**EDIT**

This is my new and improved 40k thread which started out as just my IG but will now include my efforts to build my Marines an entire Battle Company. Marines start on p19, read on for hot Guard action and models like these...

Eventually, or skip to the power armoured section (p19 onwards) for the new updates and stuff like this..

Back IG around p28 and then back to SM to finish the Company.

Hope you enjoy, please do comment if you like what you see..thanks

Hi There!

I've been wanting to BLOG my Guard and I finally have a camera which is just good enough to allow me to do so. Here are my burgeoning Guard. They are the 15th Macragge PDF regiment, 'Interior Guard' to some perhaps.

I wanted an Imperial Guard army that was only simply equipped and had the basic versions of gear and vehicles. I wanted to be able to field large amounts of troopers with big tanks in support, not a MechVet/elite drop troop aircav type of thing. Old school guard. I also am primarily a marine player (sorry) and wanted these guys to compliment my Ultras (can be seen in action Here) and to give me a very different army to play with.

I have nearly finished about 1.5k and will post it up as I can take photos over the next few weeks. I mainly take photos when I'm in Cut & Thrust FLGS in Bristol as Alex has nice angle poise daylight bulbs. I aim to do regular updates, especially to catch up to where I am in painting and then move to more WiP stuff. I aim to get to about 2.5k all painted and field them with 2.5 of my marines and ally with 5k of more guard and take on Alex's entire 10k of Nids....we hope to play this mega game some time next year and to report it on Dakka!

I have 'speed painted' these guys to get them done quickly, my marines get the good stuff, the guard make do (as always..). Heros and command squads get more time (such as my commissar for instance) as do the vehicles. I paint primarily to play the game not as purely display pieces.

Here is my first platoon (numbered 5):

They tend to Blob up around my commissar and FRFSRF a lot.

Commisar B'stard

Command Platoon (further pics of all these guys in the gallery)

Squad one

Pretty basic load outs, 2 ACs and 2 GLs in the squads, PCs get 2 GLs and a bolt pistol (if they have been very good maybe a power weapon). The medic in the PCs is never used as one anymore, this unit were done in the dying days of the last codex, back when they were worth getting. This keeps the unit cheap in dollarpounds and points both of which are an objective.

The Lieutenant is a very old model cookies if you can spot it under the conversion.

That will do for now, more to follow!

C&C welcomed!

DUTY AND HONOUR (and of course Dakka)

Wow those are really cool and well done too.

Keep up with the work as I would love to see even more of these guys.

The only thing that I see is a problem is the right shoulder pad as it seems weird to do a blue trim on one but not both.

Thanks for your quick comments!
I do like it's asymmetry, I was wondering what area to do blue as I wanted part of them in the chapter colour, but I didn't want to see them running round in blue jumpsuits. I settled on the one shoulder pad (as helmets would be too UN) I'm probably used to it now.

What I would do is either do the whole right shoulder pad as blue with a lighter blue trim or if you're up to the challenge is to file off the eagel on the flak armor and to paint the left breast plate armor blue with the white omega symbol on it. I think that would look really sweet for a Macragge PDF.

The whole right shoulder pad is blue, but my Pic is a little dark, the lighter blue is a highlight. My Ultras have a dark blue look as I dislike the powdery blue they sometimes end up, there's a link to a batrep they fight in in my 1st post. It would be ace to do the chest eagle filing but against the idea of them being a quick (relatively) army to do and I might start killing people if I have to file (well cut) off 120 odd eagles....and then paint the omega in a difficult to reach area,

Then you're using really really dark blue. Are you using a midnight or a regal blue for the right shoulder pad? If so I would do a mix of 4/5 blue and 1/5 white just to allow the blue to show a little more.

The filing isn't really that bad, I had a renegade IG army a year or two ago were I filed off about 100 eagels. You can do about 1 eagel every 30 seconds. Also the omega symbol isn't bad if you create a stencil for it. That would actually be rather quick.

Thanks a lot everyone

@ishanmaster

Yes I use regal with a black wash and then a single stripe of ultramarine to highlight, I use midnight to base my marines. If I were to do them again I think I would seriously consider what you suggested, I hadn't thought of a stencil (nor used one before actually). The idea of retconning everyone gives me the screaming heebie-jeebies however...

