The most overused Marines army would be Space wolves or if want to keep it codex only whitescars.

Yeah I'd really consider looking into the FW chapters they have some really nice rules and characters.

You would just pick one that seems appropriate. And if you realise later that "hey, this other chapter tactic would actually be a lot better" then it's very easy to just say that's the one my custom chapter is running now.

Red Scorpions have some pretty cool stuff.

I run my Righteous Fists as Imperial Fists (because they're an Imperial Fists successor Chapter), but back in 4th Edition they had their own Chapter Traits.

A lone Fire Warrior went a round of combat against an Imperial Knight and won taking the final HP from it.

Also had a unit of Fire Warriors beat a unit of Striking Scorpions in CC.

Yeah If you are going to make your own chapter just find one with rules you like and then go from there.

Dark Angel, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, or something from the main codex/angels of death. You can make up what ever background you want. Be it a successor chapter or a brand new one.

You should also look at the cursed founding chapters. Unlucky as hell but you could make an interesting story with them. I always wanted to do a Black Dragons army.

Go Imperial Fists or Crimson Fists.

Make up your own! Then you can play them as any Chapter Tactics you want any time.

To be fair this is probably the best advice. It is what a lot of people do, I've done it with mine, you get to choose your own colour and heraldry, your own back story everything. Or you can just paint them a simple colour and give them a standard transfer and be done with it. The world is pretty much your oyster.

A lot of people have fun recreating an existing chapter though so don't discount the option of choosing an existing one. There literally are a thousand to choose from

It really depends how creative you are, or want to be.

My advice if you create your own, is to take your time and think about what colour scheme you want to do, make a few test example and try a few different examples there is a template thing on bolter and chainsword that you can try out your colour scheme on. But nothing beats actually painting it, because you are going to be the one repeating that colour scheme ad nausium. So maybe pick up a couple of second hand space marines somewhere or some of the push fit cheapo space marines for a fiver and try a few different colour schemes out on them.

Creating your own actually sounds like a lot of fun!
