I play eldar and have good, close matches all the time. It is not the power of the army that does this, it is how you and your opponent choose to play.

Play to have fun and generally you will, regardless of what army you play.

Same reason that I play CSM and get fun, close matches; people at my club play to have fun most of the time. Not that I wouldn't mind the CSM codex getting some actual love and attention

It's really easy to accidentally make an Eldar that crushes many other armies before it. A random assortment of Eldar units are more than a match for any BA list I can possibly field.

And it's really easy to play to have fun. I played against BA fairly regularly at my gaming club and it can be a hard match up for them... but that is where you play to ensure that you both have a good game.

It is not a hard concept to grasp that just because it is possible to use a codex to smash another fairly easily means that you actually have to do it.

It is the same with my CSM. By any measure their codex is... lacking. But I can play my fairly fluffy deathguard nurgle themed list (7 squads of 7 csm on foot) with various support units like havocs and raptors and have fun games against anyone who is not out to just waac.

No list tailoring in my meta, and matchups are random. So are you gonna gimp your Eldar when you might draw Skyhammer? Didn't think so.

Same where I play to a large extent. And yeah, I will take a collection of fun lists and a couple of hard lists with me and ask what people want to play against. If someone I don't know with a rock hard list asks to play against a fluffy list that is what I am going to play them with.

If I get tabled in 20 minutes it just gives me the rest of the game night to go play someone who is not a tool

I recommend researching and testing Quickshade. You can paint an Ork army in a month.

The answer is whichever one you like the looks and fluff of and are willing to spend time building and painting. Funny thing about 40k, you spend at least as much time on the hobby as you do playing. Do you really want to spend hours on an army that does not speak to you?

Orks, Eldar, and CSM could not be more different from a visual and story perspective. Which one looks the coolest to you? Eldar wraith units are my first love, and this was way before they started packing D weapons. Why? Because they look so freaking cool to me! The Eldar codex has a ton of options and you don't need to run bikes if you don't like them. Wraiths are also tough and play very differently than a "standard" Eldar list.

I have started Orks before as well as a CSM army and halfway through I realized I did not like them from a visual and fluff perspective, so I dropped them. But that is my own personal preference. If you like Chaos, take a long look at them. Codex cycles come and go, but your first painted army will be with you a long time. Besides, CSM is due for an update soon, surely.

Several people have talked about winning. If that is all you care about, then by all means, choose from any of the "top tier" armies you hear about. But when you start out, you won't be doing much winning anyways regardless of what you pick and ultimately you will end up army hopping to keep up with the latest and greatest. Pick what you like, find some cool players to help you learn the game, and build and paint an army to be proud of.

Couldn't of said it better myself. I may love CSM with all my heart, but that's because I like the lore and the models. Pick the one that is your favorite army just because it is your favorite army. It'll be hard to not have fun if you really like your stuff. Even when I'm getting curbstomped with my CSM, I have fun just cause the army is my favorite. You also tend to find ways to win when you really put your heart and soul into an army. Which you can only do through research and determination. So, just pick your favorite and roll from there.

"Because we couldn't be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We've all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we've all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher's Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.

The Wolves will always come to the heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn't behave that way. Only a dog does.

That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Khorne daemonkin are a really fun army that is decently competitive and has aspects of both CSM and daemons allowing you to simultaneously build 3 armies orks are fun too but if you want to win and be hated get eldar

Facts are chains that bind perception and fetter truth. For a man can remake the world if he has a dream and no facts to cloud his mind.