I'll try to post and annotate my heavy weapon teams this weekend and then do the CCS (which is where my Std Bearer is from {1st image}).

Assuming you mean the grey jumpsuits, I just paint them codex grey and ink black (the old ink) and then dry brush back with codex. For important people I paint on the highlights after a minimal drybrush and then do another layer or two with increasing amounts of fortress grey added. I have just swapped to Vallejo Game colour for the main grey as it's better at coverage, however it doesn't taste as nice.....

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hiya

Here are my first two weapon batteries.

The loader is shouting updated targeting info to the firer who is adjusting the 'aim'.

These guys are just putting down fire, ignore the 'battle damage' I'll fix that at some point.

The battery leader has received worrying news on the comnet and is bollocking the loader for shelling friendlies, the loader is replying "What does blue on blue mean?".

Group shot. I really like mortars, they are really 'guardy' to me. I like that only they have them, (i.e. Marines etc don't) and I have used weapons like that for my guard (GLs, ACs etc) all the way through to further differentiate them from my marines. This was the first weapon battery I put together. I really like the modelling opportunities offered by the 60mm bases and wanted them to look like they were in a hastily prepared firing position. The posts are just matchsticks and the mud polyfiller.

I managed to make 9 heavy weapon teams from one box (take that GW!) and have used two of the lascannons to replace 'Russ ones.
here is the next unit:

I really like the running DKoK weapon teams and wanted this team to look as though they were sprinting to cover. Note the marine rocket ammo as I think the guard rockets look more like HKs or torpeados.

Firer: "Did I hit it this time?"
Loader: ".........."
Note green stuff goggles.

Loader: "Look I know your trying and that's what really matters, just take your time. Try again"

Whole battery. Being more recently painted these guys look a bit nicer. As a more point intensive unit they have occupied hard cover which is mainly made out of plastic Epic ruins with the fronts polyfillered. I have added all sorts of crap to create rubble around them, I now have a rubble box to build up a collection for this kind of basing.

That will do for now. I'll try to post up the pics for my CCS soon and get the next platoon (my 'assault' platoon!) and maybe some armour photographed next week.

I hope you like my 'Big' platoon, it had another AC/GL infantry squad too but that was dropped from my 'All Comers' army list in favour of a second chimera. That squad will now from part of my 3rd (WiP) platoon, neccessary to form a 'Shield Company' for APOCALYPSE! Which is an awesome formation and really characterful I think.

See you on the battlefield or if your a Bristolian maybe Tesco's.....

Yo

Here is the original model that my 1st platoon's lieutenant is based on, the page is from the old Blue Citadel calogue. A range of models used a lot with the pre curser game of Necromunda, Confrontation.

I've added a (bad) GS cap and standard cadian arms, the blade is a scout 'knife'. the hilt of his dagger is the only gold area in all my infantry platoons. I wanted gold to look really special and unusual in this army.

Here is some pics of my CCS.

My Captain, Captain Sharpe. Another Rogue Trader era model. Added Cadian arms, frag granade. The binoc holding hand is GS as is the medal. I have added double stripes to his sleave, in the same place as the Sergeants have them as standard. My Lieutenants have single stripes.

My favourite guardsmen so far. Never does anything in games, just looks cool. I added the hat (forage cap?) and was going for something like this:

Don't think I really managed it, however still looks good. I added stripes to his sleave and did an extra one too as I think of him as a Staff Sarge or RSM.

Here is my only plasma gun so far. I think these weapons would be in short supply for spoddy garrison troops, so only my CCS gets one. I wanted to make is look unweildy and difficult for a single trooper to operate. The vox helmet makes a passable 'targety' helmet I think. The model is missing a power cable, I need to get hold off the right bit of guitar wire, what string do people normally use?

The standard bearer has had a banner swap, I put an extra GS purity seal on the back to help it stay on. I cut/filed the skull out of the middle of the banner and replaced it with a painted U symbol. The scrolls bear the regiments motto as well as a battle honour won in the first tyrannic war.

