Well back from the drive from the NOVA open. First things first, the tournament. Overall things were very well run and it was a nice large turnout. The venue was great, the tables and terrain were something to be desrired on the bottom half tables (were I spent most of the day, lol), which was somewhat dissapointing, I think more money spent on terrain rather than prize draws would have been nicer, but thats me (mainly because I didnt win anything from the prize draws lol). I met some really nice people and a bunch of dakkaites. I met dashofpepper, hulksmash (dont think he realized it though), MVBrandt (who was incredibly nice), and Im sure many others I met are on dakka as well but just never linked life to the web. I enjoyed the missions and layout, the sportsmanship scores worked well I think, I do wish they gave us back our painting scores though, since it be nice to know how well I scored. I did see Stelek, but didnt bother introducing myself since he was busy most of the day. Anyways I digress, and onto the bat reps.

Game 1

Game 4 - Overall Game Summary at Bottom of Post

My list:

Fire prism
Fire prism
Nightspinner

-Some after thoughts on my list. I had been building the seer council upto the NOVA and had only play tested it once, so my use of it was really limited. I found the autarch extremely useless, and actually found the seer council much more fragil and much less effective than I had anticipated. It was a major point sink, and it never payed off for me, which was a shame really.

Space Wolves - Tony
Njal
Wolf lord, pf/ss, other stuff
Rune priest, LL, jaws

3 wolf guard, combi meltas, PF
5 wolf scouts, melta

8 grey hunters, everything,

-Thoughts on his list. Well an intersting thing happened at the beggining of the game. We exchanged lists, and when he went to deploy he deployed things that werent on his list. Than I said to him, those arent listed on your list here (all our lists had been handed in and checked off by judges, and the one he handed me was checked off). And I showed him, and he went oh strange, and than grabbed another list, which had different things on it and gave me that list.......So not sure how that happened, and how he had 2 different lists in his "checked off" pile. Im not trying to call him out on anything, since he went on to win the entire NOVA open, but it was very strange way to start game 1 (and I hope this doesnt cause any grief, since he was an incredibly nice opponent and actually my favourite opponent of the day).

Anyways, onto the game.

Mission: DOW, VP primary

I lost the roll off and he went first. He deployed 2 empty rhinos with Njal in one. I deploy nothing.

Turn 1:
He brings grey hunters into both empy rhinos and moves them up midfield. Walks and runs everything else on getting into position.

I bring everything on, going mostly in the right corner to avoid his leftmost long fangs. I bring my dragons on both corners and aim for the laserbacks (since they have nothing else to aim for really). Shooting sees nothing happen.

Turn 2:
He moves his two front most rhinos with njal in one up even further. He moves the wolf lord up towards the council. Long fangs blow off the nightspinner turret, and other shooting sees a shaken storm guardian serpent. No other shooting takes place.

I get fortune off even with Njals 3+ (actually, I get fortune off every turn even with Njals 3+.....which was odd since his dice rolled quite well for the most of the game). Dragons flatout to both corners after laserbacks. I move my storm guardians 12" and get them out hoping to decimate a long fang squad. And the weaponless nightspinner moves flatout. Shooting does not see my wipeout the long fangs from the triple flamer (and pistols), infact, I only killed 2.......he made a ton of 3+ saves here. All my other shooting does nothing, cant do anything on the damage table (all game actually). I multiassault both njals and other grey hunter rhinos. I do nothing to either of them.....cant roll a 6+.

Turn 3:
He gets his wolf scouts in, they come in behind my fire prism, one meltagun shot, one hit, one pen, one explosion. He gets his 5 grey hunters out of the laserback and flame my storm guardians to death (lol 1 flamer wipes my squad, yet 3 wont kill 6 marines). He wrecks my storm guardian transport with the remaining long fangs. All other shooting doesnt do anything spectacular. He gets one squad out of the rhinos I was in assault with and moves the other one away. He assaults my seer council with grey hunters and a wolf lord. Wolf lord on the autarch, and a PF on the farseer. Very drawn out combat that lasts until turn 5, with me basically killing no grey hunters (making lots of 3+ saves) and him wittling down my seer council, cant make re-roll 3+.....

