There was a lot of terrain for as many vehicles as they had. Each of the four quarters had a bunker style, 6" by 4" box about 5" from center.
Set up for the mission was bases, table quarters.
IG win the roll off. Basilisks placed in the corner with all the chimeras ready to roll out in front. Lemon russ guards center of the table with a clear line down the middle. Bane wolfs hide behind the Land raiders, storm troopers held in reserve with inquisitor, vindicare prepares to infiltrate.
Tau lines up the broadsides for down the table shots, fire warriors preparing to hold the base objective. other fire warrior squad in transport held in reserve. pathfinder team is placed in the middleof the quarter awaiting their scout move. Tau
hq is placed to cover everyone with the
ld bubble. Crisis suits held in reserve. Space wolf rhinos deploy left flank to keep the vindicare from infiltrating to a nasty position in a ruin. Thunderwolves line up across the forward line preparing for death or glory (actually happens!)
Vindicare assassin infiltrates, not terribly important as the good places were within 18'', good strategy notice on my part. pathfinder team scout moves, turbo boosting and landing on a flat spot on a hill.
First turn, Land raiders move up 12, chimeras behind, banewolfs pass up the land raider in a sprint around the outside. Vindicare takes first shot of the game and take s out the pathfinders transport, they dive out into the cover of the hillside. Basilisk, Lemon russ, land raiders all open fire on the thunderwolves, doing a few wounds, but nothing removed, (maybe one fenrisian). Bottom of turn on, there is a clear line of sight to the lemon russ and two of the broadsides blow it to smitherines. thunderwolves charge forward, moving over terrain, bloodthirsty, and fleeting, then assualting what was to me the left most landraider, only three models make it into base, thunderhammer, 2
PF, hitting on sixes is painful, but they try! grand total result, can't shoot, but I did get an extra 12" of movement
Turn 2, Land raider with grey knights thinks it's going to tank shock my thunderwolves, the
PF from the squad is in the way, and having been wounded from the first turn Death or glorys! Single attack auto hit, 6 to pen, 6 on the damage chart, 6 inch explosion! Glory be to the thunderwolves! This was the most exciting moment of my day haha. Killed off 2 grey hunters inside, no wounds to my cavalry that were close. This leaves room for chimeras and bane wolfs to shoot the crap outta my wolves. The other land raider drops the termis out the front and the shooting commences. Basalisk target my rhino blowing it to smitherings, leaving 4 men standing, other basalisk kills fire warriors holding the objective. Vindicare snipes wolf guard battle leader to death. 2x melta taxi, and a plasma taxi and their chimeras rip into my wolves after the banewolfs tears up a few fenrisians and random wounds (they were amazing for the way I was lined up because of the assualt move.) Grey knights and termis shoot into them as well as the remaining land raider. By the end of the shooting, all but one fenrisian wolf is dead, and naked thunderwolf and his buddy melta died. Lost a battle leader. Most everyone has taken a wound at this point. Termies and grey knights assualt my wolves, grand master going at the same time as my wolf. Grand master does one wound, saved on the storm sheild, wolf epicly takes out two terminators! Gotta love getting the countercharge. Grey knights and my stormshield wolves get to go at the same time as the rest of the termis. grey knights fail to do any wounds due to storm shield and belt of russ saves. Termis kill off another thunderwolf that strikes back as he dies taking the termi with him. My angry wolf leader kills half the squad of grey knights, the power fist from the thunderwolves finishing the last two. The other wolf lord takes out a termi or two, leaving only two and the grand master. After fearless saves the grand master has a single wound left an no terminators with him.
Bottom of two, Land raider gets popped by the broadsides, in assualt the thunderwolves finish off the grand master, not before he takes out a wolf lord and his fenrisian, spreading out for consolidation to minimize damage from templates. Suites come deep striking in, and the marker lit vindicare gets taken out by a single double toughness wound that makes it through.
Top of three, Baneblades make a run for our base, templating tau commander and drones, leaving her with two wounds and a single drone. basalisk takes out the rhino near the tau commander and explodes! killing a grey hunter, tau commander takes a wound and a drone goes down. Thunderwolves take fire from the chimeras, one parking on top of a building like it was nothing in order to get line of sight. Mr. Angry,
PF and two storm shields are all down to their last wound, and only Mr. Angry has the saves to keep going, the other three falling to massed fire.
Bottom of three, plasma taxi falls to suit fire, banewolf #1 becomes a shell, the other exploding, broadsides and rail rifles tearing them apart. My lone grey hunter
PF charges the hulk of the banewolf seeking vengence for his buddies that were burned alive. Mr angry assualts into plasma vets eating them and consilidating behind terrain. Fire warriors from reserve barely move on table in their transport.
Top of four, storm troopers come in trying to shoot at mr angry, and he saves like a champ. plasma taxi and two melta squads shoot at the suits after the basilisks have their shots, only drones fall, and one suit takes a wound.
Bottom of four, Mr angry eats storm troopers for lunch while the suits take out a melta taxi, now with
IG on foot, Mr angry consolidates back into hiding from flashlight fire. Broadsides do nothing and other firewarrior drop in on our objective to reinforce, with their transport empty turbo boosting for the contest. Lone power fister from the grey hunter squad re assualts the banewolf hulk, this time wrecking it for good.
Top of five, plasma vets shoot everything they have into Mr. Angry, making him save 3 4+ invulns and 2 2+ saves. Melta and plasma into the suits taking out more drones.
Bottom of five, Mr. Angry eats yet another squad! Plasma vets are tasty after all. He consolidates towards basilisk wanting something crunchy to eat. Suits combined with pathfinders and gun drones take out the
HQ squad running around (one of the melta squads) Broadsides take out a pesky chimera.
The game ends with 1 objective each, so defaulting to kill points. Thunderwolves and Tau take the Massacre, 8 to 17!
Overall I am very happy with my thunderwolf cavalry. They stood up to twice their army points shooting at them and still killed more than their point value. My troops really didn't do much this game, I think I could have used them much more effectively, the rhino s at least to block a driving lane for the bane wolf s that hurt so much.
