Firstly, pretty much all data has been fixed.
Secondly, it is stuff we do on our free time. Without any compensation. For the community.
Thirdly, if you see an error, feel free to report. We usually react and fix within a day.
Fourthly, if you want to help, you can. But I guess complaining is easier

I lightly poked at the mac and ipad versions. No crashes yet, but then, I’ve not been hammering it.

For whatever reason, it always opens minimized for me, but the old version did that.

Not happy that tac squads for space marines are done on a per-man system these days (like sternguard/vets were/are). There is no need to track each guy like that. Bloats the list, and the output.

I will probably spring for the paid version, but want to see how the transition settles out before paying up.

To be frank I would have no problem paying for the data files provided they were reliable.

And as you said yourself the update blindsided you, I retract my statement about you guys sitting on your hands as you apparently missed the memo about 2.0.

Have a good one dude!

Are people really complaining about paying a few dollars to use a program that makes gaming much easier, when GW charges 50$ for a single book?

I understand if it's buggy but complaining about spending a few dollars in a game that costs thousands to even start? Come on..

Also just to put things in perspective... I wager I've put among the ballpark of 50-60 hours into updating the 4 catalogues I've taken over since 2.0.
That's a significant time investment.

I don't know if there was a memo at all, but, speaking for myself, I've been monitoring the issues popping up for my files and fixed those. Since there was no reason to act, I did not check any other venues like the chatroom we have... So the 2.0 disaster is partly to blame on "us". But I assure you, as soon as I (or we) were knowing what was happening, we scrambled madly to get stuff back asap

Not that there's anything wrong with that... better to air your grievances and hash it out, disliking the situation but understanding the other side's point of view is infinitely preferable to disliking the situation and having your concerns shot down on principle over what some other company does.

Frankly, I hate the subscription model. It only makes sense in a very specific context and the majority of client-side applications like battlescribe that use it should not use it. If it somehow paid for the development of data files I would understand it, if it hosted them and had continuous server costs I would understand it, if your lists existed on a cloud server I would understand it; but the only thing it pays for is the continued development of battlescribe, which a flat cost of the app should be sufficient to do.

That said, the market for the app is somewhat limited. So I guess it really isn't viable to drop the app and release Battlescribe 2: The Sequel and charge a retail price for it. I understand that going to the subscription model was a decision from a set of decisions the dev had to make, it's just not the one I would have picked.

All that is somewhat moot anyway though, since the app itself is actually free. You're paying to shut off the advertising, and so the cost decision you're making is whether that amount is worth it to not have to deal with ads. Frankly, I'd rather pay for the app itself. That's how I personally rationalized buying the pro version before.

So I checked the pricing, and after signing in I got a year's subscription for a reduced price. It's less than I'd be spending on paper for a year of hashing out list ideas so I don't really mind paying the amount itself... it's just that I wish I was buying the app itself with that money, and not just the privilege of being able to use it without advertisements eating up my mobile data limit.

Well, I just clicked "check for new data" and when it finished, every attempt to create a new list (or enter the one I had before new data) resulted in Battlescribe crashing.

So I deleted it and now I have to download data from repositories, and I'm too lazy to go googling, and copy pastaing. GG for now

I guess I'll have to paste my page 1 post here for those joining and complaining of BS dying...

The reason the old version "doesn't work" is that you updated the data files in your old 1.xx version with the v2 data files - which the old links now point to. If you use the old data files, apparently stored on the 2nd link it shows; github, then the old version will work.

Personally, I'll pay the price of a pot of paint a year and use the new shiny version with the latest data files.

I tried dabbling with 40k9/10 again and tried AoS3 - Nice models, naff games, but I'm enjoying HH2 and loving Battletech Classic and Alpha Strike.

Is that all it is? $5 Canadian a year? Not even 50 cents a month, if true well worth it then.

I didn't try to find the way to get it cheaper for being a previous purchaser of pro as I'd previously bought it using my normal email for Desktop and through my google account for my Android. I decided to just get a joint purchase for both on my google account this time.
For Desktop + Android combined for a year, it was £2.99.
In perspective, a single tub of GW paint is £2.55

As much as it irks me to have to update and not have the legacy version available, you don't run around having two versions available. And frankly, the Pro version was cheap enough that it's not a big deal to not have it work anymore. Business models change, it's part of life if someone wants to stay afloat, and a subscription model makes more sense to me than paying for two different versions of pro (PC and mobile).

