The troopers look pretty good for generic mooks. They have a sort of MERCS vibe to them, although less stylized. Of course, their price is their strongest selling point; makes me want to build bigger armies. Considering how crappy the restic Mantic Corporation troops were, and how charming these are, these are beyond competitive with Mantic's products. I'm really excited about the female troopers.

One thing I hope proxy does soon: drones. A HIPS sprue with at least three drones--a treaded one, a flying one and a walker--for the same price could really move.

Future models planned in hard plastic-

1. Sci-fi female troopers
2. Fantasy 28mm Amazon army- B-movie themed instead of Greek.
3. 1/32 scale Javelin car model kit.

Still tinkering in the shop with odds and ends and wanted to post some plans and progress.

Thanks!

Would just like to remind Ken - links are a good thing. Probably in your post and it wouldn't hurt to spend a minute or three doing a signature block...just to keep the masses from having to do that extra work of Googling it.

Yep, IIRC - there are even some test shots (though those might be of the Amazons) on the Proxie blog. It has been a long time coming for figures.

If your producing them in your garage, I'm impressed.

Not quite his garage...it is more of a barn. If you go back through his blog that I linked to, you can find a lot of information about his operation (including some videos he was kind enough to post). Lots of good stuff on the process, and some interesting ingeneering [not misspelled - much of his operation is put together using parts on hand to make it work in the facilities he has available].

Hopefully they sell well enough to justify further expansions into figures (maybe even get a second hand EDM machine for really fine detailing). The nice thing is that the bodies/arms look to be pretty slick for assembly and conversions (something the lack of surface detail is a benefit for...less to scrape off) and there are plenty of relatively inexpensive aftermarket heads that should help make them pop.

Tamburlaine showed me his tonight. They're a bit bigger than I was expecting, but the detail levels are pretty much what I expected. They'll work very nicely for anyone who wants to quickly build a army and get it on the table as fast as possible.

Did have one miscast robot head in a lot of figures with 140 heads. Small issue for me, since I was planning on using the robot heads, but for the price I won't complain.

Would one of the visored "Cobra" heads work to make a leader like Gort?

If he adds different figures for the same price I'd gladly purchase them.

You and me both.

EDIT: I had just seen the render when I wrote that. The plastics in the picture look much more dynamic and clean. I'm looking forward to them.

Well, I received my minis from Proxie, and so far I am pretty happy with them. The detail might be a bit soft, like the old Warzone plastics, so avoid them if casting quality is a dealbreaker for you. For me, they seem fun and come with a lot of optional heads and weapons. Also, they are priced just right so that I can try my hand at all kinds of crazy conversions and then just buy more on a whim to replace my failures. I'll post more thoughts when I get some assembled.

As a project, these are impressive. As a product, the quality isn't there. It would be easier to praise Ken's work if this was a thread in the Painting & Modelling forum and not News & Rumours.

I would guess that their success as a product is determined by the free market. I myself bought two packs and quite like them as generic sci fi dudes. So he got my dollars.

Gotta say they're a little soft for my tastes too, but I don't dislike them, and I think there's plenty of room for them on the market.

I'm impressed by the base toppers and bits too, although I agree with Insaniak that they're a wee bit generic, and I'd be interested to see if there's any other textures or features down the line. Do they fit bases other than the ones shown? (Proxie bases?)

The amazon(?) plastics look good but I prefer more serious/less pinup female troopers. The render is a good step in that direction but I think there are a few tweaks that could be made, e.g. shifting the waist and pelvis down from under her armpits. Lesser nitpicks include the slightly dead face, something odd with the hands, and the big triceps. (few probs with beefy female soldiers if that's the way you're going, but it probably shouldn't bulge like that when the elbow's flexed) Matters more style-related include the hairstyle and the humongous robo-boots. They seem to be popping up on a couple of sci-fi models here and there, but I never understood the appeal of having big, chunky metal cases strapped around their lower legs. Don't they have enough to carry...?

I'm sooo, sooo sorry.

Less detailed sometimes is better if your goal is get some nice stuff painted and on the battle field, although you can't use speed-coat and ink wash as effectively. I paint armies, not figures, so if it fit what I was doing I'd take a pile. I'm willing to buy Proxie stuff because it is unique and cheap, the two main things that attract me to figures these days. I'll be buying some of the amazons for sure. They can stand around behind more detailed figs, and I doubt the difference will be noticeable at tabletop range.

There's a difference between "less detail" and "soft detail" going on here. There are some great, simple figures out there - a lot of old GW models come to mind - but these just look soft and lumpy and I can't really make out much detail on them. They'd be fine for 15mm but at 25 they don't cut it.

Having painted a few, they aren't that bad, and they're definitely worth the money if you want some rank and file nondescript sci fi dudes.

The details are a bit soft on some parts. I had a hard time discerning where some of their armored padding begins and ends, but honestly? If you have a bunch of them in formation together, it won't be that noticeable.

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

If I had kids around ten or eleven wanting to learn how to paint/play, this could be a good way of getting some cheap spammable figures for them to use before moving onto more expensive higher quality stuff. Definitely a niche there.

They may not have lots of sharp details, but they do have a nice design. Not only are they plastic sci-fi minis without Stahlhelms, but they actually have 3 distinct heads that give the generic bodies character. For me, the design is more important than the sharpness of detail. The visor heads are my favorite followed by the enclosed 'robot' heads. The simplicity of the kits means they are easy and fast to assemble. In my opinion, they are very much background mooks style models who won't overshadow their leaders or hero models. They have enough detail to look like slightly futuristic faceless soldiers without all the fiddly bits or ornament you might find on a main character. They could be less soft for sure, but they aren't exactly Ice Age Mammals, either.
