It is if you have purchasable add-ons at all.

Sometimes, but not in this particular case. The costs associated with an 'add on' for this company are minimal really so unlocking them doesn't do any real damage. We can assume they plan on actually making the figures anyway so all that activating an extra purchasable add on does is bring forward those costs to be included int he kickstarter, and that would be offset by anyone purchasing said add on.

The worst case scenario would be to unlock something unpopular with the shipping, in which case they are paying for sculpting/printing/moulding and casting for minimal sales. Nothing compared to giving 700 pledgers a free large scale character figure in multipart resin. Those freebie adds ons will 'hurt'.

Anything that has any additional weight or volume will factor into the shipping costs.

Doesn't matter if they're "free" or not.

Yeah, seems to me it makes more sense for the companies running the KS projects to not charge for shipping until they last minute when they have the actual shipping costs.
It does but it is sometimes difficult to do for big projects because of sticker shock. I've heard some outrage at various KS because their shipping costs were so high and it was unexpected. It is used to be that creators calculated estimate, add 6-10% and absorb them as part of distrubtion cost. It is now becoming more of a trend to add shipping at the end of the campaign, charging what the actual total may be. Depending on who they use for shipping (distribution, simple postal service, ups, fedex) the differences can vary greatly from $5-50.

One of the harder things for a smaller KS (I'm not saying that this one is a smaller one) is trying to find that balance. For example something that costs $6 in the US, costs me $30 to send to Canada and Europe through normal postal means. Granted a lot of that is dependant on weight and packaging, which is why a lot of KS may have one retail box, with the rest being loose in bundles.

 Artemis Black wrote:
Added to your campaign, unlocking 2-3 stretch goals, possibly of freebies so zero increase in actual sales (There may be a minor increase in sales if the unlocks are add ons).
To be fair though their campaign isn't unlocking a lot of freebies, they are in terms of a couple single miniatures but compared to other campaigns where you'd get more. Not to mention their stretch goals are fairly spaced out.

 cincydooley wrote:
Honestly, I think the way CMoN is doing it now is probably the best way to do it. You estimate shipping, and then you have actual shipping at the end. The only better way is probably offering a "shipping credit."
I believe that is the safest way, at least for a companies who may not have experience with shipping or contracts through distribution centers. Give an estimate, have it applied as a credit at the end to go towards the actual amount. It helps avoid sticker shock for some.

No doubt.

That's honestly, why I tend to be more hesitant to back projects that won't be distributed from the US. It have to do a cost-benefit analysis for myself to determine if the KS cost + shipping is worth it for me. For instance, Heroes of Normandie's first KS was not worth it for me due to the shipping.

I know that it's much easier for me to say that being from the US, where the majority of the projects either originate or are routed through, but it's just how it is. I've picked up multiple KS projects at conventions in part because I know it saves the company I'm patronizing money.

Well yes, but $15 resin figures add virtually nothing to the weight of a box already in large postal categories compared to the profit from the figure itself. They'd have to be very unlucky for that 20 grams to even push them into a new postal bracket so the most likely outcome is additions of single figures have zero effect on shipping. Once you're past 1kg, as the boxset will certainly be, then it's negligible costs for extras.

Having to give 700 large multipart resin figures away is a far bigger expenditure. If they were 'really' unlucky that could be 1400 large multipart resin figures. (At the moment it's neither as the only freebies on the stretch goal list will all be unlocked without postage I would think and they aren't showing what's after $140k.

Hmm some weird drop of like 2k in the pledges occurred. It seems that scale games contacted people and its mostly due to financial occurrences on some peoples parts but I wonder why you would change now? I mean doesnt it make sense to make changes at the end? Then again maybe thats just me. I just dont like to see that total drop below 90K. Not cool. I mean I know a lot of people are going to be adding a lot of money post KS but still I hope most stay in for what they got.

