then they are really worth..example:comics...hobbys are for personal pleasure not for finacial gain..if you want a finacial payout in the future then invest your money in stocks or businesses...not a pile of painted plastic

I've been selling off stuff I'll eventually play (painted and in a box but rarely touched) to focus on a couple of systems.

What amazes me is the amount of money my gaming buddies and what Dakka users quote they shell out regularly on Kickstarters. Really drives home that (although hobby wargaming is economical when compared to golf or sport fishing or seeing movies at the theater) this is a money intensive pursuit for most.

I guess this question ultimately comes down to what you collect, how you collect, and especially WHY you collect....

I started back into painting in 08 with 40k in the middle of what turned out to be a pretty terrible deployment to Iraq. Once back from there, I picked up a couple of scale models (My F4U-1A/D Corsair and Spitfire Mk.V/b(TROP)), branching out further into WHFB, DnD miniatures (or rather, cool minis found on the web for sue in DnD games).

Now, as I simply do not do GW games, due to costs, I collect what models I find cool. So, my current projects include some 15mm Historical "armies" (DBA prepackaged forces), a new Cephalyx model, an assortment of random GW minis for RPG games (Ive gotten a box of skeletons and a skeleton "king" type) as well as still more scale models, like my Mosquito, B-17G and a Spitfire Mk.I

For me, painting is one of few ways to calm my nerves and deal with PTSD type stuff/mental health issues, so I make a point to ALWAYS have something that I'm working on painting /assembling. As such, there will never be a time in which I am "done" collecting.

This Is Where the Fish Lives

There is never enough.

I have more models (wargaming miniatures and scale models) than I'll probably ever build and my collection is always growing.

It is my favorite hobby so there is no reason to not keep collecting.

I had said "enough" to buying or a long time. I was generally just building my own stuff, minis, rules, terrain, everything. That was back when I had time but no money.

Now I have money and no time, so a few purchases have started to creep back in.

So the question is really a function of what resources are more limited than the other resource. At least for me.

I suppose it depends if your hobby is collecting or playing games.
I prefer to play games than hoard stuff 'just because'.

So when I have a couple of 'armies' for each game system , I tend to stop.(Maybe add a third if I really like the game.)

And I only really play 3 or 4 games.

But those people who just collect stuff because they like collecting stuff, will always collect stuff!

My dad's in his early 60s and he said to me he doesn't really see the point in painting/collecting anything else right now, since he's got pretty much all the armies he wants for any given game. He's been at it since the 70s, so I guess for him its been about 40 years of collecting miniatures.

Personally, I don't see an end in sight, although I don't have any plans to start bright new armies anytime soon. I've got enough on my plate.

After decades of 40k I decided to collect starter box sets from other wargames, and avoid getting in too deep in collecting models for specific games.

It just hasn't worked out that way for my FoW collection.

When I find a game/faction I like, I buy into it hard. I'll keep buying, building, and painting it until I"m not longer interested (not necessarily when I stop playing with it).

I have an easier time selling off armies than I do exercising restraint with them. Today, compared to five years ago, I have a more varied range of armies (added Cygnar, Bolt Action Germans, Malifaux, Deadzone, Kings of War, and Myth) but far fewer GW armies (i've sold 3k of Tau, 10k of Eldar, 6k of painted Space Marines, 3k of Orks, etc).

My hobby collection is mostly under control with two massive exceptions, and a third getting into form. My IG/AM is well of 13,000 points painted, with more unpainted, and my Cygnar is 430 points plus casters. Both are way larger than even the largest practical game, but I keep buying...

I know that :O the other day I had all my cercle out and I think I have every model short a few warlocks now, including 6 feral warpwolves.
IG is also dangerous army if you want to keep it to a minimum.

I guess it's official then. Any true collector doesn't ever reach a limit. The money factor determines continuity and even then I'm sure most would sell to generate enough income for the new stuff stinging our eyes.

The loop of buying seems un changeable but that would mean games workshop gas nothing to worry about? We continue yo buy anyways even our constant moans of how crappy they run their business and expensive their gear is

To what end are we therefor destined?

Only through chaos can peace be obtained,
Destruction is our future but we shall not fall from it, We will rise up stronger than ever before and stand together united as one,
