It overrides the second paragraph. I see nothing that mentions that tabling your opponent no longer automatically wins the game for you.

cannot correlate their innate inferiority with their inevitable
defeat. It would seem that stupidity is as eternal as war.'

40K has long had a rule saying that you won if you tabled your opponent, regardless of the victory conditions set forth by the scenario. I don't think its such a far-fetched idea that this has been adopted for Age of Sigmar and I don't see anything that overrides the first paragraph of 'Glorious Victory' in any of the Battleplans.
There's issues with that:

For example, the game ending when a player who has more victory points is tabled and the scenario says that when the game ends whichever player has more victory points is the winner. ... And that's not to even go into if a game is tied for victory points, no one is tabled, and they must count points slain to determine minor victory, but must also count models slain to determine minor victory. If I killed more models but my opponent killed more points where do we stand?

Except it does make sense. What doesn't make sense is a general turning to his troops after they've wiped the enemy from the battlefield and saying "I've got some bad news for you guys, but we lost..."

Game ends, the player who tabled his opponent wins a major victory, the player who scored more points wins a major victory, those players are different. Who wins?

I think this is the best explanation of the problem so far

The scenarios dictate what is a major or minor victory and this overrides what the default rules say is a major or minor victory. To not be the case leads to conflicts as posted above.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Actually the general would be saying something more like, "Well men, we could not accomplish what we came here to do. We lost the objectives to our opponent. But we wiped them all out to the last man, so we have that going for us, which is nice..."

"But sir, there's no enemy left! We can just walk over there and take the objective!"

"Sorry son, but with no enemy we have to sit here and twiddle our thumbs..."

I always thought of it as the victors sacrificing their lives to hold the enemy at vital points for long enough for the wider battle (off the table) to be won elsewhere.

"Lord Celestant, while the enemy force has been routed in its entirety such fierce resistance was a ruse; they were able to corrupt the artifacts we sought to recover."

I respect your rules knowledge Ghaz but this one is a bit of a stretch.

Also to note, if you table your opponent before turn 5 but are losing on VPs you can play out your remaining turns to try and secure victory. This is how it was done at Warlords.
