I'm thinkin' of painting my sternguards, but i don't know how to paint the white helmets. i usualy paint the white stuff by drybrushing skull white over a basecoat of ice blue, but i don't think this is going to work with helmets. + I also don't know how to paint the laurels, so they don't look like a three year old painted 'em.
Thanks for any usefull tips provided.

My approach was simplistic, though required a little patience. Several layers of thinned skull white ( about the consistancy of cream ! ) produced a smooth white finish on which I then hit the recesses with thinned blue wash. The laurels, following a tip from a GW staffer, were just the result of a very fine brush and a steady hand.

Produced a reasonable "table quality" result I think.

Hope this helps.

White undercoat, badab black, thinned skull white and leaving black in the recesses..

I like a grittier feel, so I use Astronomican Gray (light, but not white), badab black wash, another coat (leaving the recesses), then highlight with pure white to taste.

I think it's all got to do with the effect you are going for, they all look good, but does it suit the army as a whole? If the armour is yellow for example, you might want to use Gryphonne Sepia to bring the white into synch with the yellow. If you are going for more of a bone look, you might want to use Ogryn flesh. It's best to experiment before making a decision.

I use this and I'm pretty happy with it...

I do white using a watered down Dheneb Stone as a base, then going over with watered skull white until it shines.
