I've seen numerous mentions about some alliance between Blood Angels and Necrons? What sort of nonsense is there and where does it come from?

In the new BA codex, one segment of the fluff depicts a battle against the Necrons during which the 'nids attack. The necrons and BA turn their attention to the 'nids, then both withdraw from each other after the 'nids are defeated.

It's a story that has led to pictures like this:

“Who is to judge what is right and what is wrong? Great and powerful foes surround us; unknown miscreants gnaw at us from within. We are threatened with total annihilation. In days such as these we can afford no luxury of morality.”

I should elaborate. It's dumb because it was NECRONS ... anyone else, I could possibly see it; they would stop fighting the Blood Angels to ensure their own survival in the face of the ravenous, insatiable hunger of the tyrannid swarm. But Necrons? There is no reason Necrons would not turn around to then take the souls of the Blood Angels as well unless, perhaps, the 'nids made them phase out but that's not what I'm hearing. And even then, the Necrons are fearless, soullness, basically indestructible robots (they don't actually die, they get teleported away, right?) so why would they stop fighting the BA just because some bugs showed up?

Agreed, certainly not the bright spot the newest installment of BA fluff. There's really no good explanation for why the necrons stop fighting. For the BA, the justification is based on their sense of honor, etc, not attacking someone immediately after bravely standing beside them against the swarm of bugs. I just don't get what the author was trying to show with the story.

My best guess is that he took a bet with someone that there was no way the editors would publish the new codex with a story about Necrons and BA fighting on the same side. That convoluted, loosely justified and completely ridiculous tale was his way of winning the bet.

Here's the infamous passage:

It's probably the most idiotic piece of fluff ever written, especially the thing with the Necrons having a sense of honor. And it's all thanks to Matt Ward I think. In any regard I simply pretend it doesn't exist, and I advise you all to do the same.

There are certain groups you don't forge alliances with. The Eldar, Tau, and even Dark Eldar I can all see under the right circumstances. Tyranids, Necrons, and Chaos are unacceptable. Orks really shouldn't be taking sides in the first place.

Alliances of convenience are nothing unusual in 40k fluff. REAL problem with this is the suggestion that Blood Angels felt some sort of sympathy towards the Necrons (it is really arguable whether Imperium views Necrons as 'lesser evil' than Tyranids, as opposed to Tau or Eldar which are obviously that).

If it had simply said that BA were so worn out after the battle that Dante saw no point trying to defeat Necrons too, so he withdrew - then there would have been no complaints.

I think what really bothers me about the story isn't the idea of them both turning to fight the Tyranids. After all, they didn't agree to not fight each other, they simply got distracted by a new threat. It's that after the 'nids are dealt with there's no reason they would go their separate ways. At most the BA might withdraw if they felt they couldn't win, but a space marine feeling bad about shooting Necrons? Ugh.

Necrons probebly to close to phasing out while Blood Angels are worn out. As it says, they can't guarantee victoy over each other. Now I read the fuff, it makes prefect sense.

How many times have the necrons stepped in to save SM ass since th 13th black crusade. The BA find fighting allies distasteful. The necrons couldn't beat the BA in a fight. Plus the necrons need humans for the red harvest. This is one bit of fluff I can let slide.

This is all thanks to Matt "Fanboi" Ward. In addition to the Blood Angel/ Necron alliance he's also brought us such gems as:
-A single squad of Ultramarines defeating a Warlord titan in battle.
-The revalation that all space marine chapters aspire to be Ultramarines, even though they can never be one.
-The revalation that all space marines consider Robutte Guilliman their spiritual liege, even the other first founding chapters who have their own primarchs.
-The revelation that Grey Knights are 100% pure and incoruptable.
-Grey Knights who slaughter innocent, loyal Sisters of Battle then bath in their blood to protect themselves from corruption.
-Purifiers, who are Grey Knigts that are even more pure and incorruptable than regular Grey Knights, who are 100% pure and incorruptable.
-A single Grey Knight who goes into the warp and single handedly destroys entire daemon worlds... while inside the warp.
-The same Grey Knight as above, who single handedly defeats Mortarian, the Daemon Primarch of the Death Guard, then carves his own name in Mortarian's chest.
-Grey Knights who wield daemon swords.
-Grey Knights who ally and fight along side daemonhosts.
And more fun to come since he's doing Codex: Necrons. They'll probably be able to take Blood Angels as allies.

This hasn't just been done by him.

-The revelation that all space marine chapters aspire to be Ultramarines, even though they can never be one.

Bwuh? Not even sure where you're getting this from.

-The revelation that all space marines consider Robutte Guilliman their spiritual liege, even the other first founding chapters who have their own primarchs.

I've never read anything that makes me even think of this statement. Many of the Ultramarine Successors do think of this as being true, so maybe that's where you're getting this crap from.
-The revelation that Grey Knights are 100% pure and incorruptible.

