I've been hearing from various sources that Krylon is a very good replacement for GW primer, especially with it only costing 7-8 bucks a can.

What I'm wondering is have any of you used it? If so, is there anything I need to know before picking some up (certain type to use on plastic, etc), or am I pretty much good to go with picking up a black spray primer that says Krylon and going to town?

I justuse grey Krylon primer, and it works perfectly be it on plastic or on metal.

If you're priming plastic use Krylon Fusion. It's available in black, white and colors, some in satin and flat finish. You can fingernail the model after it dries and it won't come off. I can often find the first base color for my army scheme as well and prime with that.

It's one of the most popular brands of spray primer people use for minis. I'm done using Armory since their black is garbage, and I'll be using Krylon soon enough.

Yeah, if you intend to prime plastic go with Krylon Fusion. Though be warned that it's not as "toothy" as primer so make sure you don't get the gloss Fusion or your top layers won't stick.

I find the Krylon Camo colors to be awesome for things like IG tanks or whatnot. The Camo black is ultra-flat so lots of "tooth" and can be put onto plastic without primer. The greens and khaki are also a good color.

Is there a type of Krylon I should AVOID buying? Like one that will melt the plastic or not adhere (if that's even the right term) to plastic, etc?

I use both Krylon and Rustoleum as primers. In addition to the fusion colors, try their camouflage lines. Khaki, Forest Green, and Brown are essential hobby supplies now.

It's also like 2 bucks a can as opposed to 15.

Thats why ive decided to change lol, aslong as the quality is around the same (or better) ill be happy.
Saves me more money to throw away again on models.

I use the Krylon Camo Spray Paint for my base coat since a majority of my models colors are brown to start off. Nice even finish and I know that it will be the same with every can that I buy.

I can't recommend Krylon enough. I've used it in weather ranging from 95F with 95% humidity to below freezing (0F and below) with no problems whatsoever.

if anyone can point me in the direction of a UK stockist of krylon - especially the camo ones (tan in particular) - i would appreciate it as i cant find it locally.

I would like to put in a vote for Duplicolor primer. It is an automotive primer. It comes in black, grey and rust red. I don't know where you can buy it in the US, but in Canada it is easiliy available from Canadian Tire.

I've been using grey Krylon primer on some GW plastics, and I've had no problems even though it is not part of the Fusion line (which I've also used with good results).

What is the problem with Armory black primer? I just bought a can on Saturday to try it out, but haven't used it yet :/.

Krylon camo colors with plasticote technology is the best stuff ever. I've been meaning to do a post example showing GW, Armory, Army Painter, Rustoleum and Krylon camo with plasticote (coat?) for a while. All other brands will easily come off the model with a simple fingernail scratch 24 hours after drying. The Krylon seems to become a part of the model's skin layer, so anything short of an actual metal object will simply not scratch it.

Plus the spray head is beautiful; no other spray paint has a head like that, to my knowledge. No spitting at all, down to the last drop in the can.

I've been out of the wargaming hobby for a while. I'm looking at the Krylon Fusion line's River Rock and Satin River Rock; which would be better used for priming? Other colors include the prefixes flat, glossy, and satin but not River Rock grey.

Just a quick update. I picked up some Krylon Fusion tonight in the black colour. To try it out I sprayed it over an already painted Rhino and I noticed a few things

-it didn't obscure any detail whatsoever
-after about an hour the primer still feels tacky. I can pick it up and no paint comes off, but it still feels kind of wet. Is this normal?
- the primer adheres with a matte texture, which i like. It feels like paint will grab better.
-even though the texture is matte, the look of it is really glossy. is this normal?

Never, ever, EVER use GW primer. Not only is it ridiculously expensive, it's also garbage. The Armory is pretty bad too.

Just realized I picked up the Gloss black primer as opposed to the flat black.

D'oh.

Will this make a difference on my models? I'm gonna go to home depot tomorrow and see if they have the river rock primer, as it will eliminate the base coat for my tanks.

I found some stuff at Walmart that was only 96 cents and it worked pretty well. Granted not as good as the krylon, but still nice finish

Fusion is NOT primer. It's satin or gloss paint or flat (in regards to the camo colors) that does not need to be put over primer on plastic.

Get TRUE Krylon primer. The Fusion will probably work very poorly over existing paint or on metal.

*Fusion over bare plastic.
*Primer (which Fusion is not) over already painted models or metal models.

Gloss paints are harder to paint over as they have less "tooth" than flat paints or satin paints. It's doable but it'll be a nightmare.

Make sure it reads PRIMER. God knows I've searched the whole aisle for that particular can.

Krylon is good stuff. The only GW stuff I've used is what I picked for pennies on the dollar when our LGS closed.

Krylon Fusion is paint designed to bond with plastic. I'm theorizing here, but my guess is that it's the paint equivalent of using something like plastruct cement to bond two pieces together. There is a melt - fuse - solidify cycle.

Primer is...well...primer - adheres to the plastic like any other paint but doesn't actually fuse with it.

You know, I may have to test this theory on a couple BSFP gobbos or something - spray a coat of Fusion on one, let it dry for a couple days, then soak it in Purple Power and see if it scrubs off or if it really truly bonds with the plastic.

Just get the stuff that says "primer" on the can. They have white, grey, black and a dark reddy-brown.

Went to Wal-Mart and picked up some Gray Krylon primer. Gotta say I'm much happier with how it lays down as compared to the black gloss I bought a few nights ago.


For anyone in Canada looking for Krylon, Wal-mart is your best bet. Not only did they have a better selection than Home Depot, Lowes, Rona and Home Hardware, but it was 4.84 a can.

Krylon paint is awesome, I use Krylon or Rustoleum primers and Krylon camo Khaki is the base for my IG Tallarns
edit- I've thought of using the Fusion paint, but most of my models aren't 100% plastic there are metal bits and putty too and I don't know if the Fusion paint will stick well to them. I figure I'm as well off sticking with the conventional primers.
