Somewhere in the steamy jungles of the south...

Hey all,

Decided that I really need a game that I can play in under an hour, and that only needs 3-5 models for a good, flexible army. However, I am wondering if anyone has a copy of the Hordes MkII rulebook that PP released in PDF form during the past Summer? Really wanna play the game, but I would like to read the rules beforehand.

Also, would the Trollblood warpack be a good way to start into the Trollblood army? I would have to get new, updated cards for them, as I believe that the cards that come in the set are from the previous ruleset.

Thanks,

_Tim?

Quickstart rules are on the PP site. Along with the cards for all the starter boxes.

Using the PDF would be a bad idea, as things were changed, and a section was forgotten and added later.

The Warpack is good, and you can get the cards from the PP website Hordes Quickstart pdf.

The only problem with the TB starter is that it has 2 impalers and no Dire Troll.
Having Far Strike on 2 models is limited in use.

The quickstart rules can be found here:

Trolls are awesome. They wreck faces and don't die and I hate them so hard.

Thanks. I would have included links, but I can't even put the link for PP into the browser without the security here at work flagging it.

Just starting trollbloods myself! It seems to me that the 2 impalers in the box are redundant (depending on the type of army you want to field, of course) and that you could do better by swapping one of them out for something else.

In my area, a Slag Troll would not be a bad idea.

You could, but then you wouldn't be balanced against the other starter boxes.

Ah, I didn't mean for a dedicated starter boxes game, just for his army in general...

Although if you do end up getting it and wanting to part with an impaler, I'm looking for one, as I didn't get the starter box

There are lists (as said) where two impalers might not suck. I think they'd be better off putting a bouncer in the starter soon enough.

As to what's good, it really depends on what you want to run. Not counting teir lists, here's a brief rundown from my experience:

Axer: Useful in nearly every list, his rush animus and decent damage output makes him a fairly no-brainer choice.
Impaler: I usually include one, but he works especially well with ranged warlocks (Grim and I would assume Gunnbjorn) or if you plan on using the Thumper.
Bouncer: Handy for squishy warlocks, I have found his offensive output lacking but pDoomshaper loves him.
Dire Troll Mauler: Good go-to beatstick. Cheap enough and a good special rule. I usually run him with Kegslayer and Grissel as the main beatstick. Worth picking up.
Earthborn Dire Troll: I love this guy, but his abilities and points cost make him more useful for Grim Angus than any other caster. My favourite list uses the Grim/Earthborn tag team to pretty legendary effect.
Pyre Troll: Not too useful in my meta, but if you're facing lots of infantry he might be worth it.
(those are the ones I play with and own, won't comment on the ones I don't.)
I think if you buy the warpack, you should also invest in a heavy warbeast to go with it, so that's the Mauler, Blitzer, Earthborn, Mulg or Bomber. With two ranged beasts already, it may be tempting to go with the ranged warbeasts to make best use of their animi.

With any beast heavy list, whelps are worth the investment.

...Wow. Wasn't expecting that much help! Thanks! I am probably gonna heed you guys' advice, and pick up the Starter box and trade my extra Impaler with somebody.

One more question: do I need to buy updated MkII cards for the figures in the box?

I'm not sure which cards come in the set; I bought a blister that was old and had an MKI card, but others I've bought have come with MKII cards...

If you are interested in trading (I responded to your PM), I'll make sure to include the cards for the stuff in the starter box, just in case .

If you decide to hang onto the second impaler, I agree with Da Boss that it would work best with a shooty warlock. If you're using the starter box caster, definitely one Impaler is important (as he has a good ranged attack that the impaler can buff). I think your next purchases would be a unit of some kind (fennblades or champions would be my suggestion) and a heavy warbeast, as Da Boss said.

Also, the trollbloods section over on the PP forums is great for reading up on stuff! Here's a link to a good "starter" article on there. It begins with talking about the starter set, and goes into describing units that are good "toolbox" items to go with any list:
http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?29584-Trollblood-Toolbox-Where-to-Start.

Here also is a thread that links to all of the articles like that in the first post:
http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?28499-For-Kith-and-Kriel-Your-Guide-to-All-Things-Trollblood

And while I'm spamming you, I have a suggestion for your heavy warbeast, too. The standard Mauler is one of the cheapest ($$$-wise) warbeasts we have, and someone just suggested a super-easy conversion to make it into a bomber. Just put these barrels in his open hands: Barrels Link

I'm doing this, and I'm going to magnetize them so that I can use it as a bomber or a mauler. Two for the price of one... can't do any better than that!! A Bomber is a great complement to an Impaler, and the Mauler itself is very solid.
