Hello Dakka,

today marks a new beginning.
As I´m pretty bored for now with my SM armies...i ant you all to show you the very first pics concerning my newest project...

an imperial steampunk army.

the whole army will have a more british feel to it and is timeline located somewhat during the napoleonic wars and the first world war.

here some verrrry early wip pics...

a future airship as of yet unnamed origin guarded by not converted but soon to be catechans...

well the peaks of the airship will be made out of some cleaning device i cant name yet... also a big can of babymeal and some sokets for the compartment...

as i said a very wip...the parts are jsut dryfitted for presentation... also some heavy cutting and sanding will be involved to the peaks...

vik

Nice start , you just need an empire states building for it to dock with now!

omg for that army all scenery thoughts are open i guess. so if someone (i´m pointing to certain known members here) will tell us there ideas on how an steampunk army should be based and the likes i would be willing to give it a try. by the way did some cobblestone bases some days back but the family didn´t recognized it....this was when i done the lava bases for the iron templars then...

Interesting concept, like to see it when it's done.

thanks shatered soul, hope i can pull it off. to be honest much of my ideas have gone down the drain...
but this is something that marks a new perspective for me...

steampunk is more an artproject than a playable army to paint ...
about art, have been strolling through your gallery, nice stuff there. might you be a bit influenced bei wow? some of your sketches look a bit like art i´ve seen from that game. also i lkie your troopersketches, specially heidi^^

http://defiantgaming.com/shop/hobby-modelling-and-gaming/bases/resin-30mm-cobblestone/prod_1315.html This wo9uld've been good for the base, if only they're not 30mm.

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Miniature-Cobblestone-Stamp I guess you can also use this idea for the bases and terrain.

http://insanguinveritas.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=28&Itemid=25 Another tutorial.

http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=30&zenid=sm14t82bl280uq4vs6eqntfkm3 Secret Weapon also sells cobblestone bases.

Good luck! I'm also in love with steampunk, so I would want for you to pull this off nice and brilliant!

thanks for the support mates.

special thanks for the cool and helpful links, i like especialy the tutorial links. the last is the topmost one. will try that out as it saves a million minutes in the making.

later today i will post my first construction pics. i´ve made a good start.

as i use the above described pieces i could use a bit of advice from you...
to sheet the peaks /domes of the zeppelin, what material would you suggest? and also how would you glue it to the domes? from within asthe grating/steely structure to be seen or from the outside in a kind of papermache´ ?

thanks again for your interest, i hoipe i wont disapoint you and me^^

so here are some progress shots, i had a little fun hacking and sawing at the pieces this morning...

Not sure on the best way to proceed.
They need some longitudinal stringers, imho.
so some plastic strips over the latitudinal bars.
That would allow you to cover with paper and dope possibly. My only concern then would be for durability during game play.

I think if you could place a bridge in the front section (top half) and block out most of the openings from the inside with plastic card on the bottom half and the very top 4four openings of the top half it might look cool, I have an issue with the symetry the back should look different in my oppinion but you have the front half of a second airship already. maybe toy around with some big drinks containers for the back, have you thought about having (lost the correct words but some sort of secondary floatation devices like pontoons on the sides to give it more bulk) and fins and engines, steam driven props and maybe some steam cannon type affairs for mauvering? I like the look so far and have images of leman russ's with huge steam engines at the back

there is lots of things to come for this monster.
i will do something at least to stearing armatures at the right, which will be the tail. so expect tails and fins there. also i have thought about having some side thingies on the hull. probably the engiens there...
the cabin now only in black will be the strearing and comanding place also there will be some heavy weapons there...

@Chibi Bodge-Battle
could you please reform your post? i have an urgent feeling you want to tell me something very useful. but since my englishknowledge derives from comics and fantasy literature i´m not that good (or even less so) in engeniering english.

if you could you can help by making a mockup of the fotos perhaps?
this beast will mark a whole new perspective on wargaming and modeling so i don´t want to mess that up...

thanks all for your support, vik

i think chibi was talking about the left and right lengthways crossbars and the up down ones as well. i think the ship looks good but the box underneath should be smaller in relation to the balloon size , or increase the ballon size , i think you should increase and go fro a killa giant blimp, with troopers dangling from guide ropes.

