I'd also recommend waiting on infinity until they finally release the other half of the game, otherwise, the majority of models you'll want to play with will have janky outdated rules, or none at all.

Wow, it was a little eerie how closely you described Infinity with the all metal models, both players doing something during the turn, and the clear rules stipulations. They put a lot of work into the N3 rules to try and make them tournamentworthy, and even the intro box is all metal. IIRC you can try the rules out for free if you can find some proxies and a handfull of d20s. The only thing it might fall short on is the desire for a "unique" setting. It's certainly not a 40k clone, but the style is very typical of anime Sci-Fi. Think: Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Android Netrunner, etc, so expect lots of this...

Spoiler:

Haha yea, but I love those anime, and it isn't completely over the top. I find it tastefully done and with how they blended that style in with Western elements, gives it it's own unique setting. What I was aiming for when I said I wanted a unique setting was something that just doesn't take the 40k grim dark setting and just change a few names to not step on GW's ever so important toes.

Didn't really want a game where when reading the fluff it doesn't essentially start off with:

"In the not quite so grim not 41st millennium, humanity is beset on all sides by the not 40k bad guys. While humanities last line of defense is the not Imperial Guard and the heavily armored space monks who all worship the not Emperor. Where human lives are meaningless and thrown into the not 40k universe fighting endless war. Where not super science humans have not bolter rounds bouce off their armor and your best weapons aren't not chain weapons and not power weapons."

I really just didn't want to play essentially 40k with some changes to make it different. After reading through the Infinity rulebook, it gives me that gritty realistic feel that guns are in fact scary, and that they do what they do in real life... kill things very dead. I build guns for a living for all kinds of hunters, and it is shocking how a small unassuming piece of lead can down an elephant in one shot. Guns in a lot of other games are shown to shoot obnoxiously huge rounds that seem to do very little.

Plus, cover matters. After being an infantryman in the army, you learn real fast that cover matters. I don't know why you would ever stand in the open catching bullets in the chest like an idiot. Sure, you have super heavy armor, I still wouldn't do it though, and I don't understand why any well trained soldier would. Well, obviously, his armor save is better than his cover save, duhhhhh!

I guess I want a slightly more realistic game nowadays.

Edit:

Okay, so it isn't really that I am looking for something realistic, just more credible that said sci fi super weapons are in fact that. Deadly, if the bolter is supposed to be the holy weapon of the Emperor that was used to conquer untold billions of people and planets, why does it feel so underwhelming?

Edit #2:

I apologize, I didn't intend on making an anti 40k rant. It is a fun game for what it is. It is just not what I am looking for anymore.

flames of war was a great change in pace for me, took me to a more board level of strategy gaming from 40k and fantasy, moving companies and platoons around instead of heroic single models and power house units. a tank is a tank and a soldier is a soldier. other that courage and ability to hit the deck. there are far less crazy super natural modifiers in the game .

All the Emperor requires of us guardsmen is that we hold the line, and die fighting. Its what we do best. We die standing.

Yeah, it always makes me laugh in films when the bad guy lets rip with a big assault rifle, and the hero dives behind some corrugated iron, or a wooden table, which is miraculously bulletproof.

Slightly off topic, but there is a PC game called Frozen Synapse which you might really enjoy. It's a top down strategy game, where you control a kind of SWAT team, going into a building. Each turn you have to meticulously plan (down to the second), how each team member is going to move, which directions they are covering, and when someone will break cover. Some of the strategy in the game I think is quite realistic, as you're never 100% sure when the enemy is going to have an angle on you, so you just learn: cover, cover, cover.

It's a fun game and it can get very strategic: covering other units whilst they move, or moving quickly to draw fire, and so unpin your sniping units. Or sometimes, if you can get close enough, you can just charge into an enemy position with a shotgun and blow people away before they have a chance to aim (that's always a thrill). You should check it out, I think you would like it, and Infinity reminds me of it a lot with the all the firing angles and such.

Huh, I will have to check that out! I have been having a blast with XCOM, sounds like that game takes it to the next level.

Also, I have finished reading through the Guild Ball rulebook. I love it.

Oh, does anybody have any experience with the Dark Age Miniatures Game? Hadn't looked at them in a while and their miniatures quality is fantastic now. That seems to be a possibility as well.

I will (of course) tell you to play Battletech.

Massive history, multiple time periods for different flavors of battles, easy to learn.

And more metal miniatures than you know what to do with.

Most things can be picked up on secondary markets for good prices.

Hmm, never really even thought of Battletech. I don't know anyone who plays it near me, and it isn't the style that the guys in my group would even want to paint. I will have to do some looking though, if the rules seem like something I could get them to try it might be a possibility.

I was going to point you to https//:catalystdemos.com, but they are still repairing it from a massive server problem.

As it is, you can check out http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php and see the official forums. Traffic is down slightly at the moment, but there is a Challenges and Gatherings page to help find local people.

And as the Resident Battletech Guru, you can ask me anything you'd like.

I would suggest Dead Man's Hand. Very fun cowboy skirmish game.

Card driven for initiative ( they go in that order) with special rules kept in your 'hand' to do tricksy stuff during the game. Takes the chance off the dice a bit.

What do you think about SAGA? It is almost historical but you haven't have absolutely right colours on your army dresses. You can choose different times - Dark Age or Crusaders. May be you can choose any fantasy army with correct stuff and play with it. They have the army of dead for example. Gripping Beast make metal figures.

So I looked at Battletech, it looks pretty fun. Would anybody have problems with me using arms and weapons from Reapers C.A.V. line to convert weapons at all? And do the Eras matter on the models? I was looking at the official website and saw a lot of different Eras and looks like books that things are from.

I haven't heard of Dead Man's Hand or SAGA, I will have to look those up as well.

For SAGA you even can collect a girl-band with such miniatures like Shieldmaiden, female warlord from Warhansa or this new metall girls from Brother Vinni Shieldmaidens (4 miniatures to make heardguard for example). I'm even use Anima Tactics miniatures to make leaders for armies.

Has Battletech have an interesting game-mechanic? What are the rules? Where I can see them? I saw mec-miniatures and we don't even think to try it, but there is my brother's birthday soon, and I want to buy him any new game.
