Thanks EDC, it's a scheme I am familiar with now, so it's fairly straight forward to do, although I do keep trying new techniques to make it look better.

I wonder if we have both offended the dice gods then? I used to roll ok with the same dice, now it's just gone downhill.

I wonder if my house has a curse upon it and only dice which have been blessed can roll decent?

That wouldn't work as I've had my dice fail me epically before.

Evening all,

Got some time in on the CSM squad this week and they are nearing completion:

Have a bunch of highlighting to do, along with eyes and a new effect I'm going to try on the shaft of the staff and one of the shoulders of the squad leader/captain/whatever he is, and given that winter sport has finished for another season, I'm all of a sudden getting more time for hobby stuff again... so I expect these guys will be finished next update!

Had a game against Knightley yesterday as well.

Tyranids (obviously) vs Ultramarines.... that were painted in Grey Knight colours so I got confused when he said no psychic phase haha.

Was Eternal War, Purge the Alien mission (Kill points)

Marines had 10 kill points on offer, I had 11, so fairly even there, however he had terminators, two cent squads etc which were going to be tough for me to melt down to slag with 2+/3++ saves.

It was an awesomely fun game with random stuff happening all over the battlefield, like venomthropes killing bikes in close combat and not dying, and a rhino taking a heck of a lot of punishment from the flying hive tyrant and somehow not dying...

Game ended 10-6 in favour of the marines, I had a flying hive tyrant and a squad of gants left.

Here is a couple of random photos:

Exocrine jumping up to do some AP2 sniping.

And the gant blob versus an assault squad.. this fight lasted almost the whole game

Looking forward to the next game, thanks Knightley!

Hi everyone,

CSM squad is very much done, just need to get the basing finished, so will have some awesome photos next update

Also with Knightley currently working on painting up the Deathwatch Marines from my Overkill game (and doing an awesome job! check out his blog)

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/5160/349329.page

And given that I have just finished my latest paint up, I figured it is time to get started on my Genestealer Cult! Really excited to get into this as Genestealers are the reason I got into 40k and Tyranids in the first place

See you all soon, I'm out of hibernation so getting back into the painting swing!

**There is meant to be photos, but gallery page seems to be having a meltdown and I can't upload any images :( **

Bases on almost finished on the marines, just need to put a bit more paint on them, along with a gloss varnish on the magma/lava parts and the squad will be officially complete!

Also primed up the Purestrain Princelings and Patriach for the genestealer cult, I figure I have good experience painting Nids, so I'll start with the two genestealers as I am going with a different colour scheme to the hive fleet. So they can be "test" models for the scheme

Hmmm, still cant seem to get photos uploading to dakkadakka gallery... sorry team.

I'll try again tomorrow and if no luck then I'll use the other hosting site I've used in the past.

Finally got photos working on DakkaDakka (Yay!)

So here is the most recent WIP shot of the leaders of the squad:

And a group shot of all of them together:

Just working on finishing off the bases with the gravel base and going to be doing a magma effect in the gaps you can see in the current basing, so will have final product pictures in next update!

Meanwhile as mentioned above, it's time to get onto the Genestealer Cult, and I'm starting with these:

How did you do those skulls on the CSM squad? I've got a few skulls to paint and I like how you did those. I'm guessing they're painted bone, nuln oil in the eye sockets then agrax earthshade everywhere?

EDC - Yeah took a 30 brood of Termagants to try out a screen and Tervigon as a troop choice. Would have gone way better if I set up the screen a bit better, Im planning on trying it again in future games because I love the idea of lotsa little guys followed up by the big ones

Snake Tortoise - Black primer, Painted bone white, then a sepia (agrax) wash, and then some light highlighting or drybrushing of dead white. I like how they look as well and it's pretty easy to do.

Tervigons with crushing claws and electroshock grubs seem like decent value, especially if you can get them into a shrouded bubble.

Snake Tortoise - No worries Currently I'm experimenting with Tervigon along with Electroshock Grubs and the Miasma cannon... means she can be a threat from further back with a decent attack and when things get closer there is two templates firing.

Knightley - Thanks boss, they have been glacially slow in getting finished, but that is more time was taken up doing other things, I am happy to say they are almost done so I can move onto other stuff again though!

Hi everyone,

Pleased to say the Chaos Space Marine squad that I've been working on for my brother is all complete.

I am happy with the finished product, and again I tried a few new techniques on top of the stuff I already was comfortable with.

First up was the shaft of the banner staff, I wanted to try and represent some sort of chaotic spirit or power within the staff so did a "big" version of lightning effects, I reckon it looks pretty good and breaks up the squad a bit colour wise.
Second was the shoulder pad and eye slots on the leader and banner bearer, the shoulder pad had some cool detailing in it, so I wanted to get a blue glow effect into the detail, and then carried this onto the eyes of the two minis, because Chaos... again I am happy with how this came out!
Lastly for the new techniques was the lava flowing through the bases, went well although next time I'll do a bit more red base layer before building it up to the yellow

The rest of the paintjob went as expected as I have painted a couple of things for my brother in this scheme before, although I have altered the gold a little this time so it's not as bright and garish.