I have 6 Kickstarters ending shortly and 4 pledge managers closing in 4 weeks. There has definitely been some shifting around on my part (not with this campaign) but it happens. There could be a lot of different reasons, new medical bills, kids needs glasses, car got a flat and needs a new set of tires. I just replaced the breaks in my truck and a new battery, I almost pulled out of 2 campaigns myself to cover... thankfully my bonus covered me.

Someone did a Battle Rep, testing out the alpha rules for Fallen Frontiers and posted it on Facebook here:
Got a game in to Playtest today. I used the Ares alpha list and my buddy used the Riff alpha list. His list contained an assault squad led by Sihlas Fenn, a trooper squad with an officer, and a trooper squad with a heavy machinegunner. My list contained a soldier unit with both a sergeant and a gauss gunner, and a soldier squad with Bitsie. We set up the battlefield with the objective in the middle, and the four Krithium deposits. Riff setup first, and the Ares setup second. Ares win initiative and made the Riff activate first. (Pay no attention to my army loitering on the side)

The end of round 1.1 (round.phase), we moved into position around our deposits and figured out who was going to break the ice. By 1.3, Riff sent their middle trooper squad towards the objective. Bitsie squad chews them up pretty well, Sihlas squad moves behind the tower on the right. 2.1 comes around. I had taken the initiative in both 1.3 and 1.4. I won the initiative roll for 2.1. My Bitsie squad had taken a hit from the heavy machinegunner and the Riff player pinned them. Sihlas squad moved within assault range.

Here was my Ares dilemma. If I take initiative, two things happen. Bitsie would have to take her pinning morale check, and if she misses I am out a full squad and hero. I would also be fatigued, so my shooting would be at a disadvantage as well as an assault. If I pass the initiative, Sihlas gets the assault, and I would have a pinned disadvantage during my turn. I decided to try to take the initiative. I killed two of Sihlas squad, lessening the effect of his assault. Missed on the left hand side (where everyone is afraid of poking their head out. Sihlas assaults, gets three hits and miraculously I save them all. This would end up being a long combat because we kept missing or tying in casualties.

By the end of the game, Riff ended up getting two activations in a row setting up a move and fire against the left hand Ares squad, decimating them. Bitsie's squad finally took out Sihlas, but she was reduced to her and two soldiers. These were cut down eventually by the Riff machine gunner, securing the win for the Riff.

Conclusions:
There needs to be a starting level of command and Krithium. Waiting four phases before you can really use any cards was rough. We felt a good compromise would have been to give 3 command/3 Krithium to start, and then reduce the end of turn amounts by one automatic point each, and one per hero/leader and one per Krithium deposit.

Sihlas and the assault units seemed to lack a bit of shock and awe when assaulting. I rolled my saves really well, but it seems like my Ares should have feared them a bit more than I did.

Overall, we felt the Ares were a bit stronger overall, but with the small amount of units and cards, we're overlooking that at the moment.

All in all, we had a great time, and really love how the base system works so far. The timing of fatigue and activations make for some very stressful decisions, and we really liked it. Will play another game next weekend!

Exactly as Dark says gak happens dont read too much into it. I just had to shell out $800 on new tyres and already owe one sculptor for his work .

Stopping from dropping to $1 myself as I will spend about $100 on single heroes anyway so keeps the total I'm going to invest. Unless a painters pledge appear but that's looking less likely.

Choose your own heroes for stretch goals!

Greetings backers,

We have been listening to your feedback, and today we bring you something which had been on our minds since we introduced the custom starter set: the ability to choose your own heroes for stretch goals.

This is how things are changing:

At $60k, $100k and $110k we unlock a free hero of your choice. This can be any hero from the add-ons section, regardless of faction.
Some heroes are going to be unlocked earlier. Bitsie has been moved to $55k, Hank has been moved to $97,5k ad Fink has been moved to $105k.
Magnus and Alexander have been added as $92,5k stretch goals as a complement for the Tharken 17 campaign (background story coming soon).

