I have little knowledge of the Halo IP and have never really partaken in space fleet/combat games but that starter set looks very impressive.

Those smaller UNSC ships are so ugly.. faithful to the original designs mind you but so ugly. The larger ones do look better though. I have no issues with ungainly non-aerodynamic human ships (I did play earth in the B5 fleet game) but soooo ugly! The covie ships though would make good doubles for shaltari ships if I ever wanted to change the scale and play b5 again.

Oh yeah, yup, I'm in.

I like how the 'supported' capital ships get their own profiles.

Whoa man, that set looks fantastic. It looks like the retail price is £80 (£64 at Wayland, which you can get to at the bottom of the article above). Is the USD retail price set / is it being carried on this side of the pond?

And the token sheets are just begging to be "ModCube'd"

Both MM and Warstore have it for pre-order at $112; retail is $140. I couldn't hold out and pre-ordered it yesterday.

Well I had a preorder pending on MM, so I've now transferred that to be for this set instead . Looks like an insane value, compared to Star Wars Armada for instance. I've enjoyed what I've played of that game, but I don't need fully preassembled / prepainted ships, so I feel like I am paying too much for what I get model-wise for it.

I've always wanted to give Firestorm Armada a shot, and this seems like the way to go with a similar ruleset and a setting I'm more familiar with. And the components look fantastic, which is what tipped me over the edge!

Edit: Do we know what size of table is recommended for this game?

The demo table at Salute looked to be 6x4:

There seems to be a real shortage of 6x4 space mat options! Has anyone ever tried these, I've seen a few glowing "text" reviews, but no pics of them out in the wild:

http://somethinggeeky.com/space-gaming-mats/

They seem to at least have a different / more textured backing than normal vinyl mats... I'm interested in these since I've tried standard vinyl mats (Deep Cut studios) and they were just too thin and flimsy for my taste, got creased very easily, did not stay flat, and were extremely reflective... My preferred alternative would have been the 6x4 F.A.T. mat, but it's out of stock in the U.S. (still in stock on the UK/EU branch of the Frontline site, though).

If anyone can find a pic of the Something Geeky mats I linked to above in the wild (really, any mat of theirs of any type!) I would greatly appreciate it . My google-fu has come up empty... this is also being discussed on the Spartan forums with regards to the Halo game, but they haven't come up with any other options (and didn't have the Something Geeky ones listed there). That discussion is here...

Now I am sold lol, will have to see what the finances are like next month.

Any idea how the balance is? According to my brother in law who is a massive halo fan Humanity were out gunned and out numbered. Just wondered if this filters through to the tabletop.

You are /generally/ right. The covenant's strength comes from the numbers and pacts.

Humanity comes from discipline and drill, at the start of the war once the UNSC got their gak together, they started winning ground wars. Harvest is a great example of this for both sides. The ground game was always better for the UNSC however, it was always counteracted by the technology and the superior naval strength of the covenant.

I went through the same problem as you a few months ago looking for a mat for FSA. In the USA, 6x4 quality mats are slim pickins. I settled on waiting around for a F.A.T. mat. Well worth it, but when they restock they only get a handful of the Space theme in at a time. Ping Frontline. They're pretty quick about letting you know when they'll restock. I picked up the 6x4 the last time new stock came in which was the end of May.

UNSC naval vessels were also massively outclassed early in the war, such as at the Fall of Reach. The Covie's numbers were what made the war a losing prospect on top of that.

At first glance, the game looks like it reflects this pretty well balance-wise. The UNSC have nearly twice the numbers of the Covies in the box.

Looks like those expansions are just the same as the starter contents but sold separately, right - none of the new ships (shown earlier in this thread) are available yet?

Yeah, those are just copies of the starter sprues.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Starter is basically a Commander set, and then slightly less than a Core and Heavy for each faction. In other words, actually a bloody good deal!

I plan on getting the starter plus 1 of each add on (minus the commander one).

Should give both fleets a bit of flexibility

Found the 6x4 space mat in stock at a FLGS that is willing to ship it to me (okay, so not that "local", but still!). I've pinged Todd about when they will be back in stock on the Frontline site anyway, just in case anyone else is interested in one (the FLGS only had one).

The only difference is that the Large set has two of the Large sprue instead of the 1 in the Starter. So the starter gets you both Commander boxes(minus a set of d6 and rulebook), both Core sets, and half of each Large set.

So, the commander sets are just tokens and chits and the like? The other packs look like plastic goodness, so if they pass on any savings over buying the main box with its cardboard and dice, I will be very happy.

I also like that I can acquire the plastics at a more leisurely pace and in the factions I choose instead of having to buy them by the starter box or not at all.

Yeah, If you're not interested in the game the expansions are better.

The starter gets you the Command stuff, 1 Core and 1 Heavy sprue per faction, while a Core and Heavy set per faction gets you double the Big ships for about 20%-ish more.

The commander packs also have faction-colored dice..

I love purple, so I'll be buying the Covey commander pack, and the starter, large upgrade, and core upgrade packs

The Starter gives you 2 Core sprues per faction, not 1.

The box contains:

UNSC (32 models)
1 Epoch-class Heavy Carrier
4 Marathon-class Heavy Cruisers
27 Paris-class Frigates
Covenant (17 models)
1 ORS Class Heavy Cruiser
2 CCS Class Battlecruisers
14 SDV Heavy Corvettes

The Core sets contain:

2 x CCS Battlecruisers
12 x SDV Heavy Corvettes

4 x Marathon Heavy Cruisers
24 x Paris Class Frigates

Hmmm... that's tempting to swap to Warstore from Miniature Market. I'd be paying shipping, but that seems like it'd be worth the extra ships.

I had it pre-ordered from Warstore and I'm going to GenCon, so Neal is letting me pick it up there. Of course, I forgot that I got stuck out by the airport this year, so I'm going to have to lug a box around all evening Thursday night, which I planned on being my prime drinking night.

That starter box looks annoyingly nice. The two sides having differently coloured plastic is genius, a real nod towards the boardgames crowd.
