Rule books packed up for the flight; so help me out.
IIRC, MR gives you a better ward save vs Direct Damage and Magic Missiles.
How do you play it against spells from the older lores?
I'm thinking, lore of darkness and Steal Soul. S2 hit, no save on unit, can be cast into close combat.
How about blade wind?
What about foot of gork and warpath?

Killjoy has it correct. The entry for magic resistance does not specify a spell type. So it should apply against any spell for which you may take a ward save.

Unless it says "no saves of any kind allowed", or something like that.

Which far too many of the dangerous spells say, hence why MR is largely worthless in this edition.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

Yes. But at least you get your MR when a non-targeting spell (like Purple Sun) wafts over you.
...then again, you don't get MR when someone casts a non-damaging spell at you.
...yeah, Magic Resistance is not very good. Unless it's on Flesh Hounds.

Nope, MR is a ward save and Purples sun disallows saves of any kind, not to mention it dosent cause wounds it directly removes models.

Well, yes. I was only referring to Purple Sun in that it can affect a unit, but it does not "target" the unit. Sorry, bad example.
I was just pointing out that MR in 7th would have been useless against a spell that doesn't target it, but now MR doesn't always work against spells that do anyway, so it's basically a wash in that aspect, and it's worse now in others.
Except, I guess, when daemons have MR1. In 7th, that was basically garbage, where it might actually be good now.