Just want to point out that you -do- have to pay for two versions, still. You have different licenses for PC and Mobile. I bought the full version on PC last year, and luckily I was given lifetime subscription to the PC version for it (I paid around 25-30 bucks, I can't recall exactly). On mobile, however, I have to buy the new version if I want it.

As of right now, I don't. It doesn't work on my old Galaxy 4, and I can't upgrade right now. So PC only for me, I guess.

BattleScribe 2.0 had a bit of a rocky start, but I think we're doing OK now. There's been a lot of fixes and performance improvements, so make sure you're up to date with the app.

Refresh your data regularly too. The data guys have been updating rapidly.

Release notes

Current versions
- Android: 2.00.12
- iOS: 2.00.07
- Desktop: 2.00.05

Obligatory list of FAQs
- Trouble with 2.0?
- Why has the pricing changed?
- Can I still use 1.15.x?
- My roster is giving incorrect errors!

Hope that helps

Would anyone know if the fortifications data has been moved somewhere? Or has it not made the transition yet?

My android phone had zero issues with battlescribe.

My kindle fire, however, which is what I preferred to use battlescribe on, is 100% broken. I can't find BS on the kindle app store, but I was still able to update it, and now I can't create or edit lists at all.

No fix for kindle that I'm aware of.

They are in the main game file now and not the single data files anymore.

Still crap. Conveniently no longer have my Pro version.
I would have paid more initially. Pro was 6.99USD when I forst paid, and that was supposed to last.

Old battlescribe no longer works for me for 40k rosters. The new one didn't upgrade to pro. The new data is full of errors.

Of course it doesnt since you use the new data files.
You need to redeem your key.
Then report those errors. Or better, help improving the files. There are only so many VOLUNTEERS to do the work.

Lemme think...
Pro has no ADs displayed in the ap. You can create favorites for easier adding of units... and you can rename your units in the roster.
The other is completely free.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh and on the topic of "free":
If you have an old BS License for Desktop, redeeming it gives you a 1000 year subscription.

It did have a rocky start, but it seems to be running better now. I can finally use my phone to draw up quick lists on the fly again.

I was pretty concerned about having paid for pro on desktop when 2.0 first came out, but all those fears evaporated when I got 1000 years of subscription time for redeeming my old key.

The only issue I have with mobile, is that for some reason (maybe because my device is a bit older) the roster is always in the simplest format. No profile summaries, no page references, no weapon descriptions... nothing but the names of the units, the options selected, and maybe the points. It doesn't matter how I change the options in the "view" window. But since I primarily use it to draw up lists so I don't have to do the math, and I usually have the relevant codexes, this is pretty minor.

Well, after my battlescribe started suddenly crashing with an update I posted on Dakka and was referred to this post. I have to say I am very disappointed in what has happened. The app I paid for for the pro version is basically dead. Now I have to pay an annual fee to get the new app!?! The last app was not the best, especially the way the data files were clunky when trying to set up certain armies. It was also horrible when outputting to printer, especially if you had formations. Basically it was unreadable. But it was great that I could take it with me everywhere and run armies in spare time.
I see this new version as nothing more than a cash grab on a poorly run app. Reading the reviews on the app page solidifiesmthat opinion. I am willing to pay for something that functions but this does not and the way this was not communicated and disabled my current PAID FOR APP makes me mad and will push me to other options. Please feel free to let me know what other apps are available. Is army builder on iPad devices yet?

Isn't the subscription fee a mere pittance? If so, I think that I sympathise with the developers.

To me it is more about how they did this and the junk they have come up with. Also....do they pay people who develop their files? What is their reoccurring cost? Don't they make money on the ads for those who don't pay? Reviews on apple from today say it still is slow and worse than the original.

The 1.15 version with the data files for that is still there for your use. Just don't expect us to maintain 2 different version of every file in our free time.

No, data authors do not get paid.

Subscription is completely optional.

If you have an old BS license, you can redeem it for a 1000 year subscription for the desktop version.

The changes are not visible on the surface, but, believe me, they make the app, after a rough start, so much better with things you just couldn't do before. Like Kill Team.
Since 2.0 hit I invested round about... 50 hours in updating the data files. It takes time.

Basically... dont let the door hit you on the way out.

Take your complaints to the guy that owns and runs battlescribe.

I'm a data author because I like to do it, not some customer relations guy. If you invest a significant amount of time for free for the good of others and then get hyperbolic crap for it, you'd be miffed too.