Anyway, enough prattling here is some photos

Leaders:

Close combat:

Banner and guns:

The whole squad:

What's next you may ask?

Well, Genestealer Cult Codex is dropping in the very near future (I have my copy pre-ordered) and Knightley is painting up the Deathwatch Marines from my Deathwatch Overkill game, so It's time for me to return to the Xenos I love and I'm starting on my Genestealer cult minis!

Starting with the purestrain princelings to practice and test my colour scheme as I have some experience painting up Tyranid models now

Watch this space!

Hi everyone,

It's no secret I love Genestealers, the love started during Milton Bradleys Space Crusade where a genestealer ambush would leave my brothers crying as they saw their marines go down, when I started playing 40k I chose the Tyranids as my army because of genestealers, I started planning a smaller secondary army that was going to be a genestealer cult early last year (got some old school stealers on sprue and picked up some cheap leman russ tanks)... little did I know that they were going to get a full blown codex and official models this year!

I've already purchased the overkill game for the cult models, and Knightley is doing a very fine job painting up the deathwatch, so now I am just waiting to pick up my cult codex (and a pre-ordered rock grinder) and have started working on the models themselves...

To start with I am painting up the two purestrain princeling genestealers from the overkill game to test my colour schemes, and I'm planning on doing the Patriach model next so it can take command and grow the cult!

Here is initial progress shot of the stealers, thus far just base coats and a good wash, but so far the scheme is coming along nicely.

I haven't forgotten about Hive Fleet Ngaro though... have a game this Sunday against Knightley and will be keeping Ngaro models in my painting rotation moving forward

Thanks for checking in.

Heh, thanks.

I wanted to try something different in terms of scheme so I could try out some new techniques, and also planning on having the red skin lightening up through the different generations so they can be seen as one beautiful family

Cult codex arrived today, along with the datacards etc, so it's all on now. With the contents of the Overkill box, the old school stealers I've hoarded, two leman russ tanks and a Goliath on pre order it gives me a nice 1000pt GS Cult army to work on, interspersed with Hive fleet Ngaro modelling.

Looks like it will be a busy hobbying summer

Hi all!

So been a good week for hobbying.

Firstly I have pretty much finished the Purestrain Princelings which were testing out the colour schemes for my cult work, I'm mostly happy with it, and I'm interested to hear what you all think.

Obviously the more "human" the cultists become the skin colours will change a bit and I have plans for the armour/cloth/guns etc on the hybrids and acolytes. I also am still finalising what I want to do to base this army... hence why these aren't based yet.

I've got my cult codex now and it is pretty awesome, I'm going to have fun with this... should be picking up a Goliath this week as well.

Next up is the Patriarch... the cult can't grow without something to create and control it.

Also played a game against Knightley and some Necrons today... will get a mini report and photos up in next few days

Thanks for reading.

Kia Ora,

Just thought I'd stop by and show off a little bit, probably because I'm pretty excited!

Firstly, have picked up a GS Cult Goliath kit. Looks like it is a nice kit, and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to magnetise the truck/rockgrinder variants without too much issue.

Secondly, and even more exciting is I have purchased one of these:

Long term this was the obvious choice for me as I have a lot more models to paint and this will speed up priming/base coats and varnishing... I was chatting to Knightley after our last game and saw he used the same set up, so I figured if it was good enough for him (he paints awesome) then it's good enough for me

I've come to a decision on the bases for my cult army and have almost finished the ones on the purestrains, so should be completed models next update.

Thanks for reading.

Heh, I've had a quick read of the "instruction" manual that came with it... so many interesting translations, so if I run into trouble I will pick your brains on what the issue might be... I kinda need to build some more models before I can do a priming run with it though, and at the moment the hobby time is on painting up a patriach

Evening all,

Well, I have decided on a basing theme for the cult army which is going to be a combination of dirty/slimy water, grey gravel and some crushed rock, depending on what gen the model is and where it normally hangs out.

So the Purestrain Princelings are all done and based with slimy water and gravel as they hide a bit more in the shadows

Next update will be the patriarch as I have already done the base for him as I did it at same time as Stealers to see it working together.

Stay tuned, exciting times ahead!

Update time!

The Patriarch from my Genestealer is on the painting table currently, base coats laid down and ready for washes and highlights.

The lower parts of the base were done at the same time as the Purestrain Princelings to see how they all fit in, and the theme works well. Normally I would base after finishing the paint job

So the big daddy of the cult is coming along nicely!
