Yesterday at in nightclass, I got this email from my building....



I got back last night, and found out the guy had jumped from the 18th story main staircase window....where he landed the garden was smashed and there were broken tree branches that he had snapped on his way down....really, really horrible...

I was weirded out all last night...

...say a prayer or something, you know?

Damn what a way to go. Thats weird though, Ive never got a letter like that before when we lived in apartments. Shoot Id be weirded out too. Ill say something I guess

well the building I live in is pretty upscale, but even that...I don't know...

there have been cops in and out.....


see if there was foul play involved it would be even creepier....

I'd be freaked out, too. I would say something, also. A quick prayer, maybe think about thoughts. Honestly, I have no idea.

it's bad enough my hallways look, and building resembles, Dana's apartment in Ghostbusters, now this....

Suicides are up among high-pressure occupations, mostly army recruiters and border guards. Opportunities are down, money is scarce. Taking a hard look at the future is just too much for some people. Add to that, there are a few prescription drugs that list suicidal feelings among there side effects and it's surprising there are not more suicides. It seems like it's more important than ever to focus on the positive, because to do anything else is too dangerous.

Man who hasnt been to a bad place in their life. Imo people need to just power through like alot of us have had too

I have had the same thought process, but my mom brought up a pretty good point; some people don't have ways to cope, some people don't have anybody to talk to, or don't have family, or don't know where to turn for help...

I can see the humor, but it's kind of in bad taste, not for you of course, I would have said something similar if I was detached from the situation...but I dunno, doesn't seem quite right.

There's nothing really you can do about it besides aid the investigation if you can. Just don't let it freak you out too much. It's a shame that stuff like that happens, if they just had some way of taking their mind off of all the negatives they'd probably find an easy way to turn it around or something and move on. Can't have the positives without the negatives.

Firstly, I never had anyone to talk to. But I had a reason to keep going. I was a father to be (now am a father of two). Surely people have family or atleast somone who they think about. To me Suicide is a way of saying to your loved ones. "F*** YOU! Your not worth me living"
Its basicly a way of shafting people. Who wants to do that to someone, Its cold. Suicidals just dont care about anyone but themselves. Self Centred f***s

I guess the thing that weirds me out is what my imagination does with the situation. What sound did he make? How loud was the tree branch snapping? How did he land? What were his thoughts on his way down?

Not to mention I was at the same open air "window" from the staircase taking a picture, not a week beforehand,



it's not the suicide that weirds me out, it's the fact that somebody, anybody, died so close to me. I probably have talked to the guy as well, they still havn't released his id.

suicide was always a strange topic for me, just seemed kind of unreal that someone would do that... a relative of mine died by jumping right in front of a train in a subway.

I know what you're saying, but the truth is that the majority of people who commit suicide have some kind of mental illness. I don't think it's often as simple as not caring about anyone but themselves.

It wouldn't be called a mental illness if the majority of people acted on it. The only difference between weird and normal is a majority vote.

I've spent the night in the psych ward for attempting suicide. The "just power through it" approach only does so much til you run out of power. It's really not as black and white as you think, though self confidence makes a world of difference. When you're at that point, obviously no one else matters. It's damn hard to even try it too. I don't want to say I respect someone because they do it , but it takes a bigger pair than most of the miserable people out there have. Controversy aside, it's their call.

I remember in Middle School we had a boy accidently commit suicide via flatlining. I thought it was rather humorous; so many people fail when trying to off themselves, and Robert managed to do it on accident.

I was sitting at the local library a few days ago, when a woman shot herself in the face less than ten feet away from me. She was with her two children, even. I can't imagine why someone would want to kill herself in a library, but that sort of thing just tends to ruin your day in all sorts of ways.

I'm surprised it's not a more commonplace occurance over there, though, seeing as how you live in Seattle.

The people that do that kind of thing just tick me off more than anything. First, if you have kids, coming with you to your death no less, you'd think you could try your hardest to pull yourself together for a while longer, just for them. Second, why be a massive bastard your last moment, if you *must* kill yourself, do something quiet and quick, don't go out in public and spray yourself on a bunch of innocent people, who are now possibly all screwed up thanks to your stupid choice.

Was the second part of your post directed at me or the person I quoted? Because I never said anything to even imply that I was advocating the "just power through it" approach.

As to the first part, I didn't mean that the act of committing suicide itself was the mental illness, but rather that the majority of people who commit suicide have some other form of mental illness (it could be a variety of things) that contributes to them actually committing suicide.

Well, Washington, Per capita, has the highest suicide rate in the union by far, so I'm just surprised that you're not more desensitized to it by now.

Being desensitized by stories in the news that happen in my city is on thing; seeing the snapped tree branches, the washed and scrubbed wall where he splattered, and the police line tape every day as I walk out of my building is another. If you expect me to be desensitized to something like that, then I don't know what to tell you. I think it's awful.

Agreed, sorry to hear about all this mate. It's sad no matter which way you look at it.

Maybe a holiday away from home is in order if finances/situation permits?

Anyhow, positive, good thoughts to all involved, as it must be a trying time.

Wow that sucks. Imagine how long it will take for those plants to recover from the trauma of having their limbs broken.

With enough exposure, the human mind can become desensitized to literally anything. It's a great survival mechanism that we've developed, but it is often twisted to suit other purposes.

At least be thankful that you don't have to step over his corpse as you walk out the door.
