Grey Knight Purgator firing around corners

Hey folks,

(Yes it's another Marine thread )

Just been on a bit of a spree and have bought myself a Marine Battleforce and Command Squad, also picked up Sevrin Roth's kit, the Red Scorps veteran upgrade kit and a load of RS shoulderpads from Forge World. It's mainly a project to do at the moment while I'm on some down time, but when I get back to civilisation, I'm planning on taking it with me and getting some games involved. I'll be picking up IA8 and a new codex, I've only got the 4th ed SM book, further down the line, but afaik, the only main difference with the Scorps is the Apothercaries trading in for Sargeants. Which to me, sounds awesome, that and the gorgeous kit for Roth.

I had originally planned on building up a Blood Ravens army, so I've got a few odds and ends kicking about from many years ago, a lot of Macragge and AoBR marines, which are decidedly unawesome, but they were cheap, so can't complain. I've also picked up a couple of old (3rd edition?) dreadnaughts, the mean solid pewter fellas, and they've both got assault cannons and dccws. So I got to thinking about a list for the army, and FNP on tac marines suggests getting a bit assaulty, or running gunline and outshooting with potentially stronger(tougher) troops.

Looking to build the army up to 1500, maybe 1850 eventually, so here's what I own, and what I'm thinking of doing:

Own:
1x SM Captain
1x Command Squad
1x Roth+HG
~30x Tac Marines, with Flamers, Meltas, Missiles, Sarges etc
5x Scouts
5x Assault Marines
2x Dreadnaughts
1x Rhino

Obviously, I'm going to need some more transports at a later date, possibly swapping the Rhino out for a couple of Razorbacks maybe even drop pods and maybe adding a LR/Predator depending which is more cost effective these days.List wise, I'm thinking something like this, I'm not too clued up on the latest book, so some things here may be incorrect, by all means correct me

HQ:
Libby+Honour Guard
10x Tac Marines, Flamer+Missile/MM, Apothecary, Transport
10x Tac Marines, Flamer+Missile/MM, Apothecary, Transport
5x Scouts, possibly with Telion (if this is doable, I like the notion of picking off specific models...unless i read something wrong about him.)
Unit of Sternguard, I hear they're rather killy.
2x Dreadnaughts, I'm thinking on buying some different arms for em if they're compatible, possibly also with drop pods.
Land Raider for.. soemthing, maybe some assault termies
..asssault termies!

I'll admit I should really get a proper look at the codex, but if I can get an idea for an army together, it'll make future purchases much simpler.

Cheers for reading!

Edit: Just won a Tech Marine and another Apothecary offa eBay, bonus.

Red Scorpions really hate mutants, so having a librarian in the army would not be very fluffly.

A veteran of centuries of battle, Sevrin Loth is one of the most potent battle-psykers in the entire history of the Red Scorpions Chapter. Across the breadth of the Imperium there are few able to match his destructive psychic powers and as Magister, or Chief Librarian of the Red Scorpions, Loth serves as one of the Chapter Master’s most trusted advisors.

Half of the reason I wanted to get this army together is because I have to own that kit
The other half is that I bought a load of stuff as listed above, that I haven't done much with yet. I've not been so enthused about the hobby for a while, until now

Edit: They're mentioned loosly in IA4 and recently more detail in IA8... big in the Badab War. I think it's IA8 that mentioned the Apoth swap for Sarge's, I'll have to figure that out... I didn't really plan this out too well really!

Whoa, sorry about that, I just assumed they didn't like psykers since they already didn't like mutants. Guess I was wrong :/

No biggy mate, you're right enough about the mutants, but that just covers folk like Ogryns and Ratlings. Psykers are fine, so long as they don't grow an extra finger or something

just as an aside, those red scorpion kits are fantastic!!

No ideas?

Just lookin for an assault themed list and a gunline list, any suggestions?
Edit: Also ideally taking a libby for an HQ choice and swapping Tac Marine Sarge's out for Apothecaries.

the imperium (notably the ordos) are well known for their hypocrisy regarding psykers, but that's really just biting the hand =P, so you're within your rights to make that assumption =D

Been thinking a bit more about these guys, how effective would 9 Marines+Apothecary, Flamer+ML would be if they split to combat squads, had the ML say sitting on an objective throwing missiles around and taking the flamer and apothecary off for assaults?

Or would they be better sticking together?

Comments, opinions, suggestions... all welcome!

What codex are you using? Codex: Spacemarine doesn't have any units that include apothecaries other than the command squad. Unless you if you mean sargeant when you say apothecary.

Regarding your question, it is a bad idea to split your squads as they aren't as survivable than if they were 10 man strong. Hope this helps

I am guessing it is in IA8 (like he mentioned) and is a special rule for Red Scorpions. A special rule existed like that in the 4th ed SM Codex for chapters that feared mutation so much among their battle brothers that they could upgrade sergeants to apothecaries to help safeguard the geneseed. I am guessing that is what its based off of. OF course apothecaries sucked in 4th ed, and now give the squad FNP, so it seems far less balanced now.

That's exactly it Magister.

Still looking for a rough list if anyone can suggest one?

Edit: I've no idea of the points cost on this list, but its something to work with at least!

