@Casey - Yeah he's getting me to paint his HQ choices so he has some mint centre piece models, stay tuned for that.

@SlavetoDorkness - I made them to be full of pain

@Gits - perhaps I should try understated next

@Graven - I'm a personal fan of the red neon, but hey the client is always right, right?

Update: Next up some Mantis warrior goodness
Got some yellow on and put on a sepia wash

Then started to bring up the colour of the armour - god this will take a while.

You've got the idea right on the yellow Knightley. Just stick with it, it'll come together quickly now that you're this far.

@Camkierhi - Yeah figured there would be a ton of people doing the proper style and I wanted to stretch myself a bit

@Graven - you'd laugh, I used the airbrush and put in highlights and shadows on yellow, then the wash got rid of it all....

@Gits - sweet, great to hear I'm on the right track!

@Casey - Thanks man, heaps to go, yellow is a right PITA to paint.

Update: another layer of yellow done, at this rate it'll be 4-5 coats before its right

Those Tau fire warriors scheme look cool. Looking forward to seeing what HQ and centrepiece models you do up for your mate!

The Mantis Warrior is coming along nicely.

Forgive my ignorance, but what makes yellow a PITA to paint? Does it not layer nicely or something? Only experience I have is with my Tyranids Chitin plates, and I've got that working well.

It's very translucent, which makes it difficult to handle if you're used to working with rather opaque pigments. Once you get the hang of it though, it's really easy to work with. You just have to resign yourself to many thin coats rather than one or two thick ones.

@Mad. - He's given me a Fireblade and an Ethereal to paint, so they will get done next. Painting a good solid yellow can be done thorugh mutiple thin coats, that means you spend most of your time waiting for each layer to dry which is mind numbing.

@Gits - You're on to it, main reason lots of thin coats beats two thick, brush lines, brush lines everywhere!

Update: Wow 2 days gone and nothing really to show with it

I don't think I'd have the patience for yellow as smooth as that, or the patience to correct the many, many errors I'd make while doing the black bits.

Really looking forward to that Ethereal too, I can't remember you doing anything similar.

@Casey - Well, I'd tried my hand at yellow for a mate in NZ (he was doing lamentors) and I actually learn't the most painting that model, starting with don't paint yellow over a black base! and use more patience, so giving it another go means I can put it into practise Tau is a real unknown in my painting style, not sure how it will go, we'll see after this model eh?
Spoiler:

@Ayoku - Thanks man! I hope only 2 now but we'll have to see how it looks

Update: a 50/50 yellow and lighter yellow to the mix now

I think I remember that Lamentor actually. And you did that over a black base? Maniac.

This lad is coming up a treat, nice candy shell coat he's going to have. I'm still messing around with my Mantis, ran out of glue(how?!) which has been the main issue plus I'm trying not to finish him so I don't show myself up trying to paint yellow next to you.

Tau aside the Ethereal sculpts have more robes and skin than I can ever recall you painting. That'll be nice to see. You may as well spread your wings a bit with your capabilities.

You've got a great memory Casey, you must have been with this blog a long time then Regarding the yellow, the next step should make it easy to get some nice yellow on your marine if you so choose.

Update: Knightley posting on a weekend? What is this madness?? Well the Mrs took my little guy to his grandmothers so I've had some time to rock out with my... painting brush out.... dirty minded peeps.... So I sat down and was looking through mantis warriors for inspiration and then I decided I should reread Gits competition guide lines, pennance crusade you say? 100 years you say? so their armour wont be so pristine eh? well, time for me to spread my painting wings and throw some weathering into the mix!

Using the sponge technique after edge highlighting the model has left me suitably impressed, the big downside however. I should have painted the black camo onto him first. Bugger.

That is coming along really nicely... is that gunmetal colour you have used to do the weathering? Looks really effective to me! I might give it a crack next time my brother gets me to paint up some Chaos marines.

Nice work (as usual)

That's some pretty heavy weather! I like it, but I think it's a bit too shiny in places - maybe a subtle stippling of another, darker metal on the larger areas?

Weathering is coming along nicely. I´d agree with Graven, maybe a slight toning down of the bigger metallic patches - after the black cammo is added, to help pulling it all together - for a final touch up?

Expression on the face is spot on, will look great when done!

@Mad - Thanks dude, and yep, the old botlgun metal (new Leadbelcher IIRC) and using the corner of one of the old foam inserts apply some, wipe most of it away and dab onto the right areas, so easy!

@Graven - Thanks for some great feedback mate, I'll see if I can change those larger areas a bit, perhaps add some lighter touches?

@Littletower - Thank you very much for the comments, means a lot to me. The black will need an additional touch up after with some weatehring as well, so hopefully it will look good.

Update: Some more base colours laid down, the black will need an edge highlight then weathering the face etc you can see below.
Thanks again to those who have offered up their comments, being the second time I've weathered a model getting this feed back is great!

The weathering is very good, well it's OK I suppose. All together looking brilliant.

Haha, was that Lamentor a very long time ago then? I might not have been around at the time but if I post in someone's blog it means I've read it from the start at least once so if it's in here I've seen it.

Mantis is almost there I see and that weathering is hot stuff as well, do you still plan to do the aquila in black? I think that's the way I would go too.

@Camkierhi - Thanks man, I'm working on getting him done as soon as I can!

@Casey - Dedication to remember everything that's gone on in the blog or do you do what I do and just remember pictures and big events?

Update: More done to the mantis warrior, there is more I would have liked to do with the weathering but running out of time means corners will have to be cut.

Heck, you've captured a slightly disturbing veil of realism there. That face on that armour. What a job.

Also my memory is one of those conundrums that I don't think man will ever decode. Many things I can remember in exquisite detail, others I have forgotten completely. I don't remember what I had for lunch but I remember a number of flora I created for a game years ago and yet I can't remember the paint scheme I decided on for my new Morat army that just arrived. There is no pattern.

Cheers dude, I'm still umm'ing and aaar'ing over to do washes etc to futher weather it, at the moment I might not and just leave it with paint scratches.

Update: more done, mainly the face and the chapter icon on his shoulder. comments welcome by the way.

Freehand is awesome, I wouldn't have thought to do the tattoo but it's a great decision. I like the less stylized variation of the Chapter Icon too. Though, for some reason, you have attempted to choose the most indirect angles to show off your hard work.

I'd love to see him weathered even further but don't do it if you think it might be too overwhelming.

He's very cool. I'm slightly concerned you've gone too far the other way with the weathering on the black, but great regardless.
