My Bretonnian Amry Book says that when my knights are in the Lance Formation, any knight that can fight, but not actually in base contact with the enemy, cannot target specific enemy models to attack. With that in mind, can I assume that the book implies that models in base contact with the enemy unit can target specific models to attack, as long as the targeted model is in base contact with the model attacking it?

The only specific models you may target are Heroes / Lords and Champions. There are a couple of exceptions such as a mixed unit of Skinks / Kroxigors where you have forced a Kroxigor to the front of the unit. I think the Skaven also have some mixed units.

What this means for the Lance formation is that the 3 front models in your lance may target their attacks at a Champion / Lord / Hero if they so choose.

The other models in the Lance formation that are elligble to attack may do so, but you will only hit regular models in the unit, not a Champion / Lord / Hero.

So your assumption is right, but remember that you may only direct attacks at certain models, not just any model. You may not, for example, target a units Standard Bearer or Musician. You must also be in base to base contact, as you had suggested.

Only the front row can be targeted.

sorry, on top of that, you can only have the front row of your unit target. the rules are very clear about that.

Well that depends on what you mean by front row.

Really its your models may direct attacks at enemy characters / champions if they are in base to base contact. Thats the easiest way of thinking about it.
