Hey I'm just wondering how you did the metal effect from the brown? Which colours were in the transition/highlights? Same with the red on the gun and leather handle strap?

Thanks!!!
Karm

Edit - Nevermind - with some mixing on my test model I've figured out the colours used, I just want to say thanks for posting this great WIP of your chaplain as it gave me inspiration for mine!

Nuclear: Properly pronounced new-clear, not new-cue-lir. There is no 'u' between the c and l, so stop saying it because it just makes you sound like a dumbass. This includes nucleolus, and all other derivatives of the word.

Hi Grey Death, I also follow you on your painting blod/site and I love the grey on your Space Marines. I have been looking for a non-metal grey paint scheem for my Grey Knigts that I am about to start and the grey on your marines is exactly what I was looking for. would you mind giving a quick tutorial on what greys you are using and how you build up to the final effect. Also I was wondering, I know from your painting website it looks like you prime in grey some times, what color are you priming them?

I really apprecaite your tutorials and hope to some day paint a fraction as well as you

thanks

DBM, it's only Bestial Brown > Snakebite Leather > Bleached Bone > Skull White. It's all in controlling the layering.

Do you do any intermediate blends or do you just go with a watered down/opague layer? Love your work by the way and thanks for breaking down your color technique...really helps as I am not quite happy with the way my bone/ivory has turned out in the past.

Alllllllllllllrighty, I've jumped off the SoMs-wagon for a few days now and have been commissioned to work on a small 2x2 demo table for Flames of War's Open Fire starter box. The local shop owner has asked me to do the table as he just can't find the time. And since I've been dying to work on some terrain lately, this is the perfect chance for me to scratch the itch.

The overall idea is to have a small plateau type hill for a small village/town with a road going through. The town will be made up of premade terrain that is already painted and ready to go at the shop. So really all I have to do is make the hills and the road, texture and paint it all.

To get started I just roughed out the shape of the table using expanded insulation foam board:

When the glue had dried I started in with my favorite terrain medium: Spackle!

I'm using the spackle to help smooth the transitions of the hills and get the angles of the slopes just right.

Right now the table has yet another layer of spackle on it drying outside. After that's dry, I'll do a quick sanding and start getting some texture on the table.

Stay Tuned!

-Aaron

Sounds like a nice project as a change up from the SOM. I'll be taking note as I plan to make my own Blood Bowl pitch soon too.

Out of interest, how big are FoW battlefields normally?

Disjointed Entity, I have never played a single game of it ^_^. But I'm hoping to learn ^_-.

Dante, I've seen the guys up at the shop use full 4x6 tables most days. They FILL the thing with terrain and play for a good couple of hours.

Roleplayer, check the backlog of posts in this thread, there is bound to be a post from me explaining the technique.

Valhallan, He won! ^_^ And he is also now in his new owners possession at long last.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Late update with some progress pics:

It's all done for now. I'll be sure to get a pic with the full set of terrain and models up on here as soon as I can ^_^.

This was a great little project that definitely let me just cut loose with terrain, even if it was just for a few days. Happy to get that out of my system.

Looks a million times better when I zoom in. Your roads look fantastic, truly inspiring. I have to start making mass amount of terrain soon, and I am getting a lot of tips from your thread; thank you .

I have to ask though... what are all the big signs on the table???

Wrexasaur, Glad you're getting something from the WIP shots I took! As for the signs it's from a posterboard my wife had to make for Nursing school ^_^; She gave it to me to do with whatever I wanted since she's all finished up with school (YAY!), and I found a use in catching the extra flock to help save for other projects!

Ok, so here's another random little project:

It's an A.P.E. Grunt from Grindhouse Games' Incursion. This model is courtesy of Iorek from Adepticon ^_^.

I've been dying to get my hands on one of these guys, and now that I've got one I can't wait to paint it up!

I've also recently picked up my first issue of Wargames Illustrated that had two Perry Miniatures Plastic minis that came free with the magazine. I have them modeled up on square bases and they're primed and ready to go for paint. I might give them a quick run through based on the color scheme in the magazine, we'll see if that pans out!

Oooh, looking forward to seeing what you do with the Perry mini's, are they the napoleonics?