My turn, I blow up both laser backs with dragons. I tank shock his dogs off the board and try and hit the long fangs as well who death or glory and wreck it.......I get 5 DA out and shoot than assault the 5 scouts, I kill 1. He kills 1. Lol.....very dissapointing on my half.

Turn 4-5:
I stopped taking pictures since it was basically game over after turn 3. Poor luck did hit him eventually, I killed 1 grey hunter in seer council combat and he failed morale on both the grey hunters and wolf lord. But saga of majesty saved the grey hunters (no idea who had the majesty.....I guess Njal? because his priest didnt). Anyways, his wolf lord ends up running off the board with full wounds and not killing a single thing in my army. He dumped all 30 marines into the seer council and ends up insta gibbing the farseer eventually, and than making the remaining few models run off the board.

In the end I believe he had 1600 VP to my 1100 or something, a fairly substantial VP win for him.

Great opponent, and enjoyed playing him, as I mentioned earlier he ended up winning the entire NOVA open going 6-0 on both days.

If the dice fell the other way, you could of been talking about a good win!

But in the end, the game shifted in his favor.

Good battle report!

Too bad about the seer council. I've only tried them once and they did very well in the game that I used them, granted my opponent made some solid mistakes.

yea it seems that after looking over his list and the codex, nothing has saga of the majesty.......so that somewhat changes the output of the game as it was 8 grey hunters who would have fallin back.....ah well, good game none the less

Njal has saga of majesty.

As long as he never took an invulnerable save on Njal (because that would imply he upgraded to the runic terminator armor) his list is legal.

Sounds like your opponent had some really good dice going on that game. The problem with seer councils is, they're really just a tarpit unit not an uber cc unit. With some play time on the council, you'll get better. All in all it wasn't a bad game at a convention. And after checking my Wolves codex, Njal has saga of majesty.

And about the two list thing, it's not an uncommon thing to get them mixed up. I've brought two lists that are different to conventions and tournaments, saw what some people are bringing or talking about having brought and decide one list will do better than the other. However I still have both printouts in the same folder, so it's a matter of grabbing from the wrong side of the folder.

Hey Mafty!

Yeah man I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was you. Honestly I don't remember you I remember wanting to go around and look for your army before it started but Friday night I had 2 hours of sleep since thursday morning and saturday morning I'd added a wopping 2 more hours to that total so I wasn't exactly at full capacity

Glad you had a good time. I know I did. Great Batreps!

Not to worry, I didnt formaly introduce myself, but we actually chatted for a couple minutes between games 2 and 3 I believe. I had a green shirt on and beige khaki shorts and was one of few who was no over weight (oh I went there , I actually was joking with some people about that and said Im not in the proper weight class yet)

I would have called him on it. 2 different lists brought to an event? Not cool. Then to bust out a second list not verified by the TO? Bad form (worse form would be if BOTH lists had been checked off by the TO...thats a clear case of intent).
A saving grace would be if his army was set up on a board or display case so that what was used was openly available...if he's pulling the models from a transport case you have no way of knowing if he's tailored 2 lists to 2 play styles (shooty vs assualty) and just pulls the list/models he needs for whatever army type he's facing.

Regardless, and I AM NOT making an accusation, but you should have had a TO over their to review the situation.

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

both lists were checked off, because we had to hand in all 9 army lists into jduges and they check all 9 off. both lists I received from him where checked off, and both were different (although not majorly different, couple units).

He used the second list he gave me for the rest of the day anyways, so it probably was an honest mistake. It was just strange lol. He might have been debating between two lists and had both printed and somehow one slipped into the pile or something, who knows.

Yeah...alot of times it just gets chalked up to 'stuff happens,' but ultimately as long as it was a good time and good games it all evens out in the wash.
