27/04/2013 - painting (but not basing) of infantry completed.

10/04/2013 - All construction completed now.

08/04/2013 - This project has been on hold for two years, during which time I've built and painted a 5K points Raven Guard army (that I really ought to take some nice pics of).

Sixth edition has prompted a dusting-off of it and it's back with a couple of minor list tweaks, most notably the addition of two Vultures with TL Punishers cannons - now terrific light vehicle hunters thanks to hull points. Almost everything is built now (new photos below), just one more vulture to build. Then all I need is a bit of decent weather to do some priming and painting will kick off!

05/11/2010 - This is a 2K army I'm building using the IA8 Drop Guard list.

I'll update the list with photos as we go.

looking very nice. I like the stormtroopers so far. Curious how you are going to paint them. Big up.

I'm liking the Valkyrie. It really looks like it needs some Techpriest love. The veterans area little brown for my liking, but probably more realistic than any alternative for a unit of field infantry Nice kit bashing on the stormies too. Where are the suppressors from?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Stormies are going to be painted pretty much the same as the other infantry.

Looking ace so far, Scott! Can't wait for more.

+ Edit + After a closer inspection, that Valk is... mouthwateringly cool. You need to show me how to Sponge-Weather some time, because that... that's just fantastic!

Dip sponge in paint - apply to model. That's about it.

Use a bit of scrubby sponge (washing up sponge), dip it in the paint pot and then dab it on a tissue until you're getting little spots rather than a big blob. Attack the parts of the model that would get most bumped and scraped and all the areas that the crew would touch or walk on.

The sheer number of mortar shells you will be lobbing around would be awesome in a filmy way, but it has anti-armour problems. For AI you're fine, just a tank heavy army would worry me a bit. Replace a Valk with a Vendetta? (I may have missed some units during my read through, so if you have a Ven in there I apologise )

Storm troopers look incredible, heads from Valk crew, and where did the silencer things for the weapons come from?

Keep up the good work!

I don't play as much as I could. I blame society! And ninjas

Wehrkind: "Nah, see he yells the order, and when everyone looks at him and say "What?" he grabs the vox, hits a guy with it and screams "CAN YOU HEAR MY NOW?!" into the mouth piece. Works like a charm "

Funny thing to do on L4D [if you own the server] Bind the tank music to a key, then at quiet moments press it and start firing like mad at something behind your team whilst screaming 'tank' on voice comms.

Thanks for the comments guys.

The barrel jackets on the hotshots are from SM scout sniper rifles.

For anti-tank I have 2xVendettas, 2xMultiMelta drop sentinels, 2x triple melta vet squads, double melta storm trooper squad and the Thunderbolt. (and, of course, the demo charges on the three cyclops don't halve their strength against armour)

Within the limitations of the list (only one special in PCS and CCS and no armour of any kind) I think that's okay.

That weathering is just to die for... guess I have to go sponge-hunting. Good gawd, that's sexy. Or, well.... not sexy... or really beautiful, technically. Which is awesome

PS. Oh Oh Oh! Those converted SM Scouts to Stormtroopers is frickin' kickass aswell! That head though.... don't recognize it from anywhere. Looks GW-made, unlike the Pig Irons...

Cyclops operators are assembled. The vox casters have been substantially streamlined to make them distinct. (and there's no normal vox's in the army anyway)

Just love the paint scheme and the weathering on those vehicles, would you mind letting us know how you achieved it? I'd love to take a shot at it, not that I think it'd come out as well, but still, lovely.

Almost everything is built now (new photos below), just one more vulture to build. Then all I need is a bit of decent weather to do some priming and painting will kick off!

The other problem is that the paints I've been using are all now discontinued. I did stock up on key colours (Khemri, Calthan and Devlan for my IG & Charadon and Badab for my Ravens) but I am concerned that I'm going to run out of Khemri before I'm done. I have Baneblade brown and vallejo heavy brown to try but neither is an exact match. I've also had to switch to vallejo heavy charcoal as my sponge weathering colour - charadon is better but needs to be hoarded for my ravens. As far as washes go, army painter has really good substitutes for badab and devlan.

Newly built models:

Lord Commissar with and without. Power Weapon (bolt pistol barrel needs drilling)

2x Drop Sentinels w. Multimeltas. I was going to get more of these but am now glad I didn't. For some reason they come with the old (legs not pose-able) sentinel plastics. I was not impressed with that.

Getting some variety into these was annoying. The HWT kits have very little variety in terms of the guys. Almost as boring building these as constructing six drop pods.

Minimal weathering on the Cyclopses - just water marks and rust on the exhausts. I figure that they're not going to spend enough time exposed to the elements between being taken out of storage and being blown up to get weathered!

I've had a few questions about how I paint my tanks so here's a walkthrough. (the images in the gallery are pretty hi-res for those that like to zoom in)

Starting with a primed model I drybrush the main colour on, making sure to keep the brush strokes in the same direction as the watermarks (i.e. down). Smooth surfaces (especially resin) may need more than one application.

Decals go on in the next step with lots of microsol to break up the edges.

Then, to add some tone and depth, I use a fine ink on all of the panel lines, rivets, etc. I'm using Mig Brown Wash here.

Sponge weathering comes next. Just take a piece of washing-up sponge, dip it in paint (vallejo heavy charcoal here), dab it on tissue until you're getting fine spots and then apply to the model, concentrating on high-wear areas.

You can see that the sentinel on the left has blobs that are slightly too large.

Given that these are drop sentinels I've put additional wear on the front center armour.

Next I add all of the small details. I do these after the sponge weathering because lots of these details shouldn't be weathered like that (rubber hoses, hydraulics, unpainted metal, glass lenses, etc aren't going to chip).

Also, I've used Mig Oil and Grease Effects on the leg pistons (just the bottom of the piston because the upper part will be wiped clean as it moves) and ankle joint. It's pretty good stuff and dries looking wet (it's dry in the picture). Good for spilt fuel and similar as well.

Finally, we get the pigments out. Some dirt coloured pigments on the feet, fixed with a little thinner. These are a bit too pale at the moment but varnish will darken them. For the exhausts a wash made from Mig dark rust oil paint (502), standard rust pigment (P025) and thinner.

I've also taken a graphite stick and rubbed it over the most worn edges. You can see a very fine metallic highlight along the edge.