Thats a really nice base on the new mini, looks like a cool figure too.

What do you have planned for the colour scheme?

Cheers,

Dante

Dante, They are indeed Napoleonic Riflemen, I'm looking forward to giving these guys a go soon, they should be good fun.

I actually used spackle/filler for the base on this guy ^_^. I have been pushing it on my website as a wonder-material for modeling and thought that it would work out perfectly for what I wanted to do with the base on this guy. I feel justified in the decision to use it as the final result worked out to be exactly how I wanted. I'm going to do a write up on the process with this one (I have photos of all the WIP up to this point on the base).

The paint will be pretty much straight from what the Incursion team did.

+++++++++++++

Trying some mixed spray on this guy to add some instant shadows.

And you can see the Perry Minis next to him ^_^.

Went digging through my vallejo paints and I don't seem to have the same paints as the Incursion team used, and I'm not really up for ordering more right now, so I'll just have to make due ^_-. Stay Tuned.

Grey Death, how do the Perry Plastics stack up to a GW's Imperial guardman?? I thought about using the Perry Plastic line to create a unique guard regiment, but I wanted to know how well they stack up to GW's stuff?

Thanks,

I have been a lurker in this forum for quite a while, but I had to create an account just to tell you 2 things

1) You have some great and inspiring work in this thread

2) I think it is hysterical that you used what looks like a TPN research poster as your working surface on that recent table. Bravo

Can't I count all my dead night goblins as cover? There should be enough to stack up.

Great stuff, looking forward to the basing article too, basing is something I think I have criminally neglected to develop skills at so you have at least one reader (and more than likely hundereds more!) lined up for when it's ready!

Chap P, I'll get a pic up soon of a side by side comparison so you can check out the differences and scale yourself ^_^

meyer, it is indeed my wifes TPN final project for Nursing school! Glad I could bring you to the posting side of things with my work and disregard for all my wife's hard work on her poster ^_- (she told me I could have it!)

Dante, to have someone of your caliber reading my humble experiences in modeling and painting is truly an honor!

Oh, and what I came back to the thread for:

Some of the subtle work I've done isn't coming through in the photos, but it's still got a long long way to go yet. I'm trying to figure out how to get an oil weathered effect without oils. I'm thinking just some glaze work with yellows and blues should do the trick followed up by very light glazing of some white streaks. My goal is to have a color modulation feel on a small mini like this. It should work out, but getting there without an airbrush and oils (just too small for me to think about oils) should take some doing.

Lighter weathering (than you're used to seeing from me lately ^_-) with a bit of dusting of the lower extremities, oil leaks with a VERY light about amount of rust should do.

C&C welcome and wanted as always!

@Grey Death: Thanks, I appreciate your time and consideration of taking a picture for me =D

I have seen Victrix size comparisons but no Perry Brother shots yet.

I just want to know if I would be barking up the wrong tree or not, with any kind of conversion work.

Thanks again,
Chappy P!

That guy is looking amazing already. I will say yet again, I'm stealing ideas for basing here!

I can make out some of the subtle work but as you say, the pic isn't doing you justice.

Interested to see what you do with the oil effect too. How did you find the pre-umbrage undercoating? Did it make things any easier?

Cheers,

Dante

Chap, I was able to get that photo for you this morning check it out here.

SoG, thanks, I used Brown Violet (US Army's Armor color for WW2 if Vallejo has anything to say about it ^_^). Various highlighting shades and colors on top of that.

Dante, Thanks man. I think the basing worked out perfectly for what I was going for. I didn't refine it any past the dividing lines I carved out. I sort of gave up on the whole 'pre-umbage' thing. I just felt I wanted to paint a different way with this guy. Gotta go with what you feel, not what you wanted to try.

That Ape suit looks ace man, will be cool to see what you manage to do with the light weathering.

That powerfist, was it part of the original model? It looks a lot like GW fists... Might be the pictures though.

@Grey Death: Thanks for the photo, from what I can tell the perry plastics are a bit weedier than GW heroic scale mammoth men. Height wise they look pretty on par with GW which is a huge plus. I might have to check out a box, just not sure what to do to sci-fi them up a bit for 40k purposes though??
