Old friend of mine had some random 40K minis that he got from his Dad (who apparently had a large collection I'd never seen). Among them was one of these:

Thought it was the coolest thing ever.

And then eventually this got me in:

The fenrisian wolves moving with the leaders with wolf claws I saw in a batrep video is what caught my eye. Really liked the way they looked

Not a model, but the CSM 2nd third edition codex was what hooked me for good. (the one with the two black legionnaires on the front)

the old model for asmodai and Ezekiel did it for me. Really disappointed the new models didn't reflect too much of the 2nd edition history.

That's what got me back in after a long hiatus during high school.

The Space Crusade board game hooked me in first, the Chaos Dreadnought was totally cool in an Ed-209 way. I painted all of the minis with Humbrol enamel paints, but I soon moved on to Citadel acrylics! Not my paintjob:

Later on I picked up some Wood Elf Wardancers to act as heroes in my beloved Advanced Heroquest:

Then it was Ragnar Blackmane that inspired my first 40k army; the original version with two banner poles of course!

And the screamer killer inspired a very small Tyranids army (not my paintjob):

And finally, the figure that inspired me to collect some Orks:

I don't tend to start armies because of one model, but so far I've started whole new games because of one model.

I first jumped ship from 40k to Infinity because of the Al Hawwa sniper. She just looked so badass.

I'd had my eye on Malifaux for a long time but I eventually dived in when so much of their range went plastic. The final straw was the plastic Teddy. I've always liked the idea of a huge animated teddy bear that will eat you.

There is not this idea.

40k was these guys.

A couple of dudes with a bolter in each hand, and they looked like they were ready to kick some Imperial butts.

The Heavy Bolter Havoc was a real standout. He had a different backpack from the other Havocs, as well as a bandoleer around his chest and another around the backpack. Not to mention the chain support which really reminds us of the "heavy" in Heavy Bolter.
Spoiler:

For BloodBowl, it was Hack Enslash. What's not to like about a skelly waving a chainsaw over his head?

MGS - know completely what you mean about the Dark Eldar re-release, Just the whole range was stupendous and so cohesive. If I'll be honest, I think quite possibly set the bar for GW both before and since.

Loki - I love that miniature too, probably one of my favourite of the whole Infinity range.

Currently, am collecting West Germans for Team Yankee. What model did it? Wasn't the fearsome Leopard tank, or the Tornado strike aircraft. Rather, the pipsqueak PAH anti tank helicopters. Just love the little dudes

It doesn't matter if you're not dominating the game; if you have 3-4 x as many models and options than the rest of us and you're still getting new kits, we're still gonna rip on the faction. If I had 100 + Drukhari kits all in plastic to choose from, or 100 + Sisters kits, I think I'd be more likely to be receptive to Space Marine player's complaints about anything.

I don't want the best army, just one that isn't an exercise in picking up my models by turn 3.

For my Dark Angels, it was very much the Dark Vengeance set. So much win on those Deathwing/Balthasar/Seraphicus/Turmiel.

Before that, it was Black Templars. Though the plastic upgrades sprues for them were horrendously soft with the detail. (Or they were for me)

Dark Eldar- I had a little force of DE way back in 3rd Ed, but when they got their face-lift in 2010, really got my attention.

Necrons- again, the revamp really caught my eye. Particularly the Finecast Overlord. All things considered, he came out pretty well apart from one of his feet.

Eldar player here.... and the old wraithguard on 3 edition codex along with the old wraithlord did it... I know they aren't really striking models but that was it for me . Immediately after that the falcon gave me the coup de grace .

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...

Brain-Dead Zombie of Nurgle

This was the white dwarf that got me hooked. It was the beginning of the eye of terror GW was pushing from a very excited and creative standpoint. Chaos mutant conversions, plague marines, and the wulfen got me really really excited about the game, and back then GW had a WAY different approach to the game, it was always about painting your dudes and coming up with interesting narratives. I dont remember the other issue I had at the same time as this one, but I remember the Nurgle Daemon Prince really getting me stoked.

Nice Was just reading that battle report the other day actually, in the Space Marine battles book.

That and the full page stories you used to get along with the report, was a real draw!

The old metal Grey Knight Terminator with halberd and Psycannon. Love that mini, and I still do. Don't like the newer looking psycannons, they really are just heavy bolters, and that just isn't cool.

I always loved my Tyranid Warriors. Still use them as the primary force of my Tyranid armies, not that I play anymore...

And most anything from the Battletech universe. Are there some damn ugly minis? Yeah, but that is part of the charm.

I'm just going to let the images speak for themselves. These are just a taste, and I went on to collect most of the ranges each of these examples represent. There are many more that should be here as well, and maybe I'll come back and add more as I think of them...