HQ:
Liiby: Sevrin Roth + Honour Guard

Troops:
9x Marines, Apoth, Flamer+ML, Rhino+EA
9x Marines, Apoth, Flamer+ML, Rhino+EA
9x Assault Marines, Sarge+PF, Drop Pod

Elites(could use some tips on these guys especially):
Sterguard? Unit size and gear? transport?
maybe a 2 units of Termies/Assault Termies?

Heavy:
Dread, AC, DCCW, Drop Pod
Dread, AC, DCCW, Drop Pod
5x Devastator, with PC and MLs maybe?

Here's the notion:
Marines roll up, get near/on objectives and offer light dakka and some anti horde/light armour with ML.
Drop pods down on turn 2, Assault Marines get into assault to help with tougher units.
Sternguard, Devs and Dreads offering fire support (I'm probably going to get alternate arms for the dreads ata later date, most likely some Las or MLs).
Would better shooty Dreads be more useful and/or swapping out some termies for Assaulty termies?
Also if there's any errors in the list, like someone can't take something, then please correct me. Can only get on here at work, and I've not got access to a codex here.

Thanks

Drop Pods follow special rules, and 1/2 MUST arrive on the first turn and the other 1/2 rolled like normal deepstrikers.
I would suggest, for your elites, 3 squads of 6 Sternguards, each with 3xCombi-Melta and 3xCombi-Flamer all with Drop Pods.
This will let you drop one Sternguard first turn with both dreads, and then the other two wherever you need them most. With access to flamers/meltas and special issue ammo, they can handle most things and the whole unit is only 240 points each (which I think is acceptable for an elite unit with a pod).
If you do this, I would also recommend dropping the AC's from the Dreads and going with the Multi-Melta/Heavy Flamer Combo OR upgrading them to Ironclad's.

Even if you don't make these changes, Assault marines aren't troop choices for normal marine chapters (only BA Codex based chapters) and shouldn't take a drop pod. You can't assault the turn you land in a pod. Make them another Tac squad in a rhino, or just have them have jump packs or a rhino (but again, they aren't troops and aren't scoring).

You know, I don't know how I missed it before, but for a Codex: SM army Dreads are Elites unless you have a Master of the Forge HQ. I don't know if Red Scorps have their own Force Organization, but you probably have to switch your HS options around.

I would go:
Ironclad Dread w/HF & MG, Pod 180
Dread w/MM & HF, EA, Pod 165
8x Sternguard 4xCombi Melta, 2x Combi-Flamer, 2xCombi-Plasma, Pod -275

for your elites. Drop the dreads first turn against heavy infantry lists, Stern + MM dread against armored.

HS I would just rock Preds or Vindi's depending on what you have. I would strongly suggest taking at least 2 Vindi's if you take any, or else they will probably targeted first. Something like
Tankbuster Pred -145
2x Vindi w/EA, Siege Shield -135 each

or something along those lines.

Yeah, I've not played SM before, so I was just guessing really. I've got a copy of the codex in the post, so I'll hopefully get a proper list sorted out soon.

There's a post in N&R with the bonuses the RS characters offer, if i'm set on having the apothecaries, i'd have to swap out Roth for Culln, as he's the one offering them. Besides that option, I'm sure they're just vanilla.

But it's still a while before I'll have the army together and get a game with them as I said. Just needing a notion on where to go next month with some money

I've got the Marines covered, I'll probably stick with Roth + HG for a while anyway. Couple boxes of Sterguard, new weapons for the dreads and a vindi should do next month.

Thanks again mate

I have to admit I'm very curious about this thread as I am planning on starting a Red Scorpion force and I haven't played Marines in a very long time.

Besides getting Apothecaries instead of sergeants their Scouts are not as good, but that doesn't seem to matter much. Just a tidbit for those who don't know much about the awesome chapter that is Red Scorpions.

So if you are focusing on getting the most out of FNP I would think gunline is best, it seems more lists have power weapons then have AP 1-2 weapons that they are going to use on your marines. Problem with splitting your units is only one of the combat squads gets the FNP. Perhaps then having anti-mech vehicles and having your squads lay down massive anti-infantry fire. Not sure. I also hardly play against Marines.

I'm not sure how I'm going with my list either but yeah that Librarian is a huge part of getting this force.

To get those three pods in at the end of turn one Id add 2 more pods to the list somewhere - the devestator unit for example. With 5 pods in the list you can deploy 3 units turn one and hold the other 2 back EMPTY. Deploy the owning units of these 2 empty drop pods normally. A Dakka Dread and a unit of Devestators would be solid choices as you would want them to be shooting and dont really care if their Drop Pods ever arrive. In KP missions you actually dont want them to show up.

A man's character is his fate.

Kaiser, that idea is sickeningly cheap. I love it.
Not sure I wanna drop over what... £150 on drop pods though!

HS choices I'll probably take some small blast spam Devs, with either loads ML or some Plasma. Couple of Predators as well, one anti armour, one anti infantry. Still, I'm a while away from having a full army, I'm still taking mold lines off my battleforce, only got 2 marines put together so far!

Magister Sevrin Loth is describe in Imperial Armour vol. 9 Badab War part 1. Also part of book is Lord Command Cullin, as he was in charge of the loyalists space marines during the Badab war. The Chapter Master version.
