Hello all, I'm trying to rebase my whole arm and I'm not sure if my search-fu is just failing me at the moment but I'm having an awful time finding any quick tutorials on converting slotta bases to regular. I know option 1 would be to fill it with green stuff but that seems like a waste of material / expensive when its 50+ bases.

I seem to recall seeing a suggestion where you place a piece of masking tape down and then prime and base over top of that. Seems like a decent enough of an idea, but I'm concerned that eventually the tape will lose its grip and the basing will start to come off.

Any past experiences or alternate suggestions would be much appreciated.

You can use modelling putty, which is cheaper and easier than green stuff, but if you're doing a bunch, you might be better off jut trying to track down non-slotta bases.

I've used the tape method, and it works really well. A more secure way would be to superglue a peice of card down, but the masking tape does fine.

Once you tape, glue gravel, prime, and then paint, you've got a pretty secure seal for a non-weight bearing joint.

I like the card idea.

When you used tape, did you cover the whole top surface of the base or just enough to cover the cut out?

The main reason I'm looking at using slottas is I have a couple of the gw base kits that comes with all the different sizes and for infantry bases they stick you with slottas.

Edit: The sprue idea is pretty clever I didn't think about that. It would still need some patchwork though with some modeling clay or the like though but a way smaller amount than filling in whole bases.

I've used masking tape in the past. I would usually cut it so that it's covering the slot but not the entire surface of the base. Since I use superglue to flock bases (and then prime everything) it's never been a problem.

Get you a garage sale sign and cut you some small pieces out and glue them on the base. Once you add on your grit, you can;t see the added pieces. Garage Sale signs are made like plasticard, but way cheaper.

that's a great idea. I was trying to think of a cheap source of thin plastic.

Heck my Wal-Mart probably thinks I throw my signs away after one use since I buy so many of them. I use them for everything that I would normally use sheets of plasticard for.

Those signs are like $2.50 and they have about the same amount of plasticard as one of those Galeforce 9 packs which are like $9.99.

For plastic tubes, check you local stores for reusable Straws. They are a lot more sturdier than normal disposable straws. I got a pack of 12 at my local Dollar Tree for $1.00. Been making assault cannons for my Apocalypse Super Heavy Ork Vehicles.

Thanks I think I'll try this for sure. I'd rest a lot easier having plastic superglued on versus tape by itself.

Trust me it isn't coming off. The only way I could separate the garage sale pieces from plastic minis, was to cut them off. The material glues to plastic better than plastic to plastic. I had some grots on top of a plasticard sponson and I had to tear the top part of the sponson off to remove the grot.

The masking tape is fine - only cut it to cover the slot. Once you've put undercoat, paint, glue, flock etc over it, then it's not going to be coming away from the base!

If you cover the WHOLE top with masking tape, though, then it's more likely to come off, as you could in theory pull the whole 'base' texture off at once.

Yes. So. Only do a stip of masking tape and it will be VERY secure...

No problem. I didn't learn that over night. I have been looking for alternative supplies for a few years now. I just found out about the reusable straws a few weeks ago. I am a cheapskate and that has led me to finding all kinds of stuff over the years. I bought some huge bags of stuff at my fishstore that make an excellent substitute for basing grit. I will get the name of that later.
