Hi all, I've been thinking about tanks lately, the Baneblade in particular, and I know that there are some Baneblade savvy folks out there that can help clear up some fog for me.

There are a few variations I know of for building a Baneblade: the old White Dwarf issue 132 plans (which I actually built years ago) and a set of plans floating around online for a larger version (I think someone else on Dakka built it a few years ago).

As far as official releases I know of the old Forgeworld version (which I understand is not easy to find as it has been discontinued) and the fairly new GW version.

My question for you all is: what is the most relevant Baneblade (that is to say - the most logical game-playing up-to-date rule-based Baneblade)?
I know the old White Dwarf version, while very nifty, is actually very much different than the other versions, like a 'stunted-growth' version. I was considering building one for kicks, as they are very angular and rigid (a break from the organic stuff I've worked on for a while) but I wanted to get a feel for what version is the most acceptable and popular.

Thank you in advance for your consideration on what may be a somewhat strange question.

i'd say go with the plastic GW one. it's compatible with the stormlord kit so you can later mix and match stuff between the two. it's also the cheapest of the commercially available ones (but obviously still more expensive than a scratchbuild).

Since it is currently Apoc only, build\purchase whatever looks coolest to you and bugger what other people think\say about “official” models.

I agree with the guy above that you should do whatever you want, but I would recommend the plastic kit. It's fully compatible with the Shadowsword kit and is so much easier to build than scratchbuilding.

Thanks for the info - I should point out that I'm completely into scratchbuilding it, in fact that would be preferable, so the sky's the limit.

Silly question: anyone who has the GW kit, how long is the model, from front to back? I can't seem to get a fix on the size of the thing from online pics.

I made the scratchbuild from WD #132 and now have the plastic kit. The first prodction model of the Baneblade was from Armorcast and appear to have used the WD plans exactly.

The current plastic kit is the most up to date and rules-legal one, but I have to say that unless you scratchbuild one that is grossly under size then no one would complain whatever it looked like.

The Baneblade built for the GD Battle of Big Toof River display some years ago, long before the resin/plastic kit and way after the scratchbuild plans in #132, was much larger than either of them.

the GW kit is about 9 1/2" long... from the oil tanks in the back to the front of the treads.

I highly recommend the plastic one as opposed to the FW one simply because FW resin is a pain the arse to work with and isn't the greatest resin ever by far. Especially as you can now buy titan weapons separately and convert them nicely enough or buy the resin/plastic combo arkurion patterns. If you have to have FW go for that version because less FW resin = less issues with resin that has shrinked/warped etc. I really wish FW used better resin.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Wow! You are all being great: This information is of paramount interest to me, I'm fascinated by the variations - thank you all for being specific as to the details.

I have interest in building based on this guy's plans:

(perhaps you have seen these plans, perhaps the creator is even a Dakka' member)

They seem to closely resemble the old FW version, but of course they are radically different from the WD#132 plans, so for me it's a toss up between the old-style WD plans (which would be a smaller tank) or the newer plans available from the link above (a larger tank and most likely more in proportion with the commonly available kits).