Of course we still have some more hidden surprises, so stay tuned!

Definitely a great idea to allow choice of hero as well. I hope those changes will help bring some new life to the campaign... but with the holidays, we might already be at the limits considering the other Kickstarters currently happening. Not that I don't mind, at this point everything is gravy. I do expect there to be a bigger push though towards the last 48 hours with this one.

It does make a dedicated painters pledge kind of pointless now if you are getting 7 heroes plus the box set at a cheaper price than buying 7 heroes individually.

To be honest its something they should have done from the beginning is give the customer choice. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though.

It depends, the heroes in the box set are still locked in depending on the factions you choose for your core set. You don't get to choose those. However a Core Set is a better choice for painters, more miniatures with now the bonus to be able to choose heroes that are unlocked. At the moment we've only unlocked one, hopefully we'll break $110k by the end of the campaign and unlock 2 others.

Yes but you are going to pick a core set you want so you are going to get a hero set you want. I'm hoping 110k will be an easy hit be surprised if its not. Actually I forgot about the $15 price for changing the core set.

I'll definitely be taking advantage of this, the Ares heroes don't interest me at all so being able to swap two of them out is very useful.

This one is in a serious mid-campaign lull...

As long as it gets to $110K, I'll be happy.

I'll be really happy if it gets to $130K though - as I'm sure Scale Games will be too!

I just want all the heroes to unlock...

Anyway, loving the Vulcan art in this latest update!

Presenting: Sayx Vulcans

Since the Sayx first encountered Ares operators at Magellan they realized that the firepower of their regular troops was insufficient to confront their new enemy. Even their elite units found enormous difficulties in penetrating the thick armor of Ares troops. At that moment began the Vulcan project: An armored suit agile enough to deploy in squadrons from a ship or shuttle and capable of piecing any personal or light vehicle armor.

Vulcans are deployed as mobile weapon platform and provide covering fire to advancing ground troops. Their long range and high firepower excel at clearing andvance corridors and help in covering strategic areas of the battlefield. The Vulcans have a high defense but they are not prepared for combat at close range, and their lack of mobility can make them vulnerable in melee.

Yeah really like that art as well as the pics of the berserker. Don't know how this is going to end. Manic 48 hours perhaps.

I will probably be adding more money post campaign. Depends on how much spare change is lying around.

'Tis NOT the Season for spending a lot on Kickstarter - at least not for me!

I'm in for $100 now, and that was a stretch.

I'll add quite a bit in the Pledge Manager - provided they are smart about it and have it close well after Christmas!

Black Freeday & Presenting: Despair

Black Freeday

This Friday we are going to be done with our second week on kickstarter, and so we wanted to give you all a little treat for sticking with us this long. Now we cannot tell you exactly what we are going to be doing yet, however “someone” sent me this little image and I just had to share it with you...

Despair

Jeri Hansen was the seventh child out of nine. A star pupil and she excelled at gymnastics too. She was the star flag twirler for her college gymnastic team, no one could match her grace and cat like reflexes. But that afternoon at the colony stadium everything was so fast not even she could react.

She was struck by some kind of stunning beam and fell immediately to the ground. A blurred shape was before her, as her eyes began to focus she saw a mechanical body looking down at her with eyes glowing red. Once Jeri was fully awake and aware she realized everybody surrounding her was dead. Thousands of them.

“Please designate your identity.”, she heard in her head. “Are you going to kill me too?” “No, you are a valuable exception. Please designate your identity.”

She said nothing. All she could think of was that her family and relatives were probably among the dead bodies. The metallic voice then said:

“Despair is now your designated identity, prepare for orders.”

But she wasn’t prepared for the pain that followed.

I guess we'll find out more...tomorrow?

We passed the $92,000 mark and have unlocked two new heroes, Harvester Magnus and Ares Alexander "Operator 03". They are still hinting at surprise tomorrow, so we shall see what they have up their sleeve. I would have to guess a discount on something, maybe shipping since that seems to be the current 'complaint' at the time.