Made in de
Shroomin Brain Boy

Berlin Germany

as always you hit the nail on the head neil (omg what did i wrote here?)
no seriously. the current pics only show a taped mockup to hold the pieces in place...

i thought the same. to increase the size of the blimp is the way to go... if i could just know how to do that. i always look for help in materials when designing...
for now i haven´t found something fitting that is bigger than that can...damn...

i´ve begun groundwork with the cabin. and i am now building weapon sponsons for the lower part. for now i have one gatlinggun... i will at least build one more...
what other sizewise comparable weponon system should i add?
i will post pics of the gatling wip later that day or better tomorrow...

should i build the blimb body inbetween the domes completly out of plasticard? that world probably look good but i´m not really worth a damn when it comes to cutting straight lines...

probably why i stick to garbage for use of scratchbuilding...

cheers dakka, vik

never would i demand such a thing from you, man!

all i can ask for is:

would you be my guide to the far (not so far by now) borders of madness?

some of them where very helpfull. the question i´m asking myself is do i think to complicated for this project? or is a complicated model the better one?
to make matters worse i have a model in my research bin thats even more striking....behold the madness:

this i guess covers what the others here had in mind for the sides of the blimb...

also i have a small side kick in mind as well:

and this is what i´ve been dreaming of making truly:

now thats a blast don´t you think...

should i downszize my dreams or go full spin and going insane on that?????

Now this is a fun idea. I remember an Ork player did a similar thing to his army as well. He had a bunch of ballons and blimps and such. Very cool.

well orks will only play as victims a role^^. as there will be more people with your kind of mustache be helping the airship to be moving around^^

though i´m not that far in the project it is still possible to make the plans be flexible...

i´m pretty sure that i have to seriously rethink the size of that monster...
which gives a whloe new set of problems in itself: how to sore or transport the thing?...

the bottleoption is quite intriguing....have to search for that bottle design. here in german the funny part is, i´ve seen such bottles but there are not commonly found. we go to 1,5 litres and then it mostly stops. the 2 or the 5 litres are mostly found in cheep shops that sell other stuff that is mostly out of date....

but now that the idea is instaled i will search out for that!

ooh its atricky one those pics are awesome, love the mini one! its so cute! and the bomb one is amazing!
i would personaly double the size , for the mothership. with bomb dropping and troop carriering abilities and make baby one man ones, as fast attack. i suppose the sky is the limit

made a mock up of sizes, i prefer the third down myself .it looks right! other sizes would be huge!!

oh man you only made it worse^^

the fact is, in the beginning i thought one can is all i need to use...

love your four can version with two cabins. looks so much more right to me...

the thing is i want to stay true to the domes. these parts define for me the character of the airship. after that the whole idea is open.
another problem might be the palasiccard i have. its made rather next to a A$ paper sheat. so basically i can do crossbars about 30cm in length...

if i do crossbars from up to down every now and then then i can probably extend the hull endlessly...

should i bild the hull from scratch? and if i shuld then do something to prevent the hull from collapsing invards...

good to have someone to think this through^^.

thanks man for your good advice, vik

hello dakka,

in tribute to neils helpfull suggestions i hearby present you all a new set of conzeptual pics for the ungoing work.
i have deeply thought about englenthen the airship and think it is truly needed.
though neil suggested the use of either multiple cans (wich i regret i don´t have) or the use of larger bottles (see above) i came up of a solution.
after scurring our household i found large banisters(?) for youghurt!. and plenty of them at that.
also for finns and wings i added some flask for showergel...

so without further addo i present:

the big one

the detail view of the finns and wings

front view

detailview from backside with the first cabin and a glimpse of a sponson and a gatling, my favorit weapon...

as mentioned before i attempted to sculpt with air dry clay some cobblestone bases. my family didn´t recognize them as such so now i want to test the community for them...

so please open up the discussion...

thanks man. well the bases where indeed a very fast job. my wife said the cobblestones should look rounder... i understand here... but she didn´t understood the process involved when doing bases so i will give it another try someday when i´m not fixing arships but instead will be doing the guardsmen...

be sure to check in later. more brassy things to come^^
