Sounds great but my man cave handles a 4x4 table just fine. 7x5 just doesn't work for everyone. But if you have the room it is a cool idea. But most people default to 4x6.

So, I'm toying with the idea of making a bigger table with an open center where I can slot in different boards with different terrain and layouts. That way I can switch things up from game to game.

It's more of a longer term project to be sure, but I think it would be pretty sweet.

You can always have a 4x4 table, then buy some TV tray tables or tray stands as a moveable place to put your army and other accessories. Then you can fold and put them away when not needed.

This is probably a better idea for my living situation. There's not a whole lot of space in my apartment.

When making tables, I recommend making the table out of 2x4 sections instead of 1 4x4 section.

It will store much better that way.

Another option to consider is to buy a FAT mat from Frontline gaming. They are made out of similar material to a mouse pad, they roll up in their own carrying bag, and don't crease. They're also an amazing surface for dice rolling and it allows you to slide your miniatures without worrying about snagging anything. The 4x4 mats are about $70, and they're totally worth it.

2x4 was my size of choice actually, I was looking at some boards yesterday.

I actually saw those mats yesterday too while perusing eBay, but I wasn't sure about them. I'll have to give them a closer look today.

They're awesome.

And all you need to do is add some actual terrain, and warmachine terrain is easy to make.

Forests are usually represented by a felt shape with some removable trees.

Hills are best done by taking hard insulation foam, cutting a shape out of it. Paint the hills brown and roll them in sand, or use textured spray paint, then add some flocking. The hills should have nearly vertical sides as that will allow you to have maximum playability.

I was actually thinking about using foam to make a table. Some of the stiffer stuff wouldn't be to bad and it would allow for some landscaping.

Don't do that.

Sculpted tables are cool, but they are a nightmare for actual play. And because positioning is so key in warmachine you really don't want models to be falling or sliding on slopes. It might end up with someone winning the game unfairly because a model ended up where it wasn't supposed to be.

You want trees that you can remove. Get some green felt and cut out different pattern for your forest. Then go to a hobby store and pick up some of those tree that are on their own individual stands. Like GT said you want to be able to remove the tree to position your models and such.

This is insulation foam I picked up. It seems like it will hold up well under play and shouldn't be too much of a problem. This only a 2'x2' square though. It's the biggest one that they had at HD. If I want to go this route, it'll be a four piece table.
