i enjoyed doing a little homage to the Terminator...

since i missed Throwback Thursday last week, and since Cassius' pics turned out horribly tonight, here is a little bit of studio work from back in the day...
when i started painting professionally, i got really lucky, and was given the chance to work for a few studios by a couple of my industry heroes...
one of those was Mike McVey, my first mini painting role model...
i was already a fan of the Warmachine minis, so to paint some for the studio was a huge honor...
after painting a few of the alt scheme battle-groups for the rule books, i did a bunch of the battle boxes in standard studio schemes...
finally, in 2005, i was let loose to choose my own scheme...
i really liked the illustration for Gorten's entry in Escalation, so went with that for my inspiration...
the shark's teeth on the Driller sold me...

i forgot to paint the Tyranid claw marks on Chaplain Cassius' right forearm, and shoulder pad...
i'm sure nobody would have noticed, but i couldn't leave any detail unpainted...
now he is really done, and packed up to go out with the other characters for this Ultramarines army...
i got some bigger pics this time around, too...

hey Dakka...

here are the four dudes, all lined up...
they are off to Canada now...



next up, i will get back to the Commander Dante step-by-step, paint up Warlord Queek for the Dakka Challenge, do a step-by-step for the Gabriel Seth mini that i am painting for the NOVA Open charity auction, and then do the Chaos Warband for a client's Black Crusade group...
after that, it is back to the Ultramarines, i believe, with some Devastators and Legion of the Damned, and then the Pan-O from Operation Icestorm, plus a Jotums, for Infinity...
busy schedule as always!!!

should be fun...

here is another set from 2005, done for Privateer Press...
i did one of each starter set for them, and this one was the biggest challenge...
so much off-white to paint...
trying to do as good a job as Ali McVey did on the original studio set was also intimidating...
rising to the challenge definitely took my painting to a new level with this set...

i am also working on converting up a female Heretek for a Black Crusade RPG warband for one of my clients...
i am stoked to get to use on of my favorite Infinity female sculpts for this wicked lady...



there will be a step-by-step for both Seth's burgandy armor, and the rest of the gold on Dante, too...
the Heretek, and the rest of the warband, will be an interesting chance to document, and share, how a commission progresses for a client, from first ideas, to sculpting and converting, on to developing paint schemes, and the finished product...

should be an interesting journey over the next few months...

after two weeks off from posting, to recharge my mental battery, i am back at it...
lots has been going on behind the scenes, setting up the next few jobs, and doing the step-by-step photos for Dante and Seth...
the step-by-step pics really slow down my painting process, since i don't usually paint in any organized manner, but flit from part to part as the fancy strikes...
hopefully you guys will find them helpful, which will make it all worthwhile...

since i am painting Gabriel Seth for the NOVA Open charity auction, i thought it would be cool to base him on one of the 2013 Limited Edition 40mm Objective Markers that Secret Weapon Miniatures did for the organization...
a quick email later, and Mr. Justin had a set in the mail for me, free of charge...



i chose the one in the top left, with the cool inscription in the stone, as it has the most angular piece, which will work great with Seth's pose...

Secret Weapon also has a set of bases, in a variety of sizes, that give 50% of the proceeds to NOVA's charities...
if you play Ultramarines, or Word Bearers and just want to deface them, the Omega base sets are perfect...

hey Dakka...

here are the first few stages of the Gabriel Seth oxblood color step-by-step...
sorry for the horrible pics...
i really need a new lens for my camera:(...

i started with a basecoat of P3 Sanguine Base (one of my favorite paints)...




next, i gave all of the details their basecoats, as i figured out where i would be deviating from the studio scheme...




then i gave the entire model a wash of P3 Sanguine Base, Coal Black, and Flesh Wash, in a 1-1-2 ratio...
i didn't thin this mix with water, since the Flesh Wash acted as the thinner for a wash, and i wanted to really stain the model dark at this stage...

Cool stuff! Will you be doing red NMM on the armour? Looking forward to the tutorial in that case, as coloured NMM is something I'm trying to learn at the moment.

@Paradigm: this guy is so busy, i have decided to keep the armor simple, but go for a nice glossy wet blood look at the end...
more on that tomorrow...

here are the next set of pics for Gabriel Seth's step-by-step...

after the heavy dark wash from stage three, i came back with pure P3 Sanguine Base, leaving the dark shadows from the wash under the curve of the torso, and inside the legs...




next came a mix of Sanguine Base and P3 Khador Red Base, at 3-1, in order to brighten up the color, but still keep a maroon tone, and achieve a nice amount of contrast...




i started my highlights with a mix of Sanguine Base, Khador Red Base, and P3 Underbelly Blue at 3-1-4...
this is just my previous color, with 4 drops of U.B. added...

whoops...
i missed posting yesterday, as i got sucked into painting, and forgot all about the real world...

here are the last two steps of Seth's armor...

the final highlight is a mix of Underbelly Blue and Khador Red Base, in a 10-1 ratio...
this is a bit bright, but will get toned down in the next step...




the last step is a heavy glaze of pure P3 Flesh Wash...
normally i would water this down, or mix in some Sanguine Base, but i wanted to take advantage of the glossy finish of this wash to give a wet oxblodd color...




that's it for the armor...
now on to the fine details, and the finish...

Interesting (and obviously well painted) as always.

cracking as ever Jah. You've a really nice touch of keeing the armour vibrant but not letting it look brand spanking new which makes the figures so much more real and actually look like they've worn and fought in it rather than just picked it up off the 'new and shinny shiny' rack. lovely stuff

Awesome, the face is so well framed on that model.
The wings and the gem at the back are particularly well done.
Clean lines on the cloak trim is no small matter either.