Update 26: Gameplay Example: Phases & Fatigue
Spoiler:

Today we are going to show you a simple example of how Initiative, Phases and Fatigue interact with each other, which should give you a better idea of how the game plays. Note that in this tutorial we are not going to be talking about hero, resource and card interaction, which will be covered later.

Here you can see a very basic table setup. The Ares player has deployed 3 squads at the top, whilst the Riffs player has deployed 3 squads at the bottom.

The players roll-off for Initiative, and the Ares player wins, so he gets to activate his units on Phase 1. He decides to move all of squads forward, taking cover behind crates and containers.

The players roll-off for Initiative, and the Ares player wins again, so he gets to activate his units on Phase 2. He pushes forward with his middle squad, and he shoots with the other two. The left squad gets a couple of hits, but the Riffs armor deflects them. The right squad manages to inflict 2 wounds, and they are assigned to the two Berserkers in the open.

Since the Ares player already had Initiative twice during this round, the Riffs player automatically gets the Initiative from now on. On Phase 3 the Riffs player is not too worried about taking hits, so he moves his Berserkers into the open, lining them up for an Assault. He moves the other two squads forward and into cover, so that the Ares are in range of their carbines.

The Riff player decides to go all out on Phase 4, and opens fire on the Ares with his two Riffs squads. The left squad manages to inflict 2 wounds despite shooting at enemies in cover, whilst the center squad doesn’t score a single hit. The Berserkers assault the Ares unit behind the crates, inflicting 3 wounds and avenging their fallen brothers.

Round 1 is over, and Round 2 begins. The players roll-off and the Riffs player wins. Taking the Initiative on this Phase means that his units are going to be fatigued, but it seems worth it. The player assaults the Ares squads with his Berserkers, which destroy the enemy. The center squad moves up, albeit slower because it is fatigued. The left squad opens fire on the Ares, but their shots fail to connect, again due to fatigue.

The players roll-off and the Ares player wins, taking Initiative for Phase 2. The two squads are activated and reign doom on the Riffs with their assault rifles, killing 2 Riffs and destroying the Berserker squad.

That’s it for right now. We hope you enjoyed this little gameplay example, and if you have any questions please post them in the comments below!

Update #27: Presenting: Dianne Tianseen & Bianca Render!
Spoiler:
BLACK FREEDAY & GAMEPLAY

Hello Backers!

For those of you who missed them, we have made two fairly important updates, which we think you should definitely check out.

First we have posted a gameplay example going over the phase and fatigue rules. This should give you a good feeling of how the game plays. Read more here: http://kck.st/15D5tnC

Second we have posted a little tease regarding what we are calling Black Freeday. We can’t tell you what exactly it is yet, but the name should be a hint. Read more here: http://kck.st/1xGW598

DIANNE TIANSEEN

The rank of lieutenant sixth grade is not something that is handed out easily in the Sayx Corporation.

It requires many skills, no scruples and a little luck to achieve it. Of course being a senior commander of the fleet you make a lot of enemies, but with the proper strategy many of them end up losing their lives on the field of battle. Heroes for the corporation, an inspiration for the troops, and also one less problem for his supreiors.

With 5 campaigns on her shoulder, Dianne has seen many conflicts and has managed to emerbe victorious from all of them. Ares, Riffs, Humans and even the sheep-like herds of Harvesters end up succumbing to a well-trained army. With the right equipement the enemies makes no difference, the only difference is the fluid spilled when they are shot.

You can see Dianne’s render here:

Good to see some forward momentum here finally!

I wonder what got this one going again?

Maybe a lack of truly 'good deals' in the USA "Black Friday" sales?

