A small progress update! I got the trees and terrain + zombies and other goodies glued down to the board. The theme as I said is the nurgle sorcerer, painted up in Lords of Decay scheme, raising plague zombies to destroy the planet. It also gave the chance to use some zombie bits that I had laying around. Specifically the noose zombies to be hung from the trees, I am thinking of naming it "Traitors Ruin" after the fact that it is taking place in an abandoned execution field hence all of the hung people and zombies rising out of the mire. I know it is pretty bland in the beginning, but I am hoping that when I get the sand down on the base and it all primed it will look better.

So I actually got some paint down on the Nurgle sorcerer tonight, I am going with a Lords of Decay type scheme with nurgles rot coming out of his armor joints. I also decided to give him a nice leather cape, because sometimes even nurgle marines want to look cool. He should be done fairly soon, and I decided to downgrade the number of raven guard I am putting on the board to actually help tell the story instead of doing a hybrid diorama/army showcase. So I will be going with only 10 assault marines, 10 bolter scouts, and 2 LSS. Which will make my job a whole lot easier and take a lot of stress off of my hobby time.

Anyways here is the man himself, I have yet to think up a name for him or if I even will. But I feel like he should since he will be part of a diorama, any suggestions? I usually take names from myth and legend that fits the background of the chapter or regiment that I am painting up.

My completed nurgle sorcerer for my armies on parade board. Normally I go into a project knowing exactly what paints I am going to use and have the scheme all laid out. With this dude not so much, I had a general idea of what I wanted to do but beyond that? Not much. I went with a lords of decay type armor scheme with lots of oxidized brass, purples for nurgle and of course nurgles rot coming out of the armor joints and seeping out of the eye of the staff. This definitely not my best miniature but I am happy with it. Now I am onto finishing the rest of the board, and the Raven Guard that go with it.

Thanks para, those were actually the two I was most happy about. If I could do it again I would actually do some research on nurgle schemes before diving in head first.

So as some of you may or may not know my first army I ever collected/painted was a space marine Raven Guard army. As was the case with everyone my first army was painted terribly, so I decided to give it another go with the new space marine codex actually making the raven guard somewhat decent. I plan on painting all skin in the greyish pale tones of the raven guard with blackish hair, I also am painting the casings on the weapons in the same white stripe design as shown in IA 8. So without further ado here is the first WIP of the assault squad.

Thanks para! I hope to have them done by the end of the weekend. I picked up microsol microset for the transfers along with microflat and microgloss and the vallejo gloss. Hopefully I dont have a bad experience with them like I did with lacquers.

Well I did not finish the assault marines by the end of the weekend, but I am pretty close at this point. All that is left is the edge highlighting, doing some quick work on the jump packs, transfers, and finally the base work. I also got some more work in the AOP board, putting some cork down to represent some higher points in the marsh and got it all based with sand. For some reason it seems the glue was thicker in some points leading to a bit of a higher area, but not enough to get covered by the water when it is put down. I believe this will help give a sense of depth, so as Bob Ross said there are no mistakes, only happy accidents.

I think it is the nasty snarl he has on his face and not the pretentious look the other un helmeted dude has . But the straps are supposed to be the finest corinthian leather, they were spared no expense. But it looks more like leather in better pictures.

I got some more work in today, I got the edge highlighting done (bar some clean ups) and I have gotten the transfers done on two of the models. I gotta say they are a pain to work with, but look great in the end!

This brother survived the failed Raid on Kastorel-Novem, and has the campaign badge to prove his deeds.

Also RIP one can of primer, and I still need to use part of another to get some trees I missed and sand that has brown showing through

Ah, I immediately thought gold as my brain sees those bits as metallic, but yeah, I can see the leather effect now!

Transfers have worked a treat!

Yeah it does look goldish in the pictures, I know they are bad I will get them into the light box next time haha

Lord Corellia wrote:Are those the standard transfers? I can never get mine to look any good, what's your secret?

They are the, now OOP, forgeworld raven guard transfer sheet from IA 8. It was replaced by the nicer newer 30k sheet, sadly though it will lose a lot of the 40k squad markings etc. But on the flip side I got enough transfers on one sheet for almost an entire battle company!

Oh I also got the Sgt. basically put together so I had to snap a quick picture!

Looking good. You've probably covered this earlier in the blog, but where did those metal trees come from you're using on your Nurgle board?

They are the dead trees and I think oak trees from woodlan scenics. They run around 10 dollars per bag

Thanks Jan! I should be getting some paint down on the board this weekend, I got to decide if the models will sit on top of the realistic water or if I will make holes for them to sit in.

Thanks man! I am a bit angry at the decals at the top of the jump packs though as they are silvering in small parts that were glossed already.

Alright, so I got the assault squad done and I will get better pictures up sometime next week of them. Mainly because I entered them into a painting competition, tied for first place and got second place in a run off vote losing by two votes. It was a great competition but I did lead a bit to my own losing by giving my second place vote, worth one point, to the eventual winner . I don't mind outcomes like that because it will push me to do better in the next competition, especially since I've only been losing by a decreasing amount of votes each month. So here is to next month where I hopefully will take first place!

Also on some side news, I won the red scorpions librarian model in an ebay auction for fairly cheap. So you all will get to see a cool raven guard librarian in the coming weeks!

Oh yeah nothing to get angry at, but there was a 40 dollar pool for the winner so those who want to put in ten dollars to the pool and the winner gets it all. It would of been the perfect excuse to buy a trygon for the dakka october painting competition . But there were 9 entries so I am pretty ecstatic about getting 2nd place

I took the day off from painting on sunday and just primed a few things and got the black base coat down on the newest assault squad. But yesterday I started to feel a bit of pressure from the armies on parade due date so I kicked myself into high gear and got the bodies of the second assault squad almost finished baring edge highlighting and details. I plan on having these guys done before friday so I can finish the LSS crew then get to work on the the remaining models.

Which are one bolter scout squad, one LSS, possibly a librarian I am still deciding if he will fit the theme of the diorama and of course the board itself

Alright line highlighting done, arms and weapons attatched, and 1/3rd of the transfers are done, not a whole lot left. I gotta say this is really nice being able to get a squad done in a week instead of almost a month . I am super excited also because I found some great deals on ebay and they will be coming in in the next few days so expect some cool stuff!

I've just started using it to find bits and pieces and I have no idea why I didn't earlier. I have found a good many things this way.

As the title states, I am greenstuffing a jet of flame that will be coming out of a librarians hand using a tutorial I found on this site. So I was wondering if I did a good enough job? It was my first attempt at it, but I feel that it isnt too bad, maybe go back and try again with a larger amount of green stuff around the paperclip

Also today was a lazy day with hobbying, I only got the shoulder transfers down and matted. Though that takes a bit of time as these transfers are terrible to fit properly over a curved surface like a shoulder pad.

The flames look fine, only criticism I could have is that the 'strands' could do with a bit more direction to them, probably angling back towards the Librarian (that's a guess, I've never seen someone shoot a fireball from their hand in real life before....), but once painted I think it'll look great!

My technique for sculpting flame is to roll out a stretch of GS, then use my knife in a rapid up-and-down motion- this cuts in to create the depth, then the GS sticks slightly and thus pulls out with the knife to add height. No idea if that helps or not.

Oh I should of explained better. His palm will be open(ish) facing upwards and the jet of flame will be shooting straight up but not at a full force kinda like he is charging it up. But maybe I should make it a bit wavy and not straight up and down? But that technique you described is exactly what I did and it worked!
