Sadly uk law doesn't work that way, unless they can prove he stole the items the worst he will get is handling stolen goods.

Sadly he'll be able to claim that a friend gave him them, he'll never have to say who this 'friend' is but if they cannot prove he was the one to steal them directly he'll be charged with handling stolen goods. Our legal system really is this messed up.
Another recent ploy that some people have been trying is to claim that they thought that they had the owners permission to take the goods, some juries believe them and let them off, or the judge gives them a reduced sentence as 'they didn't realise they were stealing'.
Hope the original poster gets all his stuff back, but to expect anything more than a slap on the wrist for the thief is just wishful thinking.

i have so many other questions
- police actually investigate such things? over in america they say they will look into it but really they don't give a gak
- people broke in and stole a niche sensitive item like models? I would almost certainly start pointing fingers at people i knew
sorry to hear about this though I once put a case under my car to go back inside real quick and came back to find it gone. It was dark so someone just saw me place something down and leave and so stole it because they could. could be a similar sittuation : /

I though his stuff was in a shed. id assume some one was after tools or something and felt like they had to take something to make things worth it.
though im not a criminal or anything.../shifty eye
But yeah in the muricas its honestly better to just get insurance and let them give you money to re try instead of getting back things stolen.
Asides from a very small town situation you basically cannot count on the police. not that its there fault or anything. tooo thinly spread.

I have a feeling people often steal models without knowing what they are. Locked up black cases just screams valuable.

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal |

Guys who break into sheds and try to fence property like that are usually rounders. He's probably a meth or heroin addict.
I can almost guarantee this guy is a low level property rat with previous convictions for break and enter, theft, and possess stolen property (or whatever the UK equivalent of those offences is).

UPDATE: so ladies and gents, after chasing up the police several times I finally got a reply, they have caught the suspect, almost 2 weeks after the tip off was given, they actually did something about it, the person has declined to comment and will likely get away with the crime due to the inept behavior of the officer in charge of the case, I've also been told it's very unlikely I will get any of my property back at this point.
Chain of events:
I received a tip.off that my stolen property was brought into cash converters.
I informed the police, they said they would send an officer immediately to look into it.
A week later I call to ask as to the progress as I have not received the update I was promised.
The officer on the phone informs me that A: nothing was done the week prior and B: the report was filed incorrectly, so can I tell them again.
I was then informed that I would be updated that night, they did indeed call me and told me they had been to cash converters and had a suspect, they would call me later in the week with more info.
2 weeks later, I am informed they basically won't get my property back, even though they have the subject in question, and that he will likely get away with it.
I am now waiting for the case to close, and then suing for mishandling of the case, right from the start it wasn't taken seriously and I have had several officers admit fault via telephone and email, had they acted upon the tip off when they claimed they were going to, the suspect would have been caught with the items on his person, giving the person 3+ weeks is not acceptable.
And there dakka, is the update.

Have you contacted the cash converters place about your property?
Surely they have laws where you are about handling stolen goods? Will they not see some penalty for it?

Darn, that sucks. Depending on what the army's worth, I do hope that you succeed in sueing the police office and getting the money back; if you really want your models back, you'd be better of trying to get...more direct and less legal help, but that usually is more expensive than your army would be worth.
Alternatively, if the police keeps prolonging the whole thing, consider having a talk with the press. They often love stories like these as they engage readers and exploit the general desire of a "The state leaves us alone!" feeling.

Ah dude that sucks. Hopefully you can get some satisfaction in the end.
I had a similar problem with police not following things up, had an accident that wasn't my fault and the other driver did a runner on me, went to the police with the registration number of the vehicle, they said they'd follow it up and never did. Apparently the only thing Australian police are good for is operating speed cameras and mailing out fines for trivial traffic offences.

Thankfully I'm legally trained, so it will cost me almost nothing, a few strongly worded letters to the independent police complaints commission and I should be ok, this is such a clear cut case of mishandling of an investigation they will likely want it over and out the way ASAP.
Sad thing is the more I realize I lost, the higher the tag is going, entire dwarf army is gone, chaos warrior one too etc. It's just adding up and up.
