hey,

I am thinking about making a sisters of battle army for my girlfriend. i want to make a friendly army so she doesn't have to use my orks or IG. i was going to go with space marines but i am really sick of painting them and playing against them thou they do inspire me at times. I've looked over the free PDF of the witch hunters and i like the faith system and how they work and was thinking of making an army of them.

my first instinct was to just use marines with IG as stormtroopers but i really want a stronger theme that isnt like oh just marines as count as. If anyone had any ideas of how to do this i would be most grateful.

at the same time i am also thinking of grey knights thou again i would want to convert them, and i'm unsure if there is a cheaper way to do this as well. would it be easier to do grey knights then sisters?

any feedback would be great!

thanks

Grey Knights woudl be easier because it's easier to paint them (fewer miniatures).

Sisters would probably be easier to learn and win with, however.

Both will be expensive all-metal affairs.

thanks for the feedback! i agree with those statements

*shrug* It's impossible to really do a Sisters army without Sisters models. They're the only female Imperial models GW produces. Space Marines "counts as" Sisters is lame, and I wouldn't support it even though it's theoretically possible.

I didn't want to blow a bunch of money on IST when who knows what will happen if the codex gets updated soon, so I ordered some of these a while back to use as counts as:

Looking at the prices for new plastic kits, metal armies are the cheapos of 40k.

The basic idea of 40k is to use models that look like the ones they represent. Using Space Marines counting as Sororitas is like using Eldar counting as Orks, they have almost nothing in common. Using proxies has its limits when nothing fits. Even taking pure bases is better than that.

BTW, pdfs are fine for someone already playing the army, but if you start, you need the modelling and background section as well (plus the omitted rules pages ).

Sisters cost $4 more per pack of ten troops, and you get less in it (in fact, you get one of the worst special weapons combinations in the codex).

To emphasize what I said, here's the store blurbs about the sets:

Also included are a selection of plasma pistols, chainswords and boltguns, and two each of: power swords, thunder hammer and storm shield, wolf claws, plasma guns, storm bolters, power fists. Additionally there are a host of wolf tail talismans, knives and icons to add to your models. Models supplied with 25mm round bases.

This boxed set contains 10 Sisters of Battle and includes 1 Sister Superior, 1 Sister with flamer and Sister with a storm bolter.

Inside a pretty, pretty pain cave... won't you come inside?

GK could be done very, very cheaply if you can convert Assault on Black Reach terminators/marines at all. I'm making a 2500 pt Chaos army of primarily Black Reach pieces for dirt cheap. It would not be hard to convert halberds out of plastic rod and either styrene sheet or blade bits.

Sisters are pretty cool, but to echo what's been said here, there aren't many options for conversion within the GW line. Outside the GW line, there are a few Sisters knockoffs, most notably the Protectorate of Menoth in Privateer Press' Warmachine line. For example, these could be converted to Battle Sisters pretty easily: http://privateerpress.com/files/products/the-protectorate-of-menoth/units/daughters-of-the-flame.png.

The problem is, the knockoffs are as much or more than the Sisters anyway, you have to spend more time converting (albeit, you will have a unique army), and the entire line will not be allowed at official GW tournaments (no outside models).

The rumor is that Sisters will be eventually getting models in plastic, but your guess is as good as mine on when. Grey Knights, however, are rumored to be out in January with a brand new codex and presumably new models.

I can see where you're coming from but I dunno. I think there is something to be said for armor that doesn't make the model look like it should count as having 2 missile launchers.

I don't see the problem using marines for SoB. They both use power armour and they use a majority of the same weaponry. The only real change I might make to marine figures is the head (someone must make female heads that can be used).

Women in modern day forces don't get 'feminised' combat gear, they wear the same as the men.

Another option for a female force is IG. Plenty of figures from different companies to choose from even GW (Necromunda Escher).

Because Marines are not human, whereas Sisters are.

It'd be the same as using Eldar to represent Sisters. Or Tau.

Marines are still human. I have plugs in my ears, and tattoos on my skin. So I have modified my body I am still human.

I have also survived chicken pox, and due to a genetic mutation I am immune to Mono, so you could argue I have also been genetically altered... Still Human.

Marines have been modified they are still human.

You're really comparing pierced ears, tattoos, chicken pox and immunity to Mono to the laundry list of alterations from the Gene-Seed?

Not quite, marines consider themselves to be above Human. This is quite clear in Helsreach as Black Templars often refer to the Imperial guard as Humans.

Consider a tournament.

"Hi, my Space Marine army is a Tau army."
"Hi, my Space Marine army is an Ork amry."
"Hi, my Space Marine army is a WH army."
"Hi, my Space Marine army is a Space Marine army."

Guess, what the problem is

Effectively, you're saying "because red ants and black ants are both ants, that must mean that preying mantises are also ants."

And you are arguing that Ants and Praying Mantis' are from the same genetic stock, and both started life as the same breed of insect.

Nope. I'm saying that they are genetically different NOW, even if they are similar in form (six legs, inesctoid, similar internal organs, etc). A better comparison would probably be bees and ants, as they're both within the same group (Apocrita) but of different species.

Marines, even if they were once human, are no longer. That they were artificially changed from Homo Sapiens Sapiens does not nullify the fact that they were indeed changed.

And my original argument was that Marines are heavily modified humans, which you just reinforced with bigger words.

No I didn't. I stated they aren't humans anymore. Which is what the fluff says, too-- Marines don't think of themselves as human, but as Marines. Marines don't have the genetics of humans, the biology of humans, nor the mindset of humans. They were humans once, but are no more..

However if we get back to the topic at hand.... I think using GS to modify some SM or IG units would be a good bet. As long as modification and sculpting is happening vs using SM as a stand-ins. Unless the aim is to just see if she even likes the army first, and make a purchase decision afterwards. In which case use cardboard stand-ins.
