Hey guys,
So for the past few days I've been working on a building. This is my first time doing something like this and I would love some feedback. It's still a work in progress, but any advice/opinions/suggestions are welcomed.
Here are some photos: (You can check out the full album here: http://arcudi.imgur.com/warhammer_40k__dilapidated_building#XVifx)
Thanks for looking

Very nice.
How did you achieve the roughened exterior?
Could we get a better shot of the inside?

Thanks. I'll take some more photos tonight of the inside.
For the roughened texture, I used Pre-mixed Concrete Patch. It hardened pretty quickly and I was ready to primer the entire thing a few hours later.

I like it. A few questions, though:
How tough is the concrete patch? I've covered ruins in drywall filler before (same general idea) and given it a similar texture by stippling with a stiff brush. What I found worked nicely was to take a bit of relatively coarse sandpaper and give the dried surface a quick once over. It took down a lot of those little spikes and ridges from the application without totally killing the texture. In my opinion, it's a far more "realistic" look. It's still got variation and texture to represent wear and tear and keep the surface interesting, just without the (relative to scale) big projections that no real concrete structures seem to include.
Also, what's the scale of this thing? I see a little platform up the ladder, but I can't tell if it'd fit a a pair of snipers or a full tac squad, without some frame of reference.

The concrete patch can chip off, but it's also pliable when wet and I'm sure it can be sanded when dry.
I kind of like how it looks right now, but I will definitely try your method out on some bunkers I'm building. Do you have any photos of anything you've done using that method? I'd love to see them.
Also, if you look at the Album I posted, you can see in one of the photos there, a CSM squad within the building. I think about 2 snipers up on the platform is about right.

Looks pretty slick!
Is that a 1/4" base? The photo makes it look pretty substantial. I try to use MDF to make it as low-profile and unnoticable as possible (You will likely have problems balancing models on the edge with that kind of height difference).
Aesthetically I like the ramp. Game-play wise it looks like it's going to be an SOB to balance models on because it's so small and steep.
Otherwise I like it! Ruined buildings are something I keep meaning to do but that frankly intimidate me.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.
Observations on complex unit wound allocation: If you're feeling screwed, your opponent is probably doing it right. |

Yeah, it's 1/4" base out of birch plywood. I need to find some MDF for the next project. I just don't really know where to find it. I haven't seen it in hardware stores, but that may be because I haven't looked in the right places. I thought about the balancing issue after I had already done the sand and painting, but I'll definitely get the lower profile going next time. hah.
The ramp is something I didn't think about, gameplay-wise. I guess we'll just have to use a marker when playing.
Haha. I was actually intimidated with building anything at all! I've never taken on anything like this. My friend and I were planning on doing some cheapo thing and just using cardboard and painting it. We used foamcore instead and I took it home with me and just kept going. Hope I get some good ideas for next time. I already have some bunkers in the works. We'll see how those go.

Sadly, I don't have any pics. I'd snap one for you, but my terrain is packed away and my girlfriend has the camera, so I can't even do a demo patch. Oh well.
Derp. Glossed right over the link, so I didn't look at the full gallery. Now I've got you.

Just an update for those who care to see what it looks like now
I think there will still be a few things I add to it in the next few weeks (like more debris) , but I'm going to leave it alone for the time being. Thanks for all the input; I'll try out the ideas soon!
