It's something they came up with after the Horus Heresy. With the potential for even Astartes to go rogue, it's an important countermeasure to put the largest weapons right behind the doors infantry get out of.
Failing that, I think the designers just didn't know where to put the extra guns

They have no problem when it comes placing all those skulls

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop

I've never been a fan of that approach, honestly. It feels... immersion breaking? I don't know the right term for it.

A suggestion, as I have the same problem as you. I try to base each of my units slightly different. The idea is to have each squad easily identifiable by their base, but the entire army looks cohesive.
Ex. Based squad one like they are on a torn-up road, squad two as if they are hiding in/behind a burned down building, squad three is running through a local park, and squad four is climbing over piles of rubble.
It makes the army look like the army is fighting its way through a tight urban was zone, yet you can identify each unit because of the slight differences.

Just a suggestion

Oh, I'm very much aware of Vic's amazing work! Her minis are the only third party ones that really capture the 40k aesthetic I feel. I think the wheels would be really cool, but the second I saw the Taurox for the first time I saw it as a snow expeditionary vehicle, like a Snowcat or what have you. If I was doing a more typical IG theme, I'd totally do wheels! I can't wait for her Valhallan stand-ins either, although they're a ways away a few bits are available.

Freytag93, that's not a bad idea! Just a little late since I've based probably close to 200 models for this army

ooh, so how do you plan to show that? maybe hack some bits off and give it extra-wide treads, like this?

or go for half-track, half-skis?

Well, it was more that I saw the kit and thought right away it would work fine in a snow environment, while it would be pretty silly as a speedy vehicle in most other environments. If I was doing another regiment I'd probably do half tracks instead.

So while I wait for the mounting lug for my Thunderbolt to and my last five Scions to get in, I've been filling a few gaps in my rank and file Valhallans. I dug up this autocannon squad and painted them up this weekend:

I finished painting my fourth and final Taurox Prime! These things were really fun to paint, and I was able to knock each one out in an afternoon. They're cute little chunky things and I'll miss painting them. This one in particular is the command Taurox, and that's why it's got the lion and golden doodads:

Each of the vehicles has a Scion knife and a number next to it, going from 01-03. The command squad, however, gets the skull and a 00 number:

And here's the whole motor pool, plus my incredibly messy painting table:

Those look awesome. Don't think it's a bad kit just dislike the gun mounted behind the side doors.
Also congrats on downing three blood thirsters

Thanks! It was a day of glory, that one. Bayonetting a Bloodthirster and Kharn to death in the same day is a Warhams career highlight for me

I also don't like the guns behind the doors; if I had it my way, they'd all just have the autocannon turret since I think it looks best. Alas, Taurox Primes have certain configurations they've gotta be in.

I just checked back and I've been working on this army for over three years now! Holy crap!

A while ago I was able to pick up one of the now-OOP Forgeworld heavy bolter emplacements. I always dug this model since it was the same one they used for the Space Marine heavy bolter turrets in Dawn of War, and I'm glad I can add it to my Valhallans:

The text reads something akin to "Go away"

I finally got to paint the army's centerpiece, a Shadowsword superheavy tank that I've named "Tsar" appropriately.

And for scale:

Various graffiti on it says “Crush”, “Pray to the Emperor”, “For the homeland!”, “Valhalla” and other such stuff.

Unfortunately I haven't put together any battle reports in quite some time, since they take about as long to make as the actual battles do to fight. I'm waiting on pictures from the games we played, which I'll definitely be posting up here though.

Wouldn't "Tsar" be more appropriate for vostroyans? Vostroyans have a Tsarist Russia/Cossack feel. WW2 Russians (red party) were kinda the opposite of Tsarist Russia.