My version of the Master of Ordnance. I tried to do the same style of hat cap thingy as Scarface, also didn't quite get it. Both arms are heavily GSed and one hand is entiely GS the other about half. I wanted it to look as if he was turning away from his comlink to survey his fall of shot. The base unit of the comlink is the top half of a vox with GS receiver bits to replace handset onto. I added a basic bionic eye and strip under his chest eagle. The fluff mentions servitor skulls helping them out and I liked that idea and so added one. I really like big artillery but think they should be off board really, a MoO is great as for only 30 points you get a (drunk) basilisk, Ace! Still I find him very effective and have scored a reasonable amount of direct hits.

Group shot.

I'll do some more pics this week, I hope to have a biggish game on Friday, a farewell MeanGreenStompa battle. We'll hopefully manage some pics and do a BatRep, I'll link to it here provided we manage it all!

C&C welcome.

Stay Classy Dakka

Hiya

I just typed out 90% of this update only to accidentally close the browser page.......

Well the farewell MeanGreenStompa game didn't happen, he and his teammate called in sick (read terrified) but I did have my first 2k game which was great fun. However we took no pics so no BatRep (good! I lost ).

Anyhoo

This is my 2nd or 'Assault Platoon' (numbered 4).
"Why are they called an assault platoon?" I'm asked.
"Because they have bayonets" I reply.
"What do bayonets do in game?"
"Nothing" I say.

Family photo. This units job is to wait in reserve and try to turn up in time to flamer whoever it is who just wiped out 1st Platoon in an assault....

Here we see Lieutenant 'Insert name here'. The ubiquitous tank commanders head, a GS (and slightly bad, this was a while ago) breastplate and the mandatory officiers boltpistol. BPs are like special weapons in a guard army anyway. The powerfist is a RTB01 fist I had lying around, my 3rd platoon LT is getting one as well, I'm not sold on the current guard fists.

Sergeant. All my command squads have a NCO supporting the CO, in 1st Platoon we have Sergeant Eldar Head. I tried to contrast the 2 squads, I wanted 1st PCS to be aloof and at ease and 2nd PCS to be tough and action posed.

Specials. I use a slightly trimmed vox head for all my flamers. I wouldn't want to breathe that stuff in....

Medic. I don't use him as one but like the idea of platoons having them. He will be a vox caster in APOC but in normal games just a LP&CCW bullet catcher. The 'med kit' is a trimmed down vox set.

Squad one.

Squad two. Note rare trooper conversion in pic 2, he's supposed to be biting the pin out of a frag.

Both units just have flamers (oh and bayonets). I think pose is vitally important in modelling and really like how characterful the basic cadians can be. Squad ones Sgt. is a favourite. All my Sarges have white stripes on their helmets as a nod towards Ultra's veteran white helmets. This can also be read as whiteshields however.......some people have said "Why are all your squads in your Adobe army led by consripts?". My response is to leave the room at this point. And to cry. Naked. I'll stop now.

Hope you like them all. I will post up some more stuff soon..

C&C welcome

S'up

Here's the first pics of something with an armour value. It's not the first vehicle I did but I've yet to get pics of my Russ squadron.

My lovely scout sentinal. Base is a mix of any old crap I had lying around and a lot of Polyfilla. I went for a 'running' pose, as if it's trying to close distance to employ it's heavy flamer.

I added a HK missile as I like the idea of scouting in with a few of these and popping off inaccurate and expensive one shot weapons at rear/side armour of stuff. I would happily pay 10 pts to kill a marine (pref a Death Comapany member) too. Note the space under the canopy, I name all my vehicles and currently am at a loss of what to go for. I want something that would suit a group of 3 (ie 3 musketeers etc).
Any suggestions very welcome.

I added a gasmask thing off the command sprue to the pilot, I made GS goggles too (because I dropped the head it came with which did that dissappear trick tiny pieces of plastic love to do).

Shazam!
Magically it's weaponless! This was my first go with magnets. I cut off the hole for the weapon mount and replaced it with a magnet, all the weapons have the pin removed and bits of staple greenstuffed into place. It mostly works, I will need to be more careful mounting the staple bits next time to ensure they hold the weapons straighter. I have also put a magnet behind the box that I have GS'ed the HK to incase I don't have the 10pts to waste. I have also done an AC and MultiLazor but unfortunately they weren't with me at time of photographing.

I have recently got a 2nd Sentinal and plan to eventually get 3 (total) of the killer robot chickens as I think they're ace.

I'll post up some more pics soon and hopefully take some more tomorow.

Feel free to tell me what you think and hope to see you on the battlefield!
