Just had an idea, a new shop opened up in town latley that sells a range of crystals large an small with meny fantastic colours and it got me to thinking........ Why not instead of making and painting crystals/mineral rocks buy and use them for basing. There mostly inexpencive especially the smaller ones. has any one elce tried this or have any ideas to share? Would certaly look good with Necron's or any other theam if you find just the right piece.

I tried to use one of those "Grow your own crystals" science lab kits to grow crystals on a chaos sorcerer. I was expecting many tinny crystals covering the model. What I got was 1 giant crystal that enveloped 90% of the miniature.

Poor orks... Why can't they be the good guys for once?

There is a massive range of colours/sizes available an most starting at the 95p-small 25mm base size up to £5-size of yer fist, i think it prob a case of getting out there and just finding one thats ''just right'' just like an artist beach combing would. Plus as there natural they really do look stunning, i know i certaly could'nt paint anything that striking.

Sounds like a cool idea for unique basing.

As for the request to see pics of this chaos sorcerer entombed within crystal...

It was way back in 1994 when digital cameras didn't exist.

I really didn't like the effect it wasn't what I had been looking for at all. It produced a very quartz like crystal that was transparent only near the exterior of the crystal and went more white translucent towards the center\base. So it obscured most of the paint job I'd spent 8+hrs on. Lesson learned that day, don't use nicely painted models in an untested trial technique. I decided to free my trapped model using a hammer by crushing the crystal off. Using a few soft blows and the concrete garage floor. Well lets just say when you grow crystal on a model it IS NOT coming back off again without complete destruction. I wouldn't be against using it again but I wouldn't spend 8+hrs painting the model that's going to be encased in crystal. Bases would grow crystal nicely but it's completely random how it grows on the object in the solution. You could sit there and watch the crystal grow then pull the model at the right time but as I recall it was a 24hr dip.

Is there a way to manipulate the colour, say make it grow green or purple?

There is, it's in the chemicals used for the making of them.

Iodine salts tends to have purple crystals, Copper Sulphate blue, others give green, orange and so on. Many are toxic though.

If I wanted a custom colour crystal, I'd cast them myself in clear resin - tinted with a coloured ink. Unless you have a pressure vessel for it though, they come out looking pretty "natural" (cloudy, like those quartz spikes) - the pressure-pot helps with true clear casts ).

You CAN dye crystals though. It's used on a lot of cut crystal slices (Agate is often dyed different colours, to make it look like amethyst and so on. True amethyst is only purple under white light. It fluoresces ORANGE under ultraviolet (not dull orange, glowing orange). I'm not sure what procedure is used, but it should work on other crystal forms.

Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
