Got me a Forge World Nurgle Dreanought on sunday and got right to work cleaning it up. Here's the body part so far (click it for a bigger pic)

I showed the death guard fella to show how the armor will look

Base coated it with Army Painter bone primer, and then went back over it with rotting flesh in most parts. The green armor was washed with Thraka green wash, and I'm going for rusted metal on the pipes and chain and stuff. I did that similar to my necrons, with a base coat of Vallejo dark flesh, then splotched on blazing orange and bubonic brown, washed heavily with badab black, then re-splotched the orange and brown, and some light drybrush edging with boltgun metal. The skeleton parts will be white, horny bitz black and hoses & loincloth thingy in red. I'll get to them tomorrow.

I have magnets for the arms, the right arm will have the nurgle heavy bolter or the death guard lascannons depending on how I wanna play him.

Wadaya think so far?

Am I seeing that right? It looks like the occupant tried to climb out the top there.

Thanks, I hope to have the body all finished today, gonna do a thin wash of black to fill in some of the cracks and holes. I also realized I forgot to add the smoke launchers so I'm gonna stick them on too. I think I'm also gonna take some pink and go over the little pimples that are all over it. there's so much detail on this thing it's sick. I'm always finding new little doodads all over the place as I paint.

he's also got some nurglings hanging off him, there's one on top thats tugging at the skeleton. I think I'm gonna paint them a more yellowy color so they stand out more.

Very nice, I think of all the chaos dreads from FW that Nurgle one is easily the best scuplt.

Mine arrived the other day, I've only got as far as trimming off the mahoosive amount of resin flash and filing the mouldings off.

Probably a similar colour scheme but done in a drastically different way.

Been a while, haven't had time to paint lately but I finally set aside a night to get the rest of the body and the legs done. I just need a few little tweaks like the face in the shin armor and painting some of the worms and stuff like the ones on the top skeleton. I'll prolly just make them purple or something. Here's some new pics

I'm gonna force myself to set aside at least 1 night a week to paint stuff. I have way too much stuff piling up collecting dust

I'd love to have the same discipline.. I've got way too many models just waiting to be finished. On-topic: Nice dreadnought. The green is a bit to bright but that's my opinion

Looking good Necros, my only complaint is that the green is a bit bright for Nurgle. But that's more of a personal taste. Keep up the brilliant work!

I was just drooling over this model today. I'm glad to see one getting painted up.

It looks great. I look forward to seeing it finished.

Thanks

I've been thinking the same thing about the green actually. I was thinking about maybe giving the whole thing a light wash with watered down badab black or devlan mud.. but I'm gonna wait till I get it all done and see how it looks first

Not to hijack or anything but it's actually very interesting to see your take on this model seeing as I've just finished one myself (pic in gallery).

How have you got to that green? And if you want to darken it down try a tin wash of Devlan mud. You could also make it look more washed out with a very light drybrush of Rotting Flesh and a wash afterwards just to soften the highlight.

For the green I just used bleached bone as a base coat .. well it was the army painter bone color spray. And then I just did a wash of thraka green and that was pretty much it. I also used the purple wash to go over the pimpley parts, devlan mud on the brass areas. The rusted metal was done with my new rust technique where I do a base coat of dark flesh, then badab black wash, then splotch on vermin brown and blazing orange random all over it, and some boltgun metal splotchy drybrushing for scratches and some edges.

But yeah, I've been using tons of washes for this guy. The way I did my plague marines at first was to use rotting flesh as a base coat and then wash with my own dark brown wash similar to devlan mud, then thraka green after that. but bleached bone and rotting flesh seem to look pretty much the same once you start washing them.

True, they're very close in colour, Rotting Flesh has a very slight greenish tinge. Great work on the rust, I was trying to see how you'd managed it.

Yours came out lookin pretty sweet. I'm trying to decide how I wanna do the banner.. was thinking of making it red like the loincloth thingy but I'm kinda afraid it will just look like a christmas dread. Did you glue the pole in? I was gonna leave mine loose, afraid it's just gonna snap when I play.

I had to use GS and glue because I snipped the end off by accident. Transit shouldn't really be a problem as I don't do any actual gaming. If I did need to move it often I would try pinning it through the feet and legs and also through the torso with one more for the banner.

As for the colour of the banner it depends on the colour of the fly emblem. If it was the same gold as the one on the chest then go for a dirty red, it'll sit well next to the gold and look very striking.

Got some more done, started on the weapons. they're not finished but almost there. I think I'm gonna go with black fading to red at the tips for the claws, and I'm not sold on the heavy bolter arm, the armor plates over the gun part blend in too much with the body, i might just make that part black, and the shoulder part green. Here's new pics

Finally finished I went over the green with some ogryn flesh and that made it nice and sick looking. So the recipe was just bleached bone base coat, thraka green wash, ogryn flesh wash and that's it

Anyway, here's the pics

I love the simplicity of it, a basecoat and a few washes can do wonders on miniatures, but.. the base, is lacking it doesn't really fit in. Everything else is top notch though.

I like the paint job alot , however the only criticism i have is the usage of red on the tabard and the flag. Its drawing most of the attention of the whole piece of those 2 parts , which i feel is a waste considering the nurgly goodness should be the focal point ( which is very well done )

I agree about the base but that's just the way I am with bases, I like to keep them fairly basic because I want the model itself to be the focal point. Plus, all of the bases for my chaos marines look like this, it's like a dirty deathy ashy volcanicy world. I may go back and add some dead grass patches though.

the banner pole is removable. I painted it because it came with the model but the pole is thin flimsy resin, and I know it will just break in a game or 2, so I'll mostly be using it without the banner. I was thinking about using it to make a plague marine standard bearer though.

I do like the red, it contrasts well with the green IMHO...

Also, for the bases, you could maybe add a bit of oily stains, something like pus that would be oozing from the Dread...