This isn't a "revelation". They've been like this since the very freaking introduction of the Grey Knights.

-Grey Knights who slaughter innocent, loyal Sisters of Battle then bath in their blood to protect themselves from corruption.

This one I can't really explain. But I've only perused the Codex, spending most of my time reading the fluff on the special characters that everyone's been whining about, and have no real plans to buy it.

-Purifiers, who are Grey Knights that are even more pure and incorruptible than regular Grey Knights, who are 100% pure and incorruptible.

-A single Grey Knight who goes into the warp and single handedly destroys entire daemon worlds... while inside the warp.

And that damage is repaired instantly. He can destroy anything he wants, it gets replaced instantly.

He's also not "destroying entire Daemon Worlds". He's destroying portions of them, such as Nurgle's Plague Gardens.

-The same Grey Knight as above, who single handedly defeats Mortarian, the Daemon Primarch of the Death Guard, then carves his own name in Mortarian's chest.

Mortarion is a putz. Typhon is on par with Mortarion, in terms of power, and Typhon gets put down quite regularly.
You're also forgetting the "daemon" part of "Daemon Primarch" and that Draigo did not "single-handedly defeat Mortarion". A squad of Grey Knights and a Grandmaster had been alongside him in this fight, with Draigo carving the name of the fallen Grandmaster in Mortarion's chest.

-Grey Knights who wield daemon swords.

You mean Crowe? He doesn't really "use" the Daemon Sword.
There's no Daemon enhancing his abilities in combat--in fact, it's the opposite with the Daemon trapped within granting those abilities to his enemies.
He's pretty much based upon Elric of Melnibone, wielding a Cursed Blade(hell, the sword's even depicted as black like Stormbringer was. Stormbringer also "called out" to enemies, beckoning them to kill the bearer and be wielded by whoever did it--since Elric effectively 'mastered' Stormbringer and became immune to its call) that fights him and strengthens his enemies.

-Grey Knights who ally and fight along side daemonhosts.

This one does irk me. But if the fluff is explained well, it's plausible. Like "The Grey Knights fight alongside Inquisitors using Daemonhosts, simply as a safeguard measure to ensure the Daemon is killed if it does break free).

And more fun to come since he's doing Codex: Necrons. They'll probably be able to take Blood Angels as allies.

Oh look. This again. How original...

I'm not normally one to do this, but I agree with Kan on all his responses.

Most of these threads seem to stem from people blowing things taken out of context from 2nd or 3rd hand sources(that only pass on PARTS of it to begin with) and out of proportion to the extreme. Yes there's some things that don't make sense in the book, but most of what is being complained about does in context to the fluff.

Has it been confirmed that Ward is doing the new Necron codex? Part of that makes me happy. While we will have gak for fluff, at least I know I can be stupid overpowered for a bit

Unfortunately knowing Wards way of just doing whatever without thought of the army he is designing, we will definitely lose WBB if he writes the book.

You're aware that this is far from the first time that the Necrons have completely and utterly ignored Imperial forces, right?

13th Black Crusade, Necrons actually showed up on Cadia in the midst of huge running battles within the Kasrs, and even stalled tides of Daemons threatening to overrun Cadian positions.

They didn't kill the Guard there, or attack the Imperial Navy in similar instances, etc.

They're trying to move Necrons away from being similar to undead/Daleks, with the whole "lawl, exterminates all lifes because we cannot haz!" and move them more towards being individualistic entities similar to golems or elementals.

With the new Fall of Damnos, it was pretty evident that they all hate life and want to kill everything off precisely because they do not has. Let's look at Flayed Lords for instance, perfect example of psychos who want skin again and rip it from the living in order to pretend a semblance of life. While it's true that the Lords get abit more individualism, the army as a whole is all about death to the living, Destroyers can represent this to.

the BAs and Crons are fighting.

Nids show up.

BAs and Crons withdraw from each other and begin to defend their respective footholds.

Nids are unable to defeat both and lose.

BAs leave, crons remain behind.

I'd understand this fluff if there was more elaboration on the Necron side, reasoning that perhaps withdrawing to husband resources would be a moderately palpable solution.

Regardless, it doesn't make sense unless there is further elaboration. Perhaps the Necrons truly have a limit to their abilities and the Blood Angels don't have a vendetta against the 'crons to pursue a full cleansing. Who is this Silent King anyway? Ask him why allying with the Tyranids is advancing the cause of the C'Tan. To my knowledge, the 'nids were avoiding the 'crons anyway.

Re: GKs using daemonhosts

This is perfectly fine fluffwise and predates matt ward, iirc the 3rd ed Daemonhunters codex explains the idea of Radical and Puritan inquisitors within the Ordo Malleus and that inquisitors basically have the final say in how they destroy daemons; the difference is that in that codex, a force with daemonhosts couldn't include Grey Knights. However, I don't know whether that rule carried over to the new codex. Anyone care to enlighten me?