Not entirely sure but there is some truth on the Black Friday sales. I know someone from our game group brought the discussion over to reddit in a couple places. I also suggested they start a note on Board Game Geek in the Kickstarter section. They had one post in the News Press area, but nothing in the Kickstarter section. Not sure if that contributed at all, but it did start a couple discussions in those areas. Maybe its the holiday weekend and people are looking at Kickstarter while waiting for Turkey? ^_^ Still nice seeing a continual gradual climb in backers though, haven't been losing any just fluctuating totals.

Hello everyone,

Fallen Frontiers is heading into its last week of funding, so let’s kick it off with a bang!

As some of you may have noticed, we are not doing Black Friday deals today, but instead we are having our own special day: Black Feeday!

To thank all of you for your generous support, we are giving out FREE stuff to all people who pledged at the Assault Trooper level or higher, and the higher level you pledged, the more goodies you get!

Now then, who gets what FREE goodies?

Assault Trooper = 5x Scenic Bases
Faction = 5x Scenic Bases + 1x Hero
Battle Squad = 5x Scenic Bases + 1x Hero + 1x Resin Scenery
Elite Squad = 5x Scenic Bases + 2x Hero + 2x Resin Scenery
Commander = 10x Scenic Bases + 3x Hero + 3x Resin Scenery

So, what are you waiting for? Share this post, tell your friends and enjoy your new FREE goodies!

Now about Cyber Monday...

Hhmmmm now to do some recalculating on what to get. But first breakfast and lots of coffee.

Edit: If you do a double pledge (2x Battle Squad) you do not receive double stretch goals, 2x Free Heroes... but you do get double Black Freeday specials (2x Free Hero, 10 Scenic Bases, 2 Scenery resin elements. That could potentially make for a couple friends who want to split an army, a better deal than both getting 2x Assault Trooper. Hypothetical though, I haven't actually done the math for it yet. Had to chase the dog down, she broke out of the fence and was playing in the neighbors muddy yard. So I have been fixing a fence all day.

Gameplay update!

Update #31

Nov 30 2014

Gameplay Example: Cards & Units

Today we are going to show you an example of the cards and units interact with each other. Note that this a simplified example for illustration purposes, and that some of the card text is going to change.

The table setup is pretty straightforward. The Ares player is on top with 1 squad, whilst the Riffs player is at the bottom with 2 squads, one of which contains Sihlas Fenn. The Riffs player also has a “March” card in his hand.

The Riff player, knowing that his Berserkers excel in close combat, has a clever plan. Since the Ares troopers are outside of the Berserkers assault range, he is going to use the “March” card to help him close the gap. “March” allows his Berserkers to move 2 extra inches, and with the special ability of Sihlas Fenn, which allows his squad to move D3 extra inches, that should be plenty to assault.

The Riffs have the initiative, and the player sets his plan in motion. He declares an assault, which allows his Berserkers to move 6”. Then he rolls a D3 for Sihlas Fenn’s ability, and gets a 2, allowing his Berserkers to move 8”. Finally he plays the March card by spending 1 Command point, which allows his Berserkes to move 10”, reaching the Ares troopers.

However before he gets to move, his opponent plays the “Cyber Hack” card. “Cyber Hack” has a Reaction effect, meaning it can be played during the Riffs players turn, and it nullifies the effects of “March”.

After having resolved all cards effect, they are both discarded, and now the Riffs player gets to complete his actions. He moves both of his squads forward, trying to set up an assault for the next phase. Note that the Berserkers still get to move 8” thanks to Silhas Fenn’s ability.

The next phase starts, and the Ares have the Initiative. The player decides to make the Ares troopers shoot at the Berserkers, and manages to inflict 3 wounds. However before the wounds are resolved, the Riffs player uses a “First Aid” card. “First Aid” allows a unit to remove wounds on a result of 4+. The player rolls 3 dice, and scores 4+ only 1 time, meaning that the Berserkers lose 2 models.

That’s it for right now. We hope you enjoyed this little gameplay example, and if you have any questions please post them in the comments below!
