My local GW store has a table with a lip which is nice.

There are Ikea tables that are quite cheap that ate 6x2, and you can double them up for 6x4, and there are quite a few folding tables (like one at Costco) that can be doubled up for 6x4+. Then all you need is a sheet of plywood from home depot.

If you have access to a large vehicle, a used pool table from Craigslist can be had for very cheap (or free) if you keep your eyes peeled.

Sounds like one of those Geek Chic gaming tables that were on Shark Tank last season. I want one of those things, but... $$$$$.

It doesn't need to be rare hardwood with fancy crafting.

$200 for 2x 30" cabinets as the base
$25 for 2x 4'x8' sheets plywood (playing surface, & understorage),
$50 for 4'x8' topper
$25 for poly deck stain

Assuming you already have the tools, etc. the price for a permanent gaming table could be under $300 in materials.
